Revolutionary War

"To be a socialist - to be a Marxist - is to love your country. It is to sense the seed beneath the soil; to see that, beneath the venear of corruption and comercialization there are men and women capable of fantastic things. To be a radical is, in the only real sense of the word, patriotic."
- Thomas Wiker, Circa 2010

Thomas Gunbiorn Carl Wiker (Born: April 6th, 1983) is a Callianan writer, political theorist, socialist revolutionary and statesman, currently serving as the 1st President of the National Republic of Calliana, as well as the founder and Chairman of the National Revolutionary Party of Calliana. He was previously a prominent figure within the Callianan Republican movement during the early to mid-2000s, the Supreme Commander of the National Revolutionary Army during the Callianan Revolutionary War, and was a member of the National Republican Convention from 2010 until 2015. In Gunnar Hylander's provisional government he briefly served as the Acting Secretary of the Army, before assuming the role of Provisional Leader.

Wiker's rule has been defined by his commitments to social justice and workers' rights, his crackdown on corruption and modernization efforts, along with his push to transform Calliana into a socialist republic; nationalizing banks and large-scale industry and redistributed land among lower-class rural labourers. He is also recognized as a unifying figure between the White Calli people and indigenous Urfolk, having encouraged multiculturalism and racial tolerance since coming into office. Wiker is well known for his aggressive foreign policy, guided by anti-imperialist and left-wing nationalist sentiments, greatly increasing Calliana's international prestige. Many of his detractors have criticized Wiker for his more authoritarian tendencies and strongman persona, although he still enjoys popular support across most of Calliana and is seen as a national icon. For his role in the Revolutionary War Wiker is viewed as one of the founding fathers of the Calliana Second Republic, along with Gunnar Hylander, Casper Gyldenlove, and Eric Osland.

Early Life

Thomas Wiker was born on April 6th, 1983 in the northern Callianan city of Forsa to Lily Wiker, a 17-year-old dancer and prostitute. Lily claimed that Thomas' father was a "wealthy American", one of her clients, although his name and identity remain a mystery. It is not known whether or not his father is aware of his existence, and Thomas was raised exclusively by his mother with the help of fellow dancers. Life in the impoverished slums of Forsa wasn't easy for the teenage mother who struggled to make ends meet. When Thomas was three, Lily married a married Jon Paulsson, a local warehouse worker and soon gave birth to Thomas' four half-siblings: Freya and Sander, both of whom died in infancy, Sanna, who was born in 1988 and Carina, who was born in 1992.

Jon and Lily's marriage was anything but happy, however. Jon was known to be a heavy drinker and rapidly spiralled out of control after losing his job amidst Calliana's devastating recession of 1989. His drinking was also exacerbated by Lily's decidedly unsavoury reputation, and he would often become violent, beating his wife and young children and acting out in public. With Jon spending his days either passed out on the family's sofa or sobering up in a jail cell, Lily shouldered the responsibility of raising her children almost entirely on her own. She took up menial jobs throughout the city, mainly housework, sewing and laundering, determined to give her children a better life than what she had been able to live. Eventually, she had saved up enough to enrol Thomas in St. Ville's Academy, a Catholic all-boys school.

At the Academy Wiker stood out among his peers for all the wrong reasons. Although he was rather short compared to the other boys his age, Wiker possessed a fiery temper and a propensity for fighting. He was sensitive to insults, particularly those directed at his mother and sisters, and his stubborn nature kept him from backing down, earning him countless bruises and scars which he wore proudly. According to his mother, he developed an "affinity for the powerless" and was eager to combat perceived injustices he encountered. Despite this, his teachers took notice of his intelligence and potential. He was encouraged to dedicate more time to his studies, and he soon began to demonstrate an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He was an avid reader and gifted writer, publishing several poems between 1999 and 2001, dealing with topics such as patriotism, poverty, and religion. When he wasn't buried in a mountain of books, Wiker was a skilled sportsman, with a talent for boxing and long-distance running.

Education and Early Career

The University of Salza
In 2001 Wiker left Forsa and travelled south to the bustling metropolis of Salza to further his education. There, he chose to study law, desiring to become a barrister. He believed that by becoming a lawyer he would be able to raise his family from their state of poverty, and for a moment it seemed as though that's exactly what he would do. He was regarded as a bright student, with a gift for writing and sharp wit that leant itself to oratory prowess. Unfortunately, he struggled to adapt to life in Salza. He found the city's prevailing conservative atmosphere stifling, and was often discriminated against by his upper-class peers. He found an outlet for his frustrations in the realm of politics and was soon swept up in the radical undercurrents than ran throughout the University.

