Political Parties

Middle Barael has a parliamentary government with proportional representation. There are 120 seats in the parliament. The prime minister is chosen by the leadership of whichever party or coalition manages to control parliament. If there is no majority party/coalition, I.e. it is a plurality, then the King or Queen gets to choose the prime minister, but the prime minister must in these cases must give at least one of their cabinet positions to members of other parties. The King is like a president in many other parliamentary states. He handles the foreign policy and diplomacy areas, and it is his job to maintain relations with foreign entities. He also is the deciding vote whenever there are ties, or in the case of pluralities in the prime minister elections. The King is an elected position, but unlike the Parliament and prime minister, which have regular elections every 3 years, the King is king for 13 year terms. Prime Ministers can have up to 3 terms, a total of 9 years, while the King can only have 2 terms, a total of 26 years, though only one King has ever been in power for 26 years; he reigned from 1947 to 1973. The current Prime Minister is Marc Nuya a Liberal, while King Solomon is from the USD, the current Speaker of Parliament, Carrie Bat-Ijlana Çospeaos, is the only Pax Unio member in Parliament, while the largest and therefore controlling party in the Parliament is the Greens, led by Chloë Arborn. The Greens-USD-Liberal coalition was formed in 2007, and Pax Unio later joined in 2013. In 2014 in an upset the Conservatives gained power with support from the New Right, the Centrist Union, and the now-defunct Rationalist Party. However, in 2017, Martin Oromo and the Liberal Party won back power, and in 2020 Marc Nuya became Prime Minister after Oromo’s retirement. However, PM Marc Nuya resigned following a major scandal and the Occupy Forest protests, and in the ensuing snap elections, the left-wing parties saw major gains while more neoliberal or conservative parties lost many seats. As it stands currently, there are two coalitions of different parties within Middle Barael: the ruling “Alliance for Progress” coalition, made up of the Greens, the USD, the Liberal Party, and Pax Unio (with supply-and-confidence from the Democratic Socialist Party and the Friends of the UBI); and the opposition Conservative-Centrist Union coalition.

Parties represented in the Parliament

The Greens (Scanian: de Greyanx, Gaderite: he-Wéraaqin)
  • Party abbreviation: G

  • Party color: Green

  • Party symbol: Planet Earth with green flower petals

  • Party views: Environmentalism, pacifism, progressivism, alter-globalism

  • Party Alignment: Centre-Left to Left

  • Party strongholds: Cothon City, Northern Coast, Italian Community

  • Number of Seats: 44

  • Party leader: PM Chloë Arborn

The Greens are an environmentalist party. They believe in eco-friendliness, pacifism, education, grassroots democracy, social justice, and otherwise green politics. Economically, they range from Democratic Socialists to Social Liberals, with most Greens being economically close to social democracy. Their most important social issues are protecting the environment and the climate, pacifism, and democracy. They won big in the 2017, 2020, and 2021 elections in what is known as the Green Wave, and they currently are the largest party in Parliament. They currently have 44 seats in the parliament, but there are many more other representatives who also often vote for many of their bills, giving them a lot of control and sway over Parliament.

Union of Social Democrats (Scanian: Yunayun uv Suzayal Democrats, Gaderite: hel-Unéo de Soşéal-Demókerut)

  • Party abbreviation: USD

  • Party color: Dark blue

  • Party symbol: A blue rose

  • Party views: Social democracy, progressivism, environmentalism, pacifism

  • Party Alignment: Centre-Left to Left

  • Party strongholds: Scania, Northern Coast, Franco-German community, Catalan Community

  • Number of Seats: 31

  • Party leader: Nancy Lefebvre

Founded in the early 1960s, they gained a large following among young people in the 60s, and have been dominating politics ever since. The Social Democrats believe in social democracy, including universal single-payer healthcare (which they established back in 1969), and they support a market economy with stronger regulations so as to keep it from becoming harmful. They are also big proponents of welfare and social security, labour unions, income equality, and other left-wing views. Socially, they support LGBTQ rights, egalitarianism, feminism, the right to an abortion, the right to a full education, an end to racism and xenophobia, multilateralism and diplomacy, pacifism, and high political freedom and civil rights. Since the Occupy Forest protests, they have become more unapologetically left-wing and anti-corporation, although still being social democrats.

