Title and Overview

The Noble Kingdom of Lexidus is a sovereign state in northwest Calveria Alternis traditionally said to have been founded in 673ACL, after the Formation Wars in which the city-state of Camelon, later the Kingdom of Camelon and finally the Alliance of Lexidus, conquered the other 9 city-states in the country to form a unified and noble Kingdom. Its territories expanded and shrank, but it came to occupy the entirety of the second most north continental arm of Calveria Alternis, sharing a land border to the east with the rest of the Gran Iljate of Quijain and a sea border to the west with the Republic of Titenfisca. It is bounded by the North Star Sea to the North, the Southus Sea to the south, and the Twin-City Strait to the West. After its formation, the kingdom has seen little to no conflict within itself nor with its neighbours, with its 20th monarch King Blair de Brus overseeing a country with 500 years of peace. Until now.

Racial Overview

Humans

Homo sapiens is the binomial nomenclature (also known as the scientific name) for the only extant human species. Homo is the human genus, which also includes Neanderthals and many other extinct species of hominin; H. sapiens is the only surviving species of the genus Homo. Modern humans are the subspecies Homo sapiens sapiens, which differentiates them from what has been argued to be their direct ancestor, Homo sapiens idaltu. The ingenuity and adaptability of Homo sapiens has led to it becoming one of the most influential species on Calveria Alternis. Humans in Lexidus in particular are defined by their pale complexions, dark and fair hair (dark haired Lexiduns being native to the south and the fair haired to the north), thick accents and tall stature, with the average Lexidun measuring at least 6ft.

———————————————————————

Culture

———————————————————————

The Noble Kingdom of Lexidus shares an overall cultural identity following 3 main principles: Self-Determination, Warmth in Cloth/Spirit and Drinking. Lexiduns from all major cities are fiercely independent in both soul and country, believing in their own abilities and a free Lexidus being the only Lexidus that can be. However one should not shirk his fellow countryman, should their status be poor, Lexiduns help one another out in camaraderie. As well, a common site in Lexidus is the warm clothing all citizens wear, tartan clothing with varying degrees of thickness of fur are a common site both north and south. Finally, the drinking culture in Lexidus is enormous, Lexidus is the top importer of alcohol in all of Calveria Alternis. With their alcohol exports also being so substantial that the Lexidus Merchants Guild was founded upon it and was significantly wealthy even before the discovery of the various valuable minerals and ores in the undercities.

When visiting Lexidus however, one must be mindful of the strong separate cultures associated to each city and their regions. With the 10 cities being formerly separate city-states ruled by warlords, clans and chiefs. The exception being Nola which was a settlement given city-status in 1124ACL, its culture being one of the fastest growing and most fledgling.

.

Abel:

One of the North Star Sea Cities; despite being being located closer inland and surrounded by rivers. Abel is the primary centre for foreign mainland trading for all of Lexidus, a border city with Quijain, they have surprisingly never been raided by their neighbours and actually harbour a respect for one another; including coexistence. Quijain and now Rohzai, bring their goods through the city, where a branch of the Merchant Association of Lexidus is located.

Bluxa:

Bluxa is referred to as the "Heart of Lexidus" due to its placement between 4 major cities and their main roads, leading north, east, south and west. Despite this however the city has a less than favourable reputation due its issues with crime and poverty. Its people however have a unique spirit of being rough, yet honest and open. The Thieves Guild is "allegedly" based here.

Camelon:

The capitol of Lexidus and the city that conquered all else. Camelon is the heartland of Lexidus and the reason why the country is referred to as noble. Nobles make their homes here and the nation-wide identity of being Noble: Courageous, Honourable and Moral, originates from here and its citizens reflect that. The Lexidus lineage began in the city and with its close relationship with the city-states of Loness, Oot and Abel, allowed them to conquer the rest of the country.