By the early 2000s, Calliana had descended into a state of chaos. Poverty dominated the streets of major cities, while indigenous farmers in the countryside lived in squalor. Wiker placed the blame for such problems directly in the hands of a few dozen families and corporations that dominated the vast majority of Calliana's industry and land, many of them American and Brittish, not Calli. These groups propped up the immensely unpopular Jarlsberg Dynasty and King Carl IV Romund, who in turn gave them free rein over the nation. Eager to induce change across Calliana, Wiker joined the Social Democratic Federation in 2002. With the Social Democrats, his talents as a writer and public speaker were quickly put to good use. He was given a position writing for the Social Democrats' student newspaper, The Spark, publishing a number of articles, as well as short stories criticizing the Jarlsbergs. His fiery rhetoric made him a popular voice among the student community, won him connections with activists across the country, from fellow students like Eric Osland, who became one of his closest friends, to the leader of the SDF, Espen Myran. In 2003, after Wiker published a particularly scathing article criticising the King, The Spark's Salza office was raided by royalist police. They smashed Wiker's computers, burned papers, and when the 20-year-old protested he was arrested.

Although he was charged with sedition, his legal mentor Arvid Ivars - a well known Communist - was able to ensure that Wiker would only spend six months in prison, rather than years. Still, Myran disavowed Wiker and had him expelled from the party. From then on the young man shifted irrevocably towards the path of revolution. Above all, he was frustrated at how easily the police had been able to extinguish The Spark and bend the SDF to their will. Political violence had become increasingly commonplace across Calliana, and the Jarlsbergs employed the police, political paramilitaries, and gangs to intimidate their opponents into silence. After being released from prison, Wiker severed his ties with the Social Democrats and along with fellow students Eric Osland, Jacob Marsson, Marcus Hareide, Rosa Thorson, and Leon Bergman, founded the Iron Guards, an armed and well-trained militia of young workers and students.

The Iron Guards were founded upon the principles of Callianan nationalism and Christian socialism, as promoted by the 19th-century Calli revolutionaries Marius Lind and Arnstein Ibsson. Based on a casual conversation Wiker became Minister of Propaganda, but threw himself at the position with vigour. He continued to write, documenting the Guards' goals in The Workingman's Gospel in 2005; advocating the abolishment of the monarchy, ethnic minority rights and a host of other liberal reforms. But he also sought to engage Salza's working-class on a more personal level. He would frequent taverns and school campuses to recruit for the Guards and educate people about their program, expanding their membership into the thousands. First and foremost, however, the Guards were a paramilitary. Occasionally they would make the news with a show of force, as they did when they briefly occupied the University of Salza to protect student protests from royal police in 2007. They also studied guerrilla warfare, and stockpiled weapons for the revolution they prayed was around the corner. The Guards were also accused of less savoury activities: running drugs, smuggling weapons, racketeering, and murdering their political rivals. Wiker was arrested a number of times in connection with gang shootings, but few charges ever stuck.

In 2007 Wiker met with Casper Gyldenlove, a representative of parliamentary opposition leader Gunnar Hylander of the Democratic League. The Democratic League had been facing increased pressure from the Royalists and sought protection, although Gyldenlove also managed to convince many of the Guards that by supporting the League they would stand a better chance at overthrowing the monarchy. Wiker was sceptical, and certainly not eager to rejoin the rat race of mainstream politics, but upon meeting Hylander his mind was quickly changed. He took a liking to Hylander's principles of republicanism, socialism, and democracy, and the two grew close to one another in the years leading up to the revolution. Hylander took Wiker under his wing as his protege; among other things teaching him the art of politics, how to move in high society and restrain his temper. Even then, as hard as he tried to fit in with the upper-class Wiker struggled to escape his status as a bastard from the slums of Forsa, while his stubborn refusal to compromise made him few allies. Those allies he made, however, were fanatics like him. In 2008, he fell in love with Eliza Bernstein, an educated countess of the Anglo-Calli ruling class who to, had turned to revolutionary socialism. The two began dating in secret, even though the Bernstein family disapproved of the match.

