Estonland

The Kingdom of Estonland commonly called Estonland, is a constitutional kingdom in Northeast Europe. It is bordered on the north by Sami Republic, on the south by Prussia and Poland, by the east by Russian Confederation and on the west by the Baltic Sea. Estonland covers - square kilometers and has has an estimated population of 65 million. Estonland comprises of 25 provinces and 5 regions.

Etymology

Estonland gets its name from the tribe that inhabited most of the original Duchy Of Estonland from 7th century AD to the 12nd century AD.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of Estonland is as a "Estonische."

History

Estonland was founded as a duchy in what is today the Saaremaa, Neutallinn Capital and Narva provinces. However it was a vassal of the much more powerful Danish Empire until 12nd July 1468, when Duke Karl I, commonly called today as "The Founding Father" incited a rebellion against the Danish overlords. Estonland declared seccession from the HRE in 1543 and embraced the Lutheran Reformation, declaring itself a Grand Duchy. The Thirty Years war left a scar on Estonland, caused by successive Swedish and Polish occupations until a counter-strike into what was then Lithuania destroyed the Polish-Swedish coalition. Tallinn was also burnt down during the war, rebuilt as Neutallinn. In 1700, Estonland faced its greatest threat ever-invasion by the Russian Tsar. After a costly retreat to Ingria, the Russian army was defeated at the Christmas Miracle. Heavy territorial concessions to Estonland were given, and three years later Grand Duchess Alexandra declared herself as Queen Of Estonland, now known as "The Founding Mother". In 1721, Estonische ships accidentally discovered Australia and settled the west coast. Madagascar was also settled during this time period and Greenland as well as Iceland were annexed after a short war with the Danish. The 19th century went calm for Estonland, with a constitution being enacted, the colonial empire grown and many social advancements(Women's suffrage in 1880, the earliest in the world.). World War 1 caused an economic recession despite Estonland staying neutral, as the Baltic Sea was blockaded. The Interwar period saw two attempted fascist coups and a revolt in Riga that almost led to communist revolution. King Albrecht thus suspended parliament on 1st January 1933 and started ruling with a Royal Council until 1935, when new elections were held. Estonland declared neutrality upon the start of World War 2 in 1938, but was repeatedly accidentally bombed by German planes. After another bombing incident led to a border standoff, Estonland got declared war on by Germany, which quickly defeated obsolete Estonische border units and occupied Riga until a counter-attack drove them back to Königsberg. After WW2, Estonland became one of the founding members of NATO as well as the EEC, as well as a "Bulwark Against Marxism", with the third-strongest military within NATO as of 1968.

Geography

Estonland is overwhelmingly composed of forests, swamps and grasslands. The western and northern regions are generally more forested while the southern and eastern regions are flatter. The swamps of Neugorod are world-famous. The highest point in Estonland is in Tampere Province, at 500~ meters.

Most of Estonland with the exception of inland, Russian-speaking provinces, has a maritime climate with cool summers and chilly winters. The average temperature for January is -4 degrees celcius while the July average is 25. The Gulf Of Finland usually freezes at winters, necessiating the use of icebreakers.

Estonland is renowned for its large forests, especially in Kurland Province and the Finnmark Region. Lakes are located all through the country and are popular camping spots. The rushed industrialisation of the 19th century has caused a lot of pollution in the Petersburg Province, and as a result the water of Lake Ladoga is not considered safe for consumption.

Demographics

Population
The population of Estonland is 65 million. Most of the population(47%) is of German origin, followed closely by Russians(30%) and Finns(15%). The number of Latvians and other Baltic tribes are low, mainly due to assimilation or immigration to the colonies or Americas. The last census was held on 3rd July 1964, with the next one due on 4th July 1969.

Language
The sole national-level language of Estonland is German. An overwhelming majority of the population(89%) has reported that they are fluent in German. Native languages other than German are recognised in their regions, such as Russian in Neugorod Province. Children may opt to get taught the regional languages or not, but German is compulsory. 56% of respondents claimed German as their language at home, Russian 29% and Finnish 12%.