Deen:

The city that sparked a fire that would engulf all of Lexidus, their invasion with their ally of Redan on the city-state of Camelon, instigated events that would lead to the formation of the Noble Kingdom over half a millennium later. Despite this, the people of Deen are friendly and charismatic people, with many a merchant originating from here. The Merchant Association of Lexidus are based here.

Harbourton:

The metropolitan city of Lexidus. Despite its dark past of being the capitol of the infamous Black Hand Clans, the city is the most bustling and diverse city in the country. Being home to Human, Kobolds, Squidspawn, Gemstalts and even Grenouille. Its people are kind and approachable, with Titenfiscan culture being highly prominent, even mixing with Lexidun culture to form a unique kind of society. It is seen as the gateway to and from the Republic of Titenfisca.

Loness:

One of the North Star Sea Cities, Loness is home to the best tasting food in all of Lexidus. The Culinary School for Artful Taste are based here, as well as country famous bakeries such as Mama Hovis' Baked Goods. The finest chefs and cooks come from this city, its people jolly, well-fed and rosy cheeked. Loness Honey Duck is a legendary and popular dish that originates from here.

Nola:

The youngest city in Lexidus, Yola is named after its Chief's clan, of whom was a famous pirate hunter who originally hailed from Oot; Chief Burke Nola. The flag represents all of the North Star Cities and their influence in making Nola happen. The city is quickly expanding and is set to become a major shipping hub between Lexidus and its Northern Neighbours.

Oot:

One of the oldest North Star Sea Cities, Oot and the Ooter Isles are seen as the most ancient and culturally significant site in all of Lexidus, some claiming it to be the cradle of human civilisation in Lexidus. One of the first ever city states to form before the Formation War, Oot and its people have been close to Camelon, a culture of friendship and cooperation being present even to this day.

Pontath:

One part of the Southus Port Cities, Pontath is home to long and pristine beaches. It is the warmest city in Lexidus all year round, with some of her people being very tanned for northerners. The city was afflicted by piracy from the Southus Sea for quite some time, however following the curbing of piracy in the region, the city is quickly becoming a vibrant trade port that soon will rival the North Star Cities in terms of trade.

Redan:

Allies of Deen during the Formation Wars, Redanians were some of the first people to capitulate to Camelon. As a result, Redan's culture is very similar to that of Camelon, with nobility and rich merchants dominating the city's population. A prime holiday destination and retirement spot for plenty of peasantry and soldiers as well, the city has flourished in recent years due to the curbing of piracy in the Southus Sea. It is the other half of the Southus Port Cities.

Selkirk:

The birth-place of the De Brus lineage, people from Selkirk have always been fighters. Their yearlong defence of their city from the onslaught of the Kingdom of Camelon, inspired fierce respect even after their defeat and their tactics became the standard for the country of Lexidus. The majority of soldiers in the Standing Army of Lexidus are from Selkirk and its people reflect this. Hardy and competitive, they house the finest soldiers and commanders in all of Lexidus.

Kobolds

Kobolds are short, reptilian humanoids and the secondary race of Lexidus. A kobold’s scaly skin ranges from dark rusty brown to a rusty black color. It has glowing red eyes. Its tail is non-prehensile. Kobolds wear various states of clothing, ranging from rags to monk robes to elegant noble-wear, favouring colours associated to their clan. A kobold is 4 to 4-1/2 feet tall and weighs 55 to 65 pounds. Kobolds speak Common like the rest of the land, with different clans having different accents, with voices that are higher pitched than most humans.

———————————————————————

Culture

———————————————————————

There are 4 clans to which all kobolds in Lexidus belong to, each with their own unique culture and lifestyle.

Clan Drakon:

Considered to be one of the least approachable and almost hostile kobold clan in all of Lexidus, the Drakon are barbarians, refusing to integrate with or even approach Lexidun society. They are primitive and violent, petty thieves at best and violent raiders at worst, they are kept in line by Clan Helvez, who they have a long standing feud with.