Conservative People’s Party (Scanian: Ghunserpativ Peyopelz Parda, Gaderite: he-Paredido Popular Cóneserebisto)

  • Party abbreviation: C

  • Party color: Red

  • Party symbol: Puma

  • Party views: Neo-Conservatism, Neo-Liberalism, National Conservatism

  • Party Alignment: Centre-Right to Right

  • Party strongholds: Southern Cothon, Southern Coast, Garydos

  • Number of Seats: 21

  • Party leader: Former PM Ronald DuPont Drumpfery

The CPP is a Conservative party, historically more moderate but lately there have been some more right-wing members. They want to roll back regulations on businesses. They also believe in an increase in military spending, as well as tax cuts and a smaller government. Socially, they support restrictions on abortions, and while in recent years they’ve been okay with LGB people, they are still generally against rights for Transgender and Non-Binary people. From 1960 until 1967, the Conservative James Mackarthay, infamous for his illiberal, demagogic, rule, held the Prime Ministership until a peaceful revolution in 1967 deposed him. From 2014 to 2017, their party leader, Ronald DuPont Drumpfery, was Prime Minister, but the at-the-time leader of the Liberals, Martin Oromo, won the 2017 election, and since then there has been a bit of a split between the more moderate members led by the MP Bill Frémont, and the more right-wing members led by Drumpfery. Following the party's disastrous results in the 2021 snap election, the CPP ended its coalition with the New Right and entered into a new coalition with the Centrist Union, with more moderate MP Bill Frémont as party leader.

Liberal Party (Scanian: Lifaral Parda, Gaderite: he-Paredido Liberal)

  • Party abbreviation: L

  • Party color: Light blue

  • Party symbols: Torch

  • Party views: Social Liberalism, Third Way, democracy, pacifism

  • Party Alignment: Centre to Centre-Left

  • Party strongholds: Central Barael, Israeli Community

  • Number of Seats: 6

  • Party leader: Marc Nuya

The Liberal Party is the main Social Liberal party in Middle Barael. They are usually considered Centre-left, and they will partner very often with the USD, the Greens, and the Centrists on legislation. Although originally they were against universal healthcare, in time they came to accept it. Socially, they believe in LGBTQ rights, the right to an abortion, fighting climate change, diplomacy, and other liberal views. However, economically they are much more pro-markets, and although they do criticize the rich when it is useful to them, they are by no means very left-wing economically. The modern Liberal Party is a descendant of the New Liberals party that was active during the 60s and 70s, but it reached its peak popularity during the 80s and 90s when they surged on their neoliberal platform and later in the 2010s when former PM Martin Oromo led a platform based around progressive stances on social issues. However, following the Occupy Forest protests and the scandal that brought down Liberal PM Marc Nuya, the Liberal Party was reduced to a mere six seats.

Pax Unio (Scanian: Yunayun fur Peyaj, Gaderite: hel-Unéo le-Shélaam)

  • Party abbreviation: UP

  • Party color: Pink

  • Party symbol: Dove

  • Party views: Pacifism, Diplomacy, Minority Rights, Foreign Aid, Pro-WA

  • Party Alignment: Centre-Left

  • Party strongholds: Cothon City, Northern Cothon, Central Barael

  • Number of Seats: 5

  • Party leader: Parliamentary Speaker Carrie Bat-Ijlana Çospeaos

Pax Unio is the smallest of the parties represented in Parliament at the moment. Their main issues are pacifism, non-violence, neutrality, and diplomacy, and they also are big supporters of minority rights, foreign aid, the WA, grassroots democracy, environmental sustainability, immigration, and openness to refugees. The name “Pax Unio” is Latin for “Union of Peace”, and although nobody really speaks Latin in Middle Barael, they still insist on keeping their name in Latin. Although many of the other parties are also pacifist and pro-diplomacy, none are nearly as much as Pax Unio. The party had been relatively small, although influential, for many years, though it grew to five seats in the 2021 snap elections.

