Politics of Meadowfields (Mostly Finished)

Politics of Meadowfields
From Phyrypedia, the free encyclopedia
Politics
Meadowfields is classified as a multi-party system, where no party ever has a chance of gaining power alone and must work together to form coalition governments. Meadowfields is a semi-presidential system, with both the president and prime minister having power. The president is elected via the two-round system, while the Senate and House of Assembly are elected via open party list proportional representation voting using the d'Hondt Method. 60% of the seats in each house are required to form a majority government. In 2022, the electoral threshold was abolished and the number of seats in the House of Assembly was increased from 227 to 300, causing a record number of 42 political parties entering the House of Assembly. There are currently four active coalitions in Meadowfields: Together for Meadowfields (bringing in the center-left/left-wing parties), Communist Movement (bringing in the four communist parties), We Can (bringing in the center/center-right/right-wing parties), and For the People! (bringing in the four far-right parties).

Elections

Main article: Elections of Meadowfields

Presidential and House of Assembly elections take place on a yearly basis, due to the ever-changing political landscape of Meadowfields. Every two years, referendums and Senate elections are also held along with the yearly elections. On the years when the referendums and Senate elections are not held, regional and municipal elections are also held. The Senate, House of Assembly, regional councils, and municipal councils use closed party-list proportional representation with the D'Hondt method in one single national constituency, while referendums are held using first-past-the-post. The president is elected using the two-round system, unless a candidate wins more than 50% of the vote. A coalition/party is also required to have 60% of the seats in at least one of the houses to get a majority, the same amount required for passing a bill. Both of the houses have equal power. If several parties form a coalition, the votes from all the parties are added up together and converted into seats. Then, those seats are distributed among the parties of the coalition. This process helps smaller political parties and promotes coalitions.