In 2009 Wiker attended the first session of the National Republican Convention in Salza. The Convention was a broad alliance of anti-monarchist parties, from conservative republicans to radical socialists and communists. While his Catholic faith kept Wiker from fully supporting the Communists, Wiker could not help but sympathize with their cause. He befriended a young communist, Caroline Nordin, who introduced him to the works of Marx, Lenin, and Mao. Combining Marxism with Calli nationalism, Wiker published The Revolutionary Republic in 2010, calling for the establishment of a republican government in Calliana, with extensive land reform, the nationalization of major industries and protections for social justice. His work ultimately inspired Hylander's Plan of Salza, although he felt disappointed with the many revisions Hylander applied, leaving out certain references to Marxism. Hylander feared Wiker's radical stance could alienate potential supporters, while Wiker felt as though his good deeds would speak for themselves.

Callianan Revolutionary War

Gunnar Hylander proclaims the
Calliana Republic, circa 2010
Following the Good Friday Massacre of republican protesters on April 2nd, 2010, Hylander declared the Calliana Republic and called for revolutionary action against the King. His call was heard across the Kingdom, but not for long. In the major cities of Brenna, Kristianasberg, Winterfort and Forsa the uprisings were swiftly put down, with scores of suspected republicans being rounded up and executed, Lily Wiker among them. The Royalist Army was quick to turn its sights to Salza, expecting to walk over the rebels as they had before. However, upon entering the city they were not met by a disorganized mob, but rather a small army of Iron Guardsmen and an incensed Thomas Wiker. The guards were outnumbered 10 to 1 but fought tooth and nail, determined to keep their revolution alive. Wiker found himself leading a column of guardsmen in the battle, ultimately taking the royalist Garrison in the city along with its vast armoury, distributing arms and ammunition to rioters. This managed to turn the tides of the battle and by July 2nd, the republicans had taken Salza.

The revolution had survived by the skin of its teeth, but was still far from over. Faced with few other options, the Convention voted to adopt the Iron Guards as their military wing, reorganizing them as the National Revolutionary Army. With few experienced officers to recruit from, Hylander gave command of the Army to Hareide and promoted Wiker to the rank of Commandant-General. This put him in command of a small force; between 2 and 300 guardsmen and around 700 local volunteers, with which he would embark in mid-July, 2010 into the low mountains in the south. His course would take him along the banks of the Black River, through Kristianasberg before descending from the mountains on Brenna, exposing the capital to a three-pronged attack from Wiker and Bergman's army from the south, Hareide and Osland from the interior, and Thorson and Marrsson from the north.

Wiker's militia came to be known as the Army of the Mountaineers for their uncanny ability to traverse the low mountains and outmanoeuvre their opponents. The young general himself quickly proved to a masterful guerrilla, loved by the men and women in his charge for his bravery, and feared by his enemies for his ruthlessness and cunning. His royalist counterpart, Gustav Morgan, would often lament the ease with which Wiker seemed to appear and disappear, emerging from the trees just long enough to massacre battalions of Royalists and American Volunteers before vanishing back into the wild, coining his non de guerre, "The Black Fox". To achieve this, Wiker had ingratiated himself with local tenant farmers and workers, particularly those associated with Innu tribes. Witnessing the appalling conditions in which villagers were forced to live, Wiker managed to win the tentative support of Amon Chicago, a local leader of the Urfolk, by promising land reform, improved infrastructure, and reparations for the centuries of violent pogroms. Swelling his ranks with 800 of Chicago's Innu fighters, Wiker managed to lead his men to victory in Kristianasberg against a force of 10,000 royalists by August of 2013, despite being outnumbered 5 to 1.

By liberating Kristinasberg, Wiker had won a signal victory - gaining him worldwide renown and the adulation of Calli republicans across the country. He continued to march through the south, his numbers growing in every village and city he managed to liberate. His progress east was met increasingly with celebration rather than resistance, as his promises of reform and generousness towards locals earned him the reputation as the "Calli Robin Hood". His successes earned him a promotion to Staff General, following the death of Hareide at Winterfort, putting the 30-year-old in command of the entire Revolutionary Army. It was around this time, however, that Wiker began to fall out of favour with the Convention. He considered many of its members to be too bourgeois and unconcerned with raising Calliana's people out of poverty. He openly questioned his mentor's decision to enter a coalition with the Constitutionalist Party under Hugo Sommer, Count of Borja - a shrewd, liberal politician Wiker simply couldn't trust. Ironically, he attempted to push the Democratic League in a decidedly non-democratic direction, fearing what the opportunist Borja would do the country if given power. His efforts were countered by Hylander, as well as Osland, both staunch supporters of the democratic process.

