The People's Republic of Markkar is a huge, orderly nation, notable for its museums and concert halls, anti-smoking policies, and irreverence towards religion. The hard-nosed, cynical population of 574 million Markkarians are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."

The enormous, corrupt, moralistic, socially-minded, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Administration, and Education. The average income tax rate is 88.0%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The Markkarian economy, worth 39.8 trillion Markkarettes a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. The industrial sector, which is quite specialized, is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, with major contributions from Book Publishing, Tourism, and Trout Farming. Average income is 69,386 Markkarettes, and distributed extremely evenly, with practically no difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Royalist is the most offensive slur in the Markkarian language, it is illegal to make racist remarks in public, Dogman-branded weapons are all the rage in the militaristic comic-book community, and every new building project has to undergo a five-year environmental impact study before it can go ahead. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Markkar's national animal is the Portuguese Man-of-War, which is also the nation's favorite main course.

Markkar is ranked 197,264th in the world and 1,493rd in 10000 Islands for Highest Crime Rates, with 1.75 Crimes Per Hour.