Democratic Socialist Party of Middle Barael (Scanian: Democradagh Suzayalajd Parda, Gaderite: he-Paredido le-Soşéalismo Demókeraci)

  • Party abbreviation: DSP

  • Party color: Purple or burgundy

  • Party symbol: Raised fist

  • Party views: Democratic socialism, environmentalism, progressivism

  • Party alignment: Left-wing

  • Party strongholds: Cothon City, Northern Coast, Garydos

  • Number of Seats: 5

  • Party leader: Ariadne Marchand-Lambert

This smaller party was formed in 2021 when the four most left-wing members of the USD filed the paperwork to secede and form their own party, in response to the USD’s initial handling of the Occupy Forest protests. These four MPs disagreed with the government’s defense of PM Marc Nuya and had for a long time felt that some members of their party were too moderate, and so on June 26th, 2021, they finally seceded from the USD. The four MPs who formed the Democratic Socialist Party were all relatively young and very progressive, and so they were often jokingly called Middle Barael’s version of “the Squad”, comparing them to AOC and her allies in American politics. This party is also unique in that all its members belong to minority groups: they are all millennials, all from working class families, 3 of the 4 original members are women, and the other original member is a gay man. Since then, the party managed to gain an extra seat in the 2021 snap-election, following the wave of left-wing populism in the Occupy Forest protests.

Centrist Union (Scanian: Sendrajd Yunayun, Gaderite: hel-Unéo Cenederisto

  • Party abbreviation: CU

  • Party color: Yellow

  • Party symbol: Bird

  • Party views: Classical Liberalism, Neoliberalism, Pacifism

  • Party Alignment: Centre

  • Party strongholds: Central Barael, Arab Community

  • Number of Seats: 4

  • Party Leaders: Wilhelm Gallon and Winifred Henin-Gallon

The Centrist Union is a centrist, classical liberal party. They are pro-business but also generally social liberal, and they are also well known for their pacifism. Socially, they support LGBTQ rights and marriage, and they are for protecting the environment, but all in moderation. They often tend go with the flow in politics, and they don’t have too many official views, meaning the members are more free to have their own views that don’t match the party’s official views. They tend to vote with the Liberal party when it comes to political freedoms or certain civil rights issues, but with the Conservative party for the economy, and the Greens with the environment, but they are willing to compromise often, and they are well known for being the “Hufflepuffs” of Baraelan politics. Since the Occupy Forest protests, as many Baraelim lost their taste for neoliberalism, the Centrist Union was reduced to a mere 4 seats. Since then, they have joined an opposition coalition with the Conservative People's Party, following the CPP's more moderate liberal-conservative turn.

Independents United (Scanian: Intapentanj Yanidat), Gaderite: Inedépenedenut Unidut)

  • Party abbreviation: IU

  • Party color: Grey

  • Party symbol: A greyscale rainbow with a plus-sign

  • Party views: N/A (They are a Tactical Group)

  • Party Alignment: N/A

  • Party strongholds: Garydos and the Islands, Israeli Community

  • Number of Seats: 1

  • Party leader: N/A (Hāndoni Riki Rizhazan is their de facto leader, as he is the only Independent MP)

Due to the proportional representation system of Middle Barael, it is virtually impossible for independents to win unless they run with a party, as citizens vote for their favorite party, not the candidate, and then party members vote for which party politicians will get selected to fill the allotted seats. This party is therefore a Tactical Group, meaning it simply exists to help independents to run. If you dislike the other parties or if you are an big follower of an independent candidate, you join and vote for this party, and then in its internal elections, you vote for your candidate. This party has no official party views whatsoever except for political pluralism, the inclusion of independents in the political system, and easier ways for independents to run. Other than this, it is a blank canvas party, with its de facto views being the views of whichever the candidates’ views are, whilst having almost no official party views.

    New Right (Gaderite: Yémin Nobu)