By the Summer of 2014, Wiker's Army had grown to almost 20,000 men. He had come down from the mountains and linked up with Osland's Central Army, winning successive victories at Vallinn, Carlstad, and Lovala, during which he managed to capture Morgan and the Royalist field marshall, John Helsing. Supported by both industrial workers in urban centres and poor farm workers in the countryside, Wiker was able to advance with frightening speed before laying siege to Brenna in the fall. Though they fought hard, the royalists were hopelessly outnumbered and it was clear the war would soon be at its end. By December, Wiker and Osland were joined by Thorson from the north, driving the final nail into the Jarlsbergs' coffin. Realizing all was lost, Carl attempted to flee the city through the sewers, though he wouldn't get far. On December 23rd, 2014, he was discovered by republicans and summarily executed, along with much of his family. With the King dead, the remaining loyalists surrendered, bring the war to an end by New Years Day. For a glorious moment, Wiker could see a bright future for Calliana. Thousands had died during the war, including his own mother and good friends Hareide and Marsson, but believed they had died fighting for justice. On January 2nd, 2015, Wiker and Bernstein were married in a small ceremony in St. Romund's Cathedral. The euphoria of victory, however, would be tragically short-lived.

Post-Revolutionary Government

On December 27th, 2014, Hylander was sworn in as the President of the Provisional Government of Calliana, while Wiker was named Acting Secretary of the Army and tasked with tying up the revolution's loose ends, of which there were many, not least of which were royalist holdouts or prisoners of war. Hylander, for all his skill as a revolutionary leader, struggled to organize the post-revolutionary government. Promised reforms were bogged down in the Convention as various factions that had once been united by a common enemy, Carl IV, descended into bitter infighting. The lower-classes clamoured for land and labour reform, while liberal aristocrats and business owners fought bitterly to prevent the appropriations of their land and wealth. Rebellions against the Provisional Government began to spring up across the country - the late King's cousin, Folke, had declared himself declared himself Emperor of the Northwest and lead a series of uprisings near the Borealian border, while Wiker's former ally, Amon Chicago, had led an agrarian revolt in the low mountains.

As chief of the armed forces, Wiker was called to suppress the uprisings, although he bitterly protested meeting Chicago with force, claiming that the Innu's demands were almost entirely limited to promises of the Plan of Salza, proposing instead a compromise with the Urfolk while the monarchists in the north were dealt with. According to a story recount by Osland, when Hylander asked the General if he'd "really strike a deal with an enemy of the state[Chicago]?" Wiker responded, "I'm just surprised you haven't appointed him to your cabinet". He found an unlikely ally in Gyldenlove, who, like Wiker, had been disappointed by Hylander's lack of meaningful reform. The two proposed the new Plan of Brenna which would disband the Convention to realize the promises of the revolution. The plan was supported by radicals within the Democratic League but was unsurprisingly lambasted by the rest of the Convention, including Borja, and Wiker's old friend, Osland, Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of the Judiciary respectively. Since the end of the war, Wiker and Osland had suffered a bitter falling out, both claiming to best represent the ideals of Hylander's revolution. In reality, Hylander favoured Osland and refused to adopt the same authoritarian measures that had kept King Carl in place for so long. Tragically, he would not live long enough to see his new Republic fully form, as he was assassinated by agents working for Folke on March 10th, 2015.

Wiker was able to leverage his position as the head of the army to name himself Provisional Leader, an act many decried as a silent coup. Frustrated with the inefficiency of the Convention Wiker began to adopt authoritarian measures; cracking down on counter-revolutionary press and expelling prominent opposition figures from positions of power, including Osland and Borja. He was able to negotiate peace with the southern rebels by launching the Plan of Brenna, winning him the support of the Callianan lower class. He was still opposed by Osland's Republican Faction - mostly moderate socialists and social democrats - and Borja's Conventioneers - liberal and conservative republicans. The three engaged in a bitter staring contest that lasted until April 21st when the Borja attempted a coup d'etat with American aid. The coup failed, thanks to Wiker's ability to rally public support, and Osland - who was more fearful of foreign-backed military interventions than of Wiker - supporting his old friend one last time. The coup did present Wiker with a pretence to disband the Convention - creating the People's Consultative Assembly in its place and purging right-wing parties. He also disbanded the Democratic League, believing it had become plagued by factionalism, and instead organized the National Revolutionary Party.

