The Democratic Republic of Free Azrelia, or simply just Free Azrelia or Azrelia, is a country in the southeast of the former United States. It gained its independence after breaking away from the Second American Confederation and convincing North Carolina to separate from the Federal Government and join their revolution.
The region consists of the former American states of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and parts of Tennessee. Azrelia's capital is Atlanta, Georgia with its largest city being Charlotte, North Carolina. Much of the information here is expected to become
Azrelia gets its name from the Abrahamic Angel of Death, Azrael, taking some inspiration from Georgia being named after King George II. When the name started being used isn't too well recorded, though before it was agreed on that the country would be named Azrelia, the name of the capital, Atlanta, was used instead of Georgia in order to differentiate the country from another already existing country in the Caucasus called Georgia.
Azrelia was one of the few names proposed after the Democratic Republic reached its height.
The Democratic Republic of Free Azrelia originally started off as a riot in the state of Georgia that eventually escalated into an insurrection, seizing the Confederation's control of the area and starting a civil war within the Confederation itself. Protests had been widely suppressed beforehand until the Confederation began its invasion of Texas. The Confederation didn't have a large military or police force, which allowed for protests, much more violent then before, to break out across the entire nation. This evolved into the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Florida and the Democratic Republic of Free Azrelia.
Pre-Independence Riots
Before the Atlanta Uprising, citizens had armed themselves and began raiding armories, police stations, and government owned buildings. Although some of these attacks failed, the success most of them had would be what allowed the Atlanta Uprising to happen in the first place. Several raids also occurred in Savannah and Macon.
Governor Brian Kemp had been the subject of various failed assassination attempts. Fearing for his life, he negotiated a deal with the Socialist Union and New England that they would allow him free travel into New England where he could live the rest of his life away from politics. This ultimately ended up being the case, and the moment news came out that Kemp was no longer in Georgia, the Atlanta Uprising began.
The Atlanta Uprising
The Atlanta Uprising was a series of events that lead to the establishment of Azrelia. Despite being called the Atlanta Uprising, there were major efforts in Savannah as well that helped the uprising expand outside of Georgia. Macon also helped with connecting the insurrectionists and splitting apart Confederate Georgia. The uprising would soon spread outside of Georgia into South Carolina. After South Carolina was ripped from the control of the Confederation, the Democratic Republic of Free Azrelia was established and North Carolina was offered to join. After this, Azrelia invaded East Tennessee, bringing Azrelia to its associated borders.
The Provisional Government
The establishment of the Provisional Government was done to allow the government further control over Azrelia while not directly interfering with the lives of the people in its borders.
The western part of Azrelia includes the Appalachian Mountains, including the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Clingmans Dome is the country's highest point at 6,643 feet. This region offers scenic landscapes, national parks, and robust opportunities for tourism.
Moving eastward, the Piedmont plateau covers parts of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, with rolling hills and fertile soil. This area supports much of Azrelia's agricultural activity, especially for crops like soybeans, cotton, and tobacco.
Azrelia has an extensive eastern coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, particularly in the South Carolina and North Carolina regions, featuring sandy beaches, tidal wetlands, and estuaries. Major port cities like Charleston and Savannah serve as hubs for trade, fishing, and tourism.
Azrelia had significant waterways, including rivers like the Savannah, Chattahoochee, and Catawba, which support agriculture, transportation, and energy generation. Its numerous lakes and reservoirs provided recreation and water resources, especially in the Piedmont and mountain regions.
Climate
Biodiversity and Conservation
The government of Azrelia has remained in a complicated situation. Although the government is ruled by the National Council of Atlanta, various positions in the government remain empty, which requires the military to fill some of these roles until the government can find qualified individuals to take over these positions.
Government
Near the time Azrelia was established, there was no true plan on how a government would be established. Stacey Abrams served as the temporary President of Azrelia until she established the National Council of Atlanta and resigned. Even then, the government was not yet fully established, and as of now, the Provisional Government doesn't have a constitution. Even with relative stability away from areas bordering the Confederation and the Federal Government, Azrelia continues to suffer from power vacuums that make the country significantly more difficult to maintain control over.
