The Black Wing Cavalry is an elite Lothish military order of monster hunters, demon slayers, exorcists, and royal bodyguards. Hand-picked by the King of the Loths and his inner circle, the Black Wing Cavalry is composed of only the most experienced Lothish knights and mages, and most of its current members gained experience fighting vampires and their ilk during the Bloodletting in the late 1190s. The Black Wing Cavalry is also predominantly made up of Marcher Lords, and officially keeps the Northern god of honour and warriors, the Putrescent Lord, as their patron. The primary aim of this order is to fight behind the lines - while King Morgan battles the Vampire Lords in the east, the Black Wing Cavalry has been instructed to root out vampires, succubi, and other demon-spawn hiding within Lothain, and safeguard its people while most of its fighting men clash with monsters in Oldcastershire. The order is sometimes referred to as the "Black Riders".

Over six years of fighting, the Black Wing Cavalry had truly begun to form as a unit distinct from the rest of the rebel host, responsible for the protection of rebel leaders and the execution of dangerous assignments. Though he was not the undisputed leader of the rebel movement, Morgan Gaunt (the more martially inclined of the Gaunt brothers and a skilled war leader) emerged as the de facto commander of these warriors, and they were thusly called "the Crows" after the sigil of House Gaunt. After the rebels captured Erren's Grave in 1198, Morgan was crowned Morgan II Gaunt, King of the Loths, but suspected many vampires had simply crawled back into hiding rather than fight. Thus, he formally established the Black Wing Cavalry as a military order and named Sir Lockett Moody as its first Lord Commander. As of 1203, the Black Wing Cavalry have uprooted at least 50 hidden vampires and other undesirables. Those they do not kill in battle are burned at the stake.

But the Black Wing Cavalry are not without controversy, nor are they universally loved as guardians of the peace. In 1203, Lord Commander Lockett Moody accused Lord Jon Mallory of being a vampire, and the Black Wing Cavalry seized his lands. After a short trial, in which the Baron, bound in magical chains, professed his innocence, he was burned at the stake, as was his family, while the Black Wing Cavalry claimed his vast fortune as their own. Since then, many more wealthy lords have been killed at the hands of the Cavalrymen despite there being little evidence pointing to them being vampires. Many, then, suspect that it is gold that motivates the order, and not a genuine desire to root out monsters. But Lord Commander Lockett Moody is almost untouchable. He has a powerful army at his command, and is a favourite of King Morgan II. In the south, it is said men fear the Black Wing Cavalry more than the monsters they hunt.

In terms of arms, moon-forged steel weapons are cherished by the Black Wing Cavalry. Such blades are particularly deadly to vampires and monsters, and thus particularly valuable to the order. But as moon-forged steel is rare and expensive, only the most high-born members of the order carry these weapons. For the most part, Black Wing Cavalrymen carry steel longswords and daggers. Though not as effective as moon-forged steel, it is common for these weapons to be incised with runes and infused with magic to better slay creatures of the night. A smaller unit within the Black Wing Cavalry, mainly composed of Ellan elves, are also famously skilled horse archers and lancers - arrows and lances are similarly engraved with runes to make them more effective against vampires, demons, and the like. As the name would suggest, the Black Wing Cavalry is an order of mounted warriors. Each member rides a midnight-black steed bred at Ravengard and trained by elven horsebreakers. These animals are famously fierce and fearless, even in the face of grave dangers, and are believed to have a magic bond with their riders. Cavalrymen have described experiencing deep melancholy after losing a horse in battle, and the mounts of deceased Cavalrymen seem to reject all new riders.

Mages also play an important role in the Black Wing Cavalry, as magic is particularly deadly to vampires and other monsters. Most magically inclined Cavalrymen specialise in holy and radiant schools, for these endow one with myriad offensive spells and abilities that can cause grievous harm to most monsters. Pyromancy is also a particularly valuable tool in the arsenal of a Cavalryman, and many vampires have fallen burned in holy fire since the inception of the order. But there are many mages in the Black Wing Cavalry that specialise in defensive spells rather than offensive ones. Shields of radiant energy can protect a squad of Cavalrymen from an advancing vampire horde, and healing spells are of the utmost importance in battle. A healer is thus an important part of any detachment of Cavalrymen, and their brothers will fight tooth and nail to ensure that they are protected.
