"Whoever said nothing is impossible clearly never tried slamming a revolving door"
- Slothson Jangle, Reedarton, Maowi, July 2008

The tenth President of the Council of the Bouncy Slothland of Maowi, Slothson Jangle was elected to the most influential position in the Maowese Government in the February 2018 elections with an astounding 78.3% of the vote, for which 94% of the entire nation turned out. His most notable policies so far have been significant relaxations on immigration and citizenship laws, which have evidently gone down well with the public: his approval ratings remain high at around 80%. As a homosexual man himself, he is a passionate advocate of freedom of sexuality, and plans to propose a scheme to make it easier for homosexual partners to adopt children.

Early Life

Born in the remote valley village of Reedarton in Maowi, Slothson Jangle was the youngest of six children. Slothson's father was a farmer who had immigrated as a teen from Brancaland to Maowi and started his own successful farming business. Jangle's mother, descended from the indigenous natives of the island of Maowi, contributed to the family income catching trout in the local rivers, and so from an early age Slothson learned a deep appreciation of and connection with nature which noticeably affects his policies today. His primary education in the tiny local school was nurturing and accepting, and he often says that those were the happiest, most carefree days of his life. In 2000, aged 11, Slothson moved with his family to Maowi's capital city, Bradypus City, where he received an advanced secondary education. Living in the diverse, bustling capital was a huge contrast from the isolated community of his childhood, but Slothson took it in his stride with his characteristic gung-ho optimism, and it was then that his keen interest in politics began to be aroused. This coincided with his realisation of his gay sexuality, and he found himself a key campaigner in the civil rights movement. His passionate, mature speeches, even at the age of seventeen or eighteen, won high acclaim and converted the most ardent of his opponents. However, when it came time to apply for universities, Slothson realised that he was pining for the contact with nature which he had lost when he moved to the city, leading him to choose a degree in scuba-diving, while studying politics on the side.

Rise in Politics

In 2011, the then President of the Council of the Bouncy Slothland of Maowi, Washington Roanson, spotted the precocious 22-year-old Jangle, freshly emerged from his university studies, and offered him a free apprenticeship. Under Roanson's experienced, no-nonsense nurture, Jangle learned how to refine his speeches and convert his strong ideas into logical, convincing arguments. The result was a warm personal relationship in which both sides learned much from each other. Jangle met his husband-to-be, Tibe Dobble, in a law office during his time under Roanson and in the spring of 2013 took a brief break from politics in order to sort out his personal life, marrying Dobble and adopting two young orphaned children, Eleonora and Cedrik. Then, later that year, he re-emerged on the political scene as an even more mature, seasoned speaker and in February 2014 he was elected Senior Assistant for the Council, under his former mentor, Roansen, as President. In 2016, he was elected Junior Assistant and finally, in 2018, his presidential campaign gained an almost cult-like following, ensuring him a landslide victory and the position of President of the Council of the Bouncy Slothland of Maowi.

Leadership

Jangle marked the start of his two-year term as President by establishing a whole new Council procedure. Whereas previously, the representatives in the Council merely had the role of giving feedback and information to the President and their assistants, Jangle spread the power much more evenly across all members of the Council, giving them the right to propose, debate and vote on legislation, and removing the President's power to veto legislation. It is precisely this humility, honesty and earnestness which appealed Jangle to the public and secured him the position of President. However, Jangle's guidance and wisdom has still been strong enough to reshape the country through a fair democratic system, and his term so far as President has seen several civil rights of Maowese citizens set in stone. An ardent pacifist, however, there is one area on which Jangle has been uncompromising: gun control.

Policies

  • Public Protest
Jangle has codified the right of all the citizens of Maowi to protest in public. As a firm believer in freedom of speech, and also convinced that public protest is one of the best ways for a nation to progress politically, the Council under Jangle has ruled that all citizens may protest against the establishment in a physical space or online. Jangle has also overseen the creation of an online forum on which all citizens may debate and express approval or disapproval of legislation, and petition to have it overturned.

  • Euthanasia
Reasoning that banning citizens from willingly ending their own lives would restrict the civil freedoms of Maowese citizens, the Council under Jangle has ruled that all citizens of Maowi are legally entitled to end their lives, or seek assistance in ending their lives.

  • Gun Control
Jangle believes that firearms can only cause harm to Maowi's citizens. His resolute, persuasive speeches on the topic have firmly convinced both the people and the Council, so that it is illegal to manufacture, sell, buy, possess or use firearms of any sort.

  • Parental Leave
Taking care of a newborn child is a difficult time for parents which often places a sizeable financial burden on them, and being jobless with a newborn baby can be crippling. In order to help not just 'traditional', heterosexual couples, but parents of any gender or sexuality, Jangle has introduced legislation granting parents a total of ten months of joint parental leave, to be split up between them however they wish.

  • No Automobiles
An ardent environmentalist, Jangle has pushed for a law banning automobiles, which was narrowly passed in the Council. Climate change has been held responsible for recent extreme weather events across Maowi, and has prompted the Council to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Council intends to divert funding to public transport to make commute across Maowi convenient and cheap.

For & Against

  • For: Peace, civil freedom, social equality, euthanasia, the LGBTQ++ community, freedom of movement, gun control, capitalism, democracy

  • Against: Authoritarianism, racism, homophobia, sexism, communism

Personal Information

Jangle and his husband have decided to relocate the family to Jangle's childhood home in Reedarton, where he will spend his time when he is not working to ensure the peace, happiness and prosperity of Maowi.

Personal Trivia

  • Before he realised he was gay, Jangle had a girlfriend, whom he will not name, but who he has now realised attracted him because she really did look rather like a man

  • When he was at secondary school, his (affectionate) nickname was 'Slo' for Slothson, but also because he was the worst at P.E. of the lot