Religion

Estonland is officially secular, and the government officially recognised three faiths: Roman Catholic Church, Estonische Reformed Lutheran Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Judaism was also recognised, however the recognition was dropped after most of Estonland's Jews immigrated to Israel in the aftermath of WW2. Piety is uncommon in Estonland, and in unofficial polls about 65% stated they're irreligious, almost half of them atheists. Among churches, the Eastern Orthodox Church and Reformed Lutheran enjoy similar numbers, roughly 13% each. The Roman Catholic Church enjoys very limited membership, mainly concentrated in Lithuanien Province.

Race
Estonische people do not have a single race, and the population is mixed up. Genetic testing has shown that most Estonische people descend from Proto-Baltic or Germanic origins, with Slavs in third place.

Government

Estonland is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. The ruling monarch, currently Queen Louise Victoria II, symolises the unity of the nation and is responsible, among other things, for caling elections, and has limited veto powers. The parliament is bicameral, with the Landtag as the lower house(elected on a provincial basis), and the Reichstag as the upper house(elected on a regional basis). The Chancellor usually is the leader of the majority party, however coalitions are known for choosing their chancellors regardless of party rule. The Queen ceremonially approves the choice for chancellor, who then forms the cabinet which has to be approved by a joint session of the parliament. Bills start in the Landtag, and proceed to the Reichstag that can amend or veto it. The bill is then sent to the Queen. The Queen may veto only twice. According to the 1880 Cultural Autonomy Act, 20% of all parliamentary seats must be from ethnic minorities of the said regions/provinces(if from a region/province with a recognised minority group).

Foreign Relations and Military

Estonland is a member of the NATO and has a permanent seat in the Security Council of the United Nations(one of the seven members alongside USA, USSR, the Republic of China, France, the United Kingdom and the Dutch Republic).Estonland enjoys friendly relations with all NATO members, and is a common mediator in international conflicts. Estonische diplomats are known for being consulted in disagreements. Estonland's biggest ally is perhaps the United States of America, with very prominent military, economic and diplomatic links. As such, Estonische troops are currently engaged in combat in Vietnam, with a 5000-strong contingent of the Royal Marines and an air wing of 12 F-4 ground strike fighters.

Estonland has a well-developed, modern economy based on Industry 3 and industrial technology. Estonische electronics, tech and engineering firms are considered among the best worldwide, including several shipbuilding giants. Estonland follows the so-called "Rhine capitalism" model, with a strong free market balanced by social security and welfare. The main exports in 1967-1968 fiscal year were: Electronics, vehicle parts, forestry products including pulp and refined gold, as well as seafood.

Culture

Estonland, despite its multiculturalism, has managed to form a single national culture. Russian, Baltic, Finnish and German cultures have affected Estonland a lot-and has created a melting pot. The cuisine is especially knwn for combining tastes-the city of Neugorod for example is famous for blending Latvian-style potatoes with Russian soups. In the area of music, most pop bands are German whereas metal music is under control of Finns. Russians dominate orchestral music and rap, and traditional Baltic folk songs are very popular, with a new trend called "Baltic pop" emerging-folk songs re-written in pop style. Estonland doesn't have a well-developed cinema sector of its own, but individual projects my some minor studios have been moderately successful.

Infrastructure

Estonland has a well-maintained net of railroads, highways and other road infrastructure. The oldest railway still running is in Estonland-the Petersburg-Königsberg line which was completed in 1868. A set of canals link the White Sea to the Baltic, and ferry transport is extremely popular. Railroads are more common in the Northern parts than the southern parts-primarily due to the difficulty of maintaining paved roads in the infamous Finnish winter. Domestic air transport is not very popular, due to relatively short distances involved(the longest flight is 2 hours), and the advent of high-speed trains. Tap water is drinkable in all of Estonland-the water is one of the cleanest in the world. Electricity has been widespread since the early 1900's, but some towns in the north have only gotten electrical grids in the 1960's. While radio has been prominent since the launching of the national broadcast service KFB in 1951, television has only just penetrated the middle class, with about 28% of Estonische households owning a television set. Programming for radio-TV is mainly in German(only language for state media), but regional channels have minority language programming.

Energy
Estonland is heavily dependent on foreign imports for fossil fuels. The oil crises of 1956 and 1963 have thus contributed to the unpopularity of motor transport in Estonland, and most power plants have been switched from coal-firing to nuclear. As a nuclear power both domestically and militarily, Estonland has a large reserve of plutonium and thus power blackouts are very rare.