The National Council of Atlanta currently serves as a way to prevent a power struggle on who will be the president. Even as of now, it's unclear whether the NCA is a temporary solution or a permanent solution, its leaders not even having a direct answer. Azrelia does not have a fully organized government, and despite trying its best to maintain a democratic system, there were leaders who wanted full control in sections of the country, many of whom were forcibly removed by the NCA.
Some people advocate for the return of Brian Kemp to put him into power as President of Azrelia to replace the NCA, though before he fled to the Federation of New England, there were various assassination attempts against him, many of which ultimately failed, yet those who orchestrated these attempts were never caught. Various leaders within the government have stated that they'd be fine with Brian Kemp returning, though suggest against it as he'd possible be putting his life at risk and could further strengthen the movement to put him back into power. Said movement has also gone as far to try and assassinate the current government's leaders and commit acts of domestic terrorism against largely populated areas.
Foreign Relations
Azrelia has managed to develop stable relations with Florida, the Socialist Union, New England, Cascadia, and California. Azrelia has also been able to convince NATO countries such as France, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom to send aid to many of the break-away states, though these relations are expected to deteriorate with some NATO countries over time as Azrelia shifts to a socialist economy, identical to what the Socialist Union has set up. Canada has supported Azrelia the most out of any other country that isn't an American break-away state.
Military
Azrelia maintains a larger military than the Confederation. When Azrelia was finally established, many former veterans were pardoned for working with the Federal Government, and many that were forced out of service were offered to help defend Azrelia, defeat the Federal Government and the Confederation, and get rid of the issues that were brought as a result of Project 2025 and various other policies put in place by the GOP. Azrelia's military remains unorganized with no official branches, though this is expected to change in the future.
Law Enforcement and Crime
Large cities like Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Charleston have sizable police forces with specialized units (e.g., homicide, narcotics, gang task forces). These departments work independently of smaller town forces but collaborate on inter-jurisdictional cases. In more rural areas, law enforcement is handled primarily by county sheriffs, particularly in agricultural and mountainous regions. Sheriffs' offices are responsible for covering extensive, sparsely populated areas, requiring strong community ties.
Charlotte, North Carolina, a key financial hub, make Azrelia a major player in banking and finance, rivalling financial sectors in other large economies. Atlanta contributes as a business and transport hub, hosting multinational corporations and thriving in real estate, logistics, and consulting services.
The Piedmont region has long been home to manufacturing industries, including textiles, automotive, and aerospace sectors. The Research Triangle in North Carolina (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) serves as a powerhouse for biotech and technology startups, making Azrelia competitive in research and innovation.
The rich agricultural areas of eastern Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas produce major crops like cotton, soybeans, and tobacco, along with livestock. The forestry sector is also significant, with extensive forests in the mountainous regions supporting timber and paper industries.
Azrelia aims to become a leader in nuclear, hydroelectric, and renewable energy. Nuclear plants, especially in South Carolina, and hydroelectric facilities in the Appalachian region supply a steady energy output. Solar energy was also tapped in the sunny regions of the coastal plains and Piedmont.
Azrelia's varied geography could've made it a tourism hotspot, with attractions ranging from the Smoky Mountains to the Atlantic beaches. Cities like Charleston, Savannah, and Asheville could draw millions of tourists for historical sites, coastal beauty, and natural parks after the American Civil War is over.
Azrelia's strategic location along the East Coast, with major ports in Savannah and Charleston, makes it a significant logistics hub. Interstate highways and rail networks supported goods transportation throughout the country, and air transport hubs in Atlanta and Charlotte could enhance global connectivity in the near future.
Income
Cities like Atlanta, Charlotte, and Raleigh host higher-than-average incomes due to the prevalence of high-paying industries such as finance, technology, and corporate headquarters. Residents here generally enjoy strong economic opportunities, with high median household incomes, often exceeding $80,000–$100,000 USD. The Research Triangle in North Carolina, a major hub for tech and biotech, elevates income levels, with salaries for skilled positions in these sectors matching or exceeding previous national U.S. averages.
