The Free State of Kurenia is a massive, environmentally stunning nation, ruled by Freyda Kascar with a fair hand, and remarkable for its ban on automobiles, complete lack of prisons, and sprawling nuclear power plants. The compassionate, democratic population of 1.008 billion Kurenians love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

The government — a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, socially-minded, outspoken morass — juggles the competing demands of Education, Healthcare, and Administration. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Machlaka. The average income tax rate is 77.4%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The sizeable but sluggish Kurenian economy, worth 28.2 trillion roes a year, is highly specialized and mostly made up of the Information Technology industry, with significant contributions from Beef-Based Agriculture. State-owned companies are reasonably common. Average income is 27,956 roes, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.5 times as much as the poorest.

Social media sites prompt users to send birthday greetings to unresponsive nonagenarians, the government has an entire department dedicated to staring at microscopes and writing down letters, the nation locks people up and tells them they're mad for compassion's sake, and military strategists are questioning the wisdom of subsidizing the economies of sworn enemies. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Kurenia's national animal is the herring, which is also the nation's favorite main course.

Kurenia is ranked 12,743rd in the world and 204th in The Communist Bloc for Longest Average Lifespans, with 82.3 Years.