Clan Helvez:

Nomadic in nature, the kobolds of Helvez are hunters and keep to themselves, only interacting with Lexidus for trade and occasional mercenary work. Recent years however have thawed their hearts and enticed them into potential integration with Lexidun society. However, their constant feud with Drakon keeps them on edge and needing to counter their barbaric brethren.

Clan Maither:

The first ever clan to mingle and even integrate with Lexiduns, Kobolds belonging to Clan Maither hold a devout belief in the national patron of Myratnis, offering their services to the mages of Myratnis and many independent churches and even charities. They renounce violence and are pious pacifists, wishing to spread the kind and healing touch of Myratnis across Lexidus, to humans, squidspawn and kobold.

Clan Xarbus:

One of the largest and most "civilised" clans, the Xarbus Kobolds are the driving force behind fairer Kobold representation in Lexidus. Honouring their past but embracing modern cultures and the Lexidun way of life, these kobolds actively mingle in all classes of society, with many of them being astute merchants, negotiators and some even being part of the aristocracy.

The Government

Three brothers sat on three thrones. The eldest sat on a throne of silver, the middle sat on a throne of ivory and the youngest a throne of pale birch.
The eldest was bold but brash, the middle clever but conniving and the youngest unremarkable in attribute apart from his quiet demeanour.
Once their father died, it was certain the eldest would become chieftain, the middle child however despised his brothers and wanted the title all for himself.
He proposed a test of courage, those who could approach a chained lion and get as close as possible without being maimed should be chieftain.
The eldest in his brash ways, accepted the challenge, the youngest simply nodded.

The three were locked in a stable with the beast, an albino lion. The creature had been starved for days, it's pale eyes afire with pure fury.
The eldest went first, placing himself a foot's pace away from the beast, taunting it by leaning forward and back and laughing.
However brave and strong the eldest brother was, he was not dexterous and tripped forward into the foaming jaws of the beast. He was rendered asunder.
Laughing, the middle brother grabbed a torch and approached the beast, scaring it away into a corner.
There he approached with little danger as the animal pulled at it's chains to escape the wrath of the flames.
As the middle bother gloated, the lion broke it's chains in it's hysteria, the middle brother was startled and dropped his torch. The lion rendered him asunder.
All who remained was the youngest, who it seems was at the lion's mercy, people outside the stable tried in vain to open the locked door.

As they attempted to ram open the door, a mighty roar was heard, a roar so loud it was heard across all of the land.
Fearing the worst, the people finally forced the door open.
The youngest was alive, not only that he was face to face with the pale beast, their eyes locked in a battle for supremacy.
Another mighty roar echoed out from the stables but the people saw that it was not the lion's roar but rather the young brother's.
The lion bowed its head to the youngest in sign of submission and loyalty. The youngest walked out of the stable, the pale lion at his side.
There, among his people, he spoke with a mighty voice that could be heard for miles.
"I am Lexidus! I am your King! Hear me roar!"

The House of De Brus pride themselves on being the descendants of Lexidus, the founder of the city state of Camelon, to which the eventual country was named after him. Their lineage has endured for little over 11 centuries. However, the title of De Brus was only adopted 500 years ago after the Reformation Wars. Where King Brus united Lexidus into the country it is today, all following kings took his name in honour of his achievement. Only Lexidus and Brus' statues stand next to one another in equal height at the centre of Camelon.

Religion

Myratnis, or the Holy Mother as her followers often refer to her, is the Goddess of life and water. She is the most loving of the pantheon and the main advocate for peace. Her followers are characterised for their chivalry and their honour.

Although she has a love for peace and tolerance, Myratnis recognises warfare as being an integral human affair and does not punish her followers for taking part in it. Thus, whilst Myratnis’ followers may advocate peace, they fight with honour on the battlefield. Myratnis aids this in a way by bestowing upon her magically-inclined followers healing powers. Healers are a main feature of those who follow Myratnis and she allows for her followers to be brought back from the brink. In addition, wizards with the patronage of the Holy Mother are also granted the power to manipulate and create water allowing them to both bring life to lands and to use water to vanquish those who would seek to hurt them.

