Etymology

The word "Colmaijo" likely derives from the Old Voralican language, which was spoken by the original inhabitants of the region where the Horde. In Old Voralican, the word "col" (pronounced "kohl") meant "great" or "grand," while the word "maijo" (pronounced "MAH-joh") meant "republic" or "confederation."

It is possible that the name "Colmaijo" was originally used to describe the largest and most powerful of the kingdoms within the Colmaij Horde, which would eventually become the capital of the entire union. Over time, the name came to be associated with the entire union itself, and it eventually became the commonly used name for the union as a whole.

History

Main article: History of Colmaijo

The Great and Glorious Republics of Colmaijo has a long history that can be traced back to the Colmaij Horde, which was a union of independent dukes and kingdoms in the territories of Colmaijo and Voralica. The Horde was founded in 1356 by merchant kings and princes who wanted to rival the great empires to the west. At its height, the Horde had 11 kingdoms, 19 duchies, and 27 principalities, each with its own culture and traditions. The union was governed by a council of representatives from each kingdom that met annually in Moskau to discuss trade and diplomacy.

The Horde maintained peace and prosperity for centuries until it was invaded by the Kingdom of Great Barredo in 1463. In the ensuing chaos, several kingdoms and duchies declared independence and formed the Federal Socialist States of Colmaijo led by Alexander Havana. The Colmaij forces fought against the Barredonians and the Horde for forty years until General John Havard led them to victory in 1503.
Colmaijo then became a parliamentary republic in 1790 after breaking free from the Bigtopian Empires.

Colmaijo faced a civil war in 1936 when Chancellor Chandra Hyde overturned the constitution and ran for a third term, but he was eventually ousted and executed by a popular uprising led by the Colmaij Free Army. Between 1940 and 2008, Colmaijo experienced a period of growth and stability called the Great Miracle. In 2055, Colmaijo united with Barredo and Émerance to form the union of Colbaria, with Colmaijo being the largest in economy and population. However, the union was short-lived and broke apart the same year.
