We're almost certain you won't enjoy your stay. No one does.
If you're looking at everything below this and thinking "what the hell is this? How am I meant to go about reading it?", then, well... I can't help you, I'm afraid. However, I can tell you very briefly what it is, though I do encourage you to give the note below this and the content linked in the banners a read-through.
The setting for the content here is a rather large one, and cannot be easily summarized succinctly, but in a nutshell is a region of human-colonized space full of dead worlds and moderately less dead orbiting habitats called the 98th Corridor, in reference to its status as the 98th of a number of FTL gate-lane corridors to be constructed by a long-bygone power dubbed the Colonial Authority (better documented here if you've got the time), and colloquially called "Liam's Reach" in reference to the captain of the surveyor that explored the majority of the corridor, one Liam Reyes. It was- emphasis on was- primarily governed until very recently by the Confederacy of Liam's Reach, or more simply the Confederacy and generally the Reach, a state very proud of its semi-democratic nature in a stellar environment not friendly to that sort of thing and very, very eager to give its neighbors a taste of democracy.
Understandably, that got grating for its neighbors, and in 2987- eight years before this tale takes place- said neighbors determined to kick its teeth in. The end result of that short and bloody war was a much-reduced Reach, the majority of the corridor having fallen into disarray, its borders having shrunk to less than half their original size and a little under a third of the total corridor, and its government overthrown from within and puppeted by the victorious conquering powers. That Interim Military Government and its ruling Committee for Security and Stability today struggle to maintain control over their borders, facing remnant Confederacy forces like Bishop's Fleet, raiding privateers under the Rudin banner and more, other, more... independent successors, and mercenaries like Sacha's Valkyries with a vested interest in remaining open for business. It has to contend too with the odd Cult of Eternal Prosperity slowly migrating through its territory, the Van Heerden Development mercantile company attempting to expand its business into the corridor, and its unruly partner in the Gang of Twelve- the very alliance its predecessor was pitted against- the Assembly of Free Unions. Its sub-organs like Project FREERANGE, working alongside- and occasionally against- the State, struggle too to clean up certain... errors... of the Confederacy's old guard.
It has been eight years since the Confederacy fell, and things have hardly begun to look up since then. In fact, considering the rampant warlordism, rogue battle-fleets, opportunistic tendrils of other powers worming their way into the Confederacy's corpse, cults- of personality and of faith- popping up at its fringes, and general strife remnant from even the Colonial Authority's two-hundred-years-removed collapse, it would be an understatement to say that it's gotten quite worse.
Like I said- welcome to Liam's Reach. You'd be right to think that things are a bit chaotic right now.
So. An explanation is in order for why I've done this, I suppose, and how it's """meant""" to be read.
In a nutshell, well- I'm a person who has no clue how to properly manage time and who has far more ideas in their head than skill to implement them with. That should be made clear by the truly vast number of placeholder titles beneath this gloss, most of which are meant to lead to complete projects of their own, at least when they're finished with. Because, really, that's what this is- an attempt to detail not just a nation, or a set of nations, but a whole region's worth. Or, more accurately, a Reach's.
When this project is completed, if it ever is, then the reader will be able to explore a region of space wracked by a number of posts; post-collapse (several of them!), post-democratic, post-agricultural, post-terrestrial- Liam's Reach, named for its eponymous explorer "Liam", colonized by the long-collapsed Colonial Authority, until recently governed by the fiercely democratic (in name), expansionist, antagonistic Confederacy of Liam's Reach, now divided up into dozens of petty, squabbling powers rather than just a few of them. Its most colorful inhabitants can be read about below, in some form or another, and hopefully in a comprehensible form within the next twenty years. If this website still exists then. They are presented in no particular order but in the one in which they were conceived; with the exception of the first and last.
As this project remains a work in progress, below the reader may find a construction schedule. No hard dates are set there, given this endeavor exists as a passion project of a passion project, but it should serve as both a guide to what remains and a hint at what might come. If you even care, that is. Selected out-of-character information may be found at the end of this hub as well, linked in separate dispatches. There's quite a lot I feel is unclear, and as such it shall be presented in a more comprehensible manner until such time as it can be found ICly. Not to mention even at an early stage there's quite a lot of material on the cutting-room floor, and presenting it in one way or another might interest at least a few godforsaken souls with far too much time on their hands. I wish I had some of that.
Oh, and if I haven't mentioned it yet- everything here is designed for dark mode, as there's some visual tricks there that don't work in light. So, for the best reading experience, please switch to that theme. Additionally, wider screens are better, as they avoid image-cramping.