Areas surrounding the major cities and in the Piedmont region have median household incomes closer to the national average, around $60,000–$75,000 USD. This includes areas benefiting from regional industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and education. Coastal towns like Charleston and Savannah, with economies driven by tourism and service industries, have moderate to high incomes, especially for residents involved in tourism management, real estate, and hospitality.
Eastern Tennessee and parts of the Carolina foothills have lower income levels. Persistent poverty and limited access to high-wage jobs means household incomes closer to $35,000–$45,000 USD on average in these areas. In rural areas focused on agriculture, especially in South Georgia and parts of the Carolinas, income levels are also been lower due to the seasonal nature of agricultural work and lower wages associated with the sector.
Poverty
With a high overall GNI per capita, Azrelia's poverty rate is slightly lower than the rate of the United States' before its collapse, around 10-12%. However, regional variations contributed to higher poverty rates in certain areas.
Eastern Tennessee and mountainous areas of North Carolina experience poverty rates higher than the national average, due to historical economic challenges and limited access to high-paying industries. Areas along the coast and in parts of rural South Carolina and Georgia also experience elevated poverty rates. Seasonal employment, especially in agriculture and tourism, may lead to economic instability and increase poverty rates among families dependent on these sectors.
In cities like Atlanta and Charlotte, urban poverty was still present but somewhat mitigated by local economic opportunities. Some neighborhoods within these metropolitan areas still face high poverty rates, often as a result of housing costs and systemic issues related to urban poverty cycles.
Azrelia has a moderate level of income inequality, similar to original trends in the southeastern U.S. The highest earners in finance, tech, and corporate sectors in major cities contrast with lower-income workers in rural or agricultural areas, creating a noticeable income gap. However, Azrelia's growing industries offer opportunities to gradually reduce inequality with investment in rural development, education, and job creation.
Potential transition to socialism
Although Azrelia maintains high success with its capitalist economy, the government expresses interest in shifting Azrelia's economy from a capitalist economy to a socialist economy. Despite this, Azrelia still cooperates with businesses and corporations for the purpose of boosting the economy before the transition begins. Much of Azrelia's industry is still controlled by the private sector.

Population
Azrelia maintains a large population that is expected to increase as it expands across the south. With the ongoing civil war and the violence that occurs within Azrelia after it had already been established, the population of Azrelia cannot be estimated without drastic changes to already collected data as it's collected.
Language
Like the United States, the most commonly spoken language is English, though there is no official language. This has remained the case since Azrelia was first established.
Religion
Christianity remains the largest religion across Azrelia. The government aims to keep Azrelia a secular nation unlike the United States and the Confederation. Christian nationalism was and still is high in some various regions due to the culture and history of the south, but is heavily supressed by Azrelia's government.
Urbanization
Atlanta, Charlotte, and Raleigh are the three most populated cities in Azrelia with Charleston, Atlanta, and Greenville being the most densely populated. Atlanta, Charlotte, and Raleigh serve as economic and cultural hubs of Azrelia. Even before the Civil War, these three cities were already experiencing significant growth, attracting families and young people looking for opportunities in the United States. When the Civil War started and the Confederation declared independence, a large portion of people from these cities left into lesser-populated rural areas, fearing that these cities would've been major targets of the Federal Government and the Confederation.

Education
Literature and Visual Arts
Various pieces of literature have been written in correlation to Azrelia's independence, many referencing Henry Clay Work's "Marching through Georgia" and Florence Reece's "Which Side Are You On?".
Cinema and Theater
Music
As Azrelia's literature have made references to music, Azrelia's music, so far made to call for independence before establishment and increase morale after the revolution against the Confederation and the Federal Government began. Marching through Georgia would become popular among Azrelians, eventually becoming the unofficial national anthem of Azrelia.