  • Party abbreviation: NR

  • Party color: Black

  • Party symbol: Meander

  • Party views: Conservatism, Nationalism, Militarism, Anti-LGBTQ, Anti-Abortions

  • Party Alignment: Far-Right

  • Party strongholds: N/A

  • Number of Seats: 1
    * Party Leader: Clovis Alemand

The New Right is a far-right, often even alt-right party. They are militaristic, conservative, religious, and xenophobic. Socially, they are anti-LGBTQ in all ways, they are pro-life and anti-abortion, they are very pro-military and war-hawkish, they think climate change is a hoax, they hate immigration, they want to officially make Middle Barael a theocracy (though they haven’t actually decided which religion would reign supreme), and they are altogether incredibly right-wing and nationalistic. They represent only a very small contingent of Middle Barael, and so you’d think they would not be considered a major party, but they are incredibly vocal, and they have historically been able to count on getting a couple seats. Their longtime party leader, Felix Ivanhoe, was arrested in late 2020 for multiple charges of murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, treason, theft, black market trading, and fraud, all part of a massive international scheme with the government of Mowte to undermine the more liberal governments of Middle Barael, Freiden-und Freudenland, Turbeaux, and Love and Nature. Due to this, the party was reduced to a single seat in the 2021 snap-elections, held by the new party leader Clovis Alemand.

The Communist Parties United (Scanian: de Cummyanist Pardayes - Yanidat , Gaderite: he-Paredidin Communistin Unidin)

  • Party abbreviation: CPU

  • Party color: Dark red

  • Party symbol: Gear and Grain with a Red Star

  • Party views: Communism (assorted varieties)

  • Party Alignment: Far-Left

  • Party strongholds: Garydos and the Isles

  • Number of Seats: 1

  • Party leader: Marcus Lucano, Zan dal Zotto (Stalinist), Geoff Hesikihā (Reformist), Aikaterine Konstantinou (Marxist), and Tuğçe Yıldırım (Maoist)

Middle Barael’s communist parties are known for never having a shot at winning a seat anymore because they are so divided. Originally, there was just one Communist Party, and they actually won a few seats back in the day. However, over the years different factions broke off, such as the Trotskyists in the 1940s (though by the 1980s they had disbanded), the Maoists in the 1960s, the “Orthodox Marxists” (really Eurocommunists, Titoists, Luxemburgists, Left-Communists, and Autonomists) in the early 1970s, and the hardcore Anti-Gorbachev Communists in the late 1980s. Thus, there are now 4 main communist parties, all still very small: the Communist Party (Stalinist), the Communist Party (Reformist), the Communist Party (Maoist), and the Communist Party (Marxist). The constant division and factionalism of the Communist Party meant that it could rarely ever receive a seat, and they are largely regarded as a complete fringe party by most of Middle Barael. However, following the February 2021 Labour Rights protests, the left of Baraelan politics saw a small surge in support, leading the 4 communist parties to put away their differences and work together on a joint list in the hopes of somehow together gaining seats in Parliament. Now they are running together as The Communist Parties, with Marcus Lucano (who has been a member of all 4 parties at some point or another) at the top of their list, followed by the respective leaders of each of the four subsidiary parties. Under this new arrangement, they narrowly gained a seat in the 2021-snap elections, which saw increased support for the left-wing following the Occupy Forest protests.

Friends of the UBI (Scanian: Friyantsh uv de Yunaverjal Bajagh Inghom, Gaderite: Emicuin de-he-Unéberesal Basic Daḥel)

  • Party abbreviation: UBI

  • Party color: Cyan

  • Party symbol: Two hands exchanging a Shenar

  • Party views: Universal Basic Income, E-Democracy, Social Liberalism, Pirate Politics

  • Party Alignment: Centre-Left

  • Party strongholds: N/A

  • Number of Seats: 1

  • Party leader: Gavriel Ben-Artzi

This minor party has received a surprising amount of media coverage and newfound support following the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Friends of the UBI, like the name suggests, are in favor of creating a Universal Basic Income of §750 Shenars a month. This is their main issue, but most of their supporters also support the creation of a welfare state, direct or semi-direct democracy, and some more niche policies such as Cryptocurrency and being paid in stock. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government gave out a monthly stipend to households making under §150,000 Shenars, and the Friend’s of the UBI pounced on this opportunity, suggesting that a similar UBI system be out in place even after the pandemic. Because of this, as well as the loss in popularity for more neoliberal and conservative parties following Occupy Forest movement, the Friends of the UBI managed to gain a single seat in the 2021 snap-elections.

    Other Minor Parties:
    Libertarian Party
    The Rationalists
    The War-Hawks
    The Trumpian Business Party
The Spartacus League (Anarcho-Socialism, mainly AnCom and AnSynd)
    Eco-Falangism ForEver
    Cothon Coalition
