Duotona in the Olympic Games

Duotona in the Olympic Games

Note: This refers to Duotona's involvement in the Olympics within it's own universe, and does not refer to any roleplay sports events which have taken place on the sports forum.

Duotona first assembled a team for the Olympics in time for the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. They would compete in all Olympic games following this point excluding the 1972 Summer and Winter Olympics in Sapporo and Munich respectively due to the country still adjusting and recovering from it's military takeover two years prior (athletes from the nation still competed as independent athletes under the Olympic banner). The Duotonan team were able to compete in Turin in 2006, as the GTO's deposition of the military dictatorship was notoriously peaceful and Duotona received enough aid following the invasion that the sports facilities they used for training were able to be restored. Under military rule, Duotona notoriously competed in both the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, choosing to support neither NATO's or the Warsaw Pact's boycott of their rival's Olympiad.

Duotona earned less medals between 1964 up to 2006, as their team was either inexperienced or were, in the case of their military rule, under immense pressure from their nation to succeed or face disciplinary action. The team has seen steady growth since Turin 2006, especially in summer games. In particular, the current Duotonan team has been well known for it's cycling and bobsled teams, who have been able to challenge some of its larger opponents and cause upsets to earn medals. Duotona also decided to attempt to bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics, which was planned to be held in the nation's snowy mountain city of Narevila in the Muont region. Their bid came second to eventful winners Italy.

The team has been vocally supported by the Duotonan government post-2005, as current head of state Oscar Simpson stated before the 2012 London Olympics, "Sport is a medium in which people aren't judged by their race, religion or any other part of their appearance, but are instead judged by their talent. There is no greater feeling than being able to represent your home doing what you love." Duotonan athlete Maxwell Malek, who won 5 gold medals in cycling in the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Olympics, was awarded the Duotonan Medal of Excellency (DME) for his achievements in cycling in 2021.