The lands of Kingdoms and nations who have Myratnis as their patron tend to be plentiful and full of life. Myratnis takes care to protect those who worship her and seeks to allow them to live a long and plentiful life before losing them to Decidius.

Myratnis is well-liked by the other Gods, even Rigma whose fire is extinguished by the Holy Mother’s life-bringing water. However, Myratnis is locked in an eternal conflict with Decidius who curses Myratnis’ children with mortality forever claiming their souls and keeping them in his Necrominus.

In Lexidus, Myratnis is affectionately referred to as "Maither Kin'est" (mother kindest) and all of her subjects refer to themselves as being her "Bairns" (children).

The Capitol

The capital city of the Kingdom of Lexidus was originally a small city-state ruled by the Lexidus clan. Following the Formation war, the descendants of Lexidus, the De Brus clan won and conquered the other clans and city-states across the country with Camelon being named the capital city of this new kingdom. 500 years after the war, Camelon has become the gem of the crown that is Lexidus. Originally just consisting of the original half containing the Camelon castle and some villager huts, the city expanded due to its rapidly increasing population and increased wealth from its abundant resources from the undercities. The new half was created and became the largest part of the city, becoming the home of the majority of the population. Whilst the old half's living quarters were demolished to make way for a grand temple dedicated to Myratnis and noble/merchant quarters. The city is the centre of trade within the kingdom, with the grand river running adjacent to the it all the way to the coast as well as having merchant-friendly roads leading to other cities throughout the kingdom.

———————————————————————

Geography and Ecology

———————————————————————

Layout

Being a massive city developed around a small and older one, there is a juxtaposition between the two halves. The old half is characterised by winding roads, poor city planning and old stone constructions, whilst the new half features open roads, newer sandstone constructions and crowds of people. The old half is where the nobles, rich merchants and royal family preside with the royals living in Camelon castle and the nobles/rich merchants living in the newly constructed living quarters within the old half. Peasantry, standard merchants, soldiers and other people live exclusively within the new half. There are 5 entrance and exit points throughout the city, 2 giant entrance in the new half (leading from the new half out into farm land), 2 smaller entrances in the old half (one leading to and from the new half and one leading out to surrounding farmland) and a single water entrance way between the two allowing for boats to come and go with various trade goods and/or supplies.
Defence

A sizeable wall runs its way around the entirety of the city, with the old half's wall being the largest and most fortified with frequent patrols and guard towers. The new half's wall is not as sizeable but still contains a strong guard garrison adorned along it's vast length. Barbicans loom over the 5 entrance ways into the city, complete with murder-holes (Meurtrières), machicolations for dumping tar and pitch and each entrance way (bar the waterway which just has a gate) featuring a drawbridge with a hefty iron gate. The wall lining the old half features concentric construction with multiple walls shielding Camelon castle. As well, various Falconet Light Cannons and Grapeshot Heavy Cannon are placed across the wall at regular intervals.

Notable Details

Camelon Castle: The centrepiece of the old half and home to the royal family, including King Blair de Brus himself. It is the single-most fortified castle in all of Lexidus. The King's family have lineage have lived within it's walls for centuries, standing as a testament to the strength of the de Brus family.

Myratnis' Holy Temple: Residing within the old half, this newly constructed monolith is made from gleaming sandstone is a modern marvel of the city. The largest of it's kind in all of Lexidus, the temple was commissioned 100 years ago and made in honour of the goddess Myratnis and the life she has given to Lexidus and allowed Camelon to flourish. People from around the country make pilgrimages just to step within it's beautiful marble infused halls, with grand stain glass illustrations of Myratnis' wonder.

Grand Undercity Portcullis: Heavily guarded in the centre of the new half is the entrance to the largest Undercity, below are countless workers working constantly on mining the quarry below, providing materials and minerals for the city above. The safest of the undercity passages are based here due to the sheer amount of people working.

