The Home Guard for the Fenvaria Republic is a rather curious branch of the Department of National Security, as they are both a police force and a national guard. The Home Guard’s duty is to protect the Fenvarian homefront, enforce Fenavrian law, help with national/planetary disasters, and oftentimes the first line of defense against foreign invasions. While they are under DNS, when a planet is being invaded or in times of war the Home Guard would be placed under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense. But, for the most time they stay under the Department of National Security when it comes to peacetime operations. While they are under DoD jurisdiction, Home Guardsmen planetside will be placed under Army command and the same will happen for the naval assets of the Home Guard. This force is supposed to assist the Army and Navy assets and/or to hold out long enough until they arrive.
There are three major sub-branches within the Home Guard, that is the Spatial Guard, Coastal Patrol and the Planetary Guard.
When it comes to training, the Home Guard is expected to undergo the same style training as the Republic Armed Forces but, this training is not as intensive and focused more on law enforcement. However, that does not mean that the Home Guard is not well trained for large scale combat like that of the Armed Forces. These Guardsmen know how to operate small arms, heavy weapons, armored vehicles, understand tactics, how to board ships and so on. As for their equipment, the Home Guard is often given the same military grade equipment as the rest of the military.
That means the ground divisions have access to things like Sabertooth Main Battle tanks, gunships, fighter jets and so on. However, most of the time they use dropships, LRVs, trucks and IFVs/APCs. The Spatial Guard on the other hand is rather limited with their ships, most of the time these forces are outfitted with destroyers, cruisers, and sometimes battlecruisers. But, they have full access to the different types of void fighters that the Navy has. This is due to their more defensive nature and how they also have to man the system defenses, so it was rationalized that the Spatial Guard would forgo the heavier warships in favor of manning the system defenses. Also, they were mostly going to be fighting pirate ships, not all pirates are going to have battleships.
While there is crime in the Republic most of the time it is petty offenses, however, there are times when it does become violent. For this, the Home Guard has adopted a rather heavy handed approach towards violent crime; this means things like employing body armor, heavily armed law enforcement officers, and relentlessly pursuing the offenders. This is further reinforced by the highly martial culture of the Republic, so it was only a matter of time before the Home Guard became a paramilitary formation.
It is noted that when Terrestrial Home Guardsmen are searching a known location of a terrorist or violent criminal/crime organization, they can be rather ruthless in doing so. They will often use the front of their APCs to crash through the walls or front door of the location, then offloading their complement of Guardsmen. After being offloaded, the Guardsmen will then sweep the entire house and eliminate anyone that poses a threat to them. Once the house or location has been cleared and secured, they will then drag out the survivors for a field interrogation. While field interrogation is going on, the remaining officers will search the house from top to bottom, looking over every single nook and cranny for evidence.
Despite this heavy handed approach to violent crime and violent criminals, the Home Guard takes a more off handed approach towards non violent crime. In short, the Home Guard when working with non violent crime takes a more community-intelligence led approach. Reaching out to communities by helping them with small things in hopes to further the bond with the community. The idea is that the more friendly an officer is with a community the more the community will open up to the police force, so that violent criminals can be taken off the streets and get their justice.
Terrestrial Home Guard
Possibly one of the largest branches of the Home Guard, the Terrestrial Guard serves as the land component of the Home Guard. They are responsible for maintaining law and order in places like cities, towns, and villages as well as being the land fighting force in the event of an invasion. The Terrestrial Guard has a number of different vehicles, ranging from the most basic of LRVs to fighter jets but, most of the time they are patrolling around in dropships, LRVs and IFVs. Most of the time, Terrestrial Home Guard forces will have access to the most basic of vehicles but this can vary from planet to planet depending on industrialization and population. As for weapons, they have pretty much full access to Republic Army level weaponry except when it comes to body armor. Instead they are given a more civilianized version of the Mk V, that does not have a shielding module. They also have a wide range of infantry based weapons, both small and heavy weapons that are also used by the Republic army, this is done to help easy logistical issues between both the Home Guard and the Army when they are working together in the defense of a planet. Finally, unsurprisingly; they also have armored personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles, armored cars, and so on.
Coastal Home Patrol
The Coastal Patrol of the Home Guard is a rather obscure and rather old branch dating back to the time when the Fenvarians were stuck on Arcadia and lacked the means to travel the stars. Often referred to as the “Wet Navy” the Coastal Patrol is responsible for patrolling all of the bodies of water that reside on every Fenvarian held planet, making sure that planetary based pirate gangs and criminal groups are kept in check. The coastal patrol is largely made up of; cruisers, amphibious assault ships, destroyers, patrol boats and coastal battleships. However, this can vary wildly from planet to planet depending on how industrialized and built up the planet is but, for the most part it is safe to say that most of the habitable planets within the Republic have a coastal patrol element. Being a part of the Home Guard, they have access to pretty much the same military standard equipment as the rest of the Guard.

Spatial Home Guard
The second largest branch of the Home Guard, the Spatial Home Guard is responsible for maintaining and defending space borne defenses as well as patrolling the system in search of criminals or pirates. Utilizing smaller and faster craft then the navy, the Spatial Home Guard is quite effective in checking your typical pirate bands and gangs, but they lack larger ships to take on full blown invasion fleets. However, they are still using military grade ships and weapons on their ships making them rather difficult to deal with, but they still dont not have the numbers that the navy has. As for their ships, they are mostly of the destroyer pattern and light carriers with some cruisers and very rarely some battlecruisers. They also make extensive use of void based fighters to do scouting and recon missions, these assets are usually launched from defense stations or light carriers to scout out areas that have seen an increase in pirate activity.
