The City of Alexandria serves as the capital of the Aletian Empire. Located on the north-eastern part of the Laurentian West Continent, Alexandria is a vast city of over two hundred million people, which stretches over hundreds of kilometres. The city is divided into multiple districts. The inner most district is the Palace District, which is located in the city centre. The Palace District corresponds to the heart of the original city, and consists of a series of settlements on the Palatine, Capitoline, and Aventine hills, named in honour of the ancient city of Rome. The Imperial Palace is located on the Palatine hill. The Imperial Palace is a vast complex of buildings which stretch many kilometres into the air. The Imperial Palace is protected by two Imperial Guard divisions and is home to hundreds of thousands of employees. The palace features turbo lifts to aid in navigation, and extends deep underground, encompassing countless bunkers.

The ministries of state are located on the Capitoline hill, along with the Imperial Senate House and St. George's Cathedral. The ministries of state are vast buildings which stretch many kilometres into the air. The Imperial Senate House, by contrast, is wide, as it must accommodate many thousands of senators, each of which possesses their own private apartment, office, and staff. The Capitoline hill is protected by the Imperial Police Force, while the ministries of state and the Imperial Senate House are protected by the Imperial Guard. The final hill, the Aventine, is a closed military area. The offices of the Aletian armed forces, including the Imperial High Command building, are located here. The hills are connected by a processional avenue, known as Palace Street. Use of this avenue is restricted to the government and the armed forces. Public transportation is available in the form of moving walkways, buses, and a subway system.

The second district is the Business District. As the Business District surrounds the Palace District, a cordon exists between the two, which is manned by the Imperial Guard. The Imperial Forum is situated in the Business District. The Imperial Forum is the commercial heart of Alexandria and the Empire. Millions arrive on Laurentia every day to visit the Imperial Forum. Everything is sold there, from food, to clothes, to furniture, weapons, and vehicles. Cars are permitted in the Business District, unlike in the Palace District. Public transportation exists in the form of buses, trams, and a public subway system. To handle the vast amount of merchandise which is shipped to and from the district daily, several star ports are located close by. These feature multiple landing pads for shuttles and large cargo ships, and are connected to space elevators, which use electromagnetic rails to transport goods to and from freighters in orbit.

The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth districts are the outer districts. These are the main residential areas of Alexandria. Although the Palace District and the Business District feature residential areas, these are reserved for government employees. The outer districts features large areas of public parkland which separate urban areas. The campuses of the University of Alexandria and the Imperial Military Academy are both located in the outer districts. Several Imperial Guard military bases are also located in the outer districts. Armoured units equipped with powered armour and tanks are stationed within these bases, and guard the approaches to the city. These units work in conjunction with infantry and police stationed units in the city itself. The city's subway system does not extend as far as the outer districts, although bus and rail services are available, and cars are very common. The outer districts also feature several star ports.

The City of Alexandria was founded shortly after the colonisation of Laurentia, and originally consisted of a series of shelters which had been constructed from the remains of the Aletian colony fleet. These shelters were constructed on three hills, the Palatine, Capitoline, and Aventine, named in honour of the city of Rome. Although the original colonisation plan had called for the establishment of a unified planetary government, the despair of being stranded so far from home led to the fracturing of the colonial government and the rise of several competing factions, who fought for leadership over the colonists. Alexandria became the seat of one of these factions. To protect the city, the Federal Watch, the predecessor of the Aletian armed forces, was established. Led by Lord High Marshal Nicholas Kastellanos, the ancestor of the Nicolaides family, the Federal Watch quickly became one of the most powerful military forces on Laurentia.

Driven by the need for natural resources, Alexandria began to expand. This naturally brought the Alexandrians into conflict with the other colonists. Seeking to avoid a war, which would only serve to reduce the colonists already low numbers, the Alexandrians came to an agreement with their neighbours. The Treaty of Laurentia, signed in 2308, led to the foundation of the Aletian Republic. Alexandria, as the largest city in the Republic and instigator of the treaty, was designated the Republic's capital. Although, as a compromise, the power of the Alexandrians over the Republic's other cities was restrained, the Republic prospered. The population of Laurentia grew rapidly over the next fifty years due to a mix of high birth rates and state-mandated cloning, leading to the founding of countless more cities. To cope with this rapid growth, Alexandria was expanded, leading to the integration of neighbouring settlements into the city.

By 2600, the population of Laurentia had risen to over four billion people. To relieve pressure, cloning was ended and an interstellar colonisation programme was launched. With the expansion of the Aletian Republic into the stars, Alexandria became the capital of an interstellar state, and was further developed. The executive houses on the Palatine were demolished to make way for the Presidential Palace. The ministries of state were relocated to the Capitoline, which became the government district. The Aventine became a closed military area with the establishment of the Republic Guard. A processional roadway, Republic Street, was constructed to link the three areas together. The Business District was formally established. The suburbs were reorganised, and pollution was curtailed. The Aletians were acutely aware of the legacy of pollution and climate change from old Terra, and wished to avoid making the same mistakes.

This arrangement remained the same until the end of the Republic. A grand funeral for Theodora Nicolaides was planned to take place in the city after her death, but Alexander Nicolaides assaulted Laurentia before it could take place, recovering the body of his wife. Although much of Laurentia's garrison joined Alexander, the Republic Guard continued to resist. The fighting was so intense that the Presidential Palace and much of the city centre was destroyed. Both would be rebuilt following the establishment of the Aletian Empire. As part of the reconstruction plan, the ruins of the Presidential Palace were demolished to make way for the Imperial Palace. The ministries of state on the Capitoline were rebuilt and the Senate House was relocated to the site. The Aventine was redeveloped and designated as the headquarters of the Aletian armed forces. Lastly, Republic Street was redeveloped and enclosed, becoming Palace Street.