Royal Material Reserve: A prominent site within the new half, this is where the countries materials and minerals end up to be traded and/or allocated across the country and world. It sits next to the Great Camelon Market where the majority of trading in the city takes place.

Lexidus Defence Factories: Another significant sight in the new half, this is where the majority of weapons and equipment for the Standing Army are created and based, as well as defence and siege equipment.

Civilization's Unique Trait

Beneath all major cities in Lexidus lurk enormous interconnected chasms with the ruins of ancient city states within them. These undercities connect to one another, running deep under the kingdom, some tunnels connecting the cities are narrow and claustrophobic barely able to have two people standing abreast with one another. Other tunnels however, are vast and even have running rivers through them, spreading Myratnis' glory and life giving water throughout.

These Undercities allow Lexiduns access to various materials and minerals useful in mainly in construction, making the country rich in resources. Including vast ore veins with valuable metals, ripe for exporting to potential trade partners. As well, the tunnels allow traversal between the cities around Lexidus be it through specialised horses through large tunnels or on a boat in one of the many underrivers.

However, Traversing between the Undercities is a costly and dangerous affair. One needs a large quantity of lantern oil to even see, an up to date map to traverse the labyrinth of offshoot tunnels and either an underriver rowboat or a specialised "underhorse" that doesn't get spooked by the darkness and most of all, the monsters. The undercity is home to many unknown and terrifying beasts, few have survived enough encounters to accurately describe what lurks in these chasms. Some claim to have seen black wolves the size of bears, insectoids with venom potent enough to kill an entire hamlet and even monstrous human-like mutants who's wail would drive the most stalwart man into a blubbering mess.

Military

The Standing Army of Lexidus

After the formation of country, there was briefly no standing army in the The Noble Kingdom of Lexidus. In the Formation War, Lexidus was characterised by the use of small war-bands of household troops often engaging in raids and low level warfare. By the end of the formation, the kings of Lexidus could command forces of tens of thousands of men for short periods as part of the "common army", mainly of poorly armoured spear and bowmen. After the war of formation, Lexidus and it's kings reigned supreme and sought immediately to form a permanent force. Formed 500 years ago shortly after the kingdom itself, the army is unparalleled in its defensive and anti-siege capabilities but is going under slight reformation to improve it's ferocious but haphazard offensive capabilities. They are based in Camelon. (50,000 total)

Free Squidspawn Company

In honour of the ultimate sacrifice made by a squidspawn mercenary company led by Commander Sieglun during the Battle to End all Battles in 673ACL, a permanent auxiliary force was created in 674ACL and named after those who fought and died alongside The Alliance of Lexidus to rid the land of the Blackhand Clans and unite the country under one banner. The Free Squidspawn Company employs Squidspawn who make their residency in the Noble Kingdom of Lexidus and even those who choose to become citizens. Included in the Company are largely Squidspawn but also Kobolds from both Titenfisca and Lexidus. They are based in Harbourton. (1000 total)

Royal Lexidun Navy

Formed in 226ACL by Queen Yola I, unlike its army counterpart, the RLN has been an organised and prominent fighting force in all of the country of Lexidus' interpretations. Allowing for a protected port and interaction with city-states such as Oot, Loness and Abel, trade flourished between the cities. Cooperation with the North Star Sea Cities and the the Kingdom of Camelon allowed a strong relationship to develop between the city-states at the time, swearing their loyalty to Camelon and allowing for the eventual formation of the Noble Kingdom of Lexidus. With their forces combined, the RLN ruled not only the North Star Sea but also the Southus sea and attained a reputation as being fierce and unrelenting. Despite the over 5 centuries of peace, the Royal Navy still routinely exercises its control over the North Star and Southus Seas, still being recognised as one of the most efficient navies in all of Calveria Alternis. They are based in Loness.