Thomas Wiker's Inauguration in
Brenna, May 16th, 2015

In the aftermath of Borja's failed coup, Wiker's public support skyrocketed - uniting the country against the threat of American military intervention. Borja was able to flee the country before he could be brought to justice, although hundreds of his supporters were executed for crimes against the republic, thousands more were arrested, and the parties of the Conventioneer Alliance were forcibly disbanded. The new republic saw its first national elections on May 10th, 2015, although by then any meaningful opposition to Wiker's regime had been destroyed. Although foreign observers were critical of the results, Wiker was able to beat Osland and his Socialist Republican Union in a landslide victory, becoming the first President of the National Republic of Calliana. He was sworn into office not a weak later and set about fulfilling the reforms Hylander had promised before the revolution - implementing the Plan of Brenna. The only way to do so, he believed, was to completely transform Hylander's federal parliamentary democracy into a centralized republic with a robust presidency. With the passing of amendments to Hylander's 2015 Constitution, Wiker stripped the Consultative Assembly of much of its power, while at the same time vesting authoritarian powers behind the office of the president. During his inaugural address, he defined the driving principle of his government to be "Lindian Republicanism" (named for the 19th Century Callianan revolutionary and founder of the First Republic, Marius Lind).

  • Economic Reform and Nationalization
Envisioning a Callianan-style socialist society, the National Revolutionary Party nationalized Calliana's vital industries including telecommunications, plumbing, electricity, and transportation; establishing the Callianan People's Bank and Department of the National Economy to oversee state-owned industries. To redistribute Calliana's natural wealth, the Calli mining, oil and gas, and forestry industries were also nationalized, while swathes of farmland were expropriated from wealthy landowners and foreigners and redistributed it amongst the poverty-stricken, mostly indigenous labourers. Wiker's regime would, however, maintain the framework of a market economy as a temporary expedient to ease the transition towards socialism. Private individuals in industries deemed non-essential were permitted to own small enterprises, although even these were heavily influenced by the state and forced to contend with sweeping labour reforms; the newly-instated 40-hour-work week, elements of industrial democracy, and a pay increase for labourers. His system has been varyingly described as market socialism by supporters and state capitalist by critics, but been praised for reducing Calliana's economic inequality.

  • Public Works and Infrastructure
Calliana's aged infrastructure was brought to light as part of the national campaign to rebuild after the revolutionary war. The National Recovery Administration was established to organize and fund public works projects from modernizing housing, automating factories, and building airports, hospitals, schools, roads, and commuter rail lines. This not only addressed Calliana's need for modern infrastructure and public services, be it accessible health care and education, but also helped reduce unemployment from 14.8% in 2010 before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, to 3.9% in 2020. In 2018, the National Recovery Administration began construction of the nation's first high-speed rail meant to connect the nations major cities. The first passenger trains arrived in Brenna from Kristianasbeg on January 1st, 2020, while construction on the Forsa and Salza lines remain in progress. Once completed, the Trans-Calliana Rail will serve as a part of Calliana's efforts to reduce the national carbon footprint, along with the construction of solar, wind, and hydroelectric power-plants which aim to completely replace natural gas by 2050.

  • Social Policy and Reform
Improving the status of women and ethnic minorities were two of Wiker's explicit goals. In 2015, he coined the phrase "100 nations under 1 flag" to refer to the situation in Calliana, referencing the number of tribes and cultural groups that exist within Calliana's borders and ending the Jarlsberg's practice of "Ethnic assimilation" under the majority Calli people. As an ethnic Kopman (otherwise known as Black Calli - a member of an itinerant Ameri-Norse people, historically from the Black River Valley), Wiker has promoted multiculturalism and the need for harmony between the white Ameri-Norse peoples and indigenous Urfolk. He appointed a number of Urfolk to government posts, including cabinet positions. He also encouraged women to pursue employment and education; promoting the use of contraceptives, allocating grants for new parents, and increasing public funding for day-care and primary education to provide women with the time to study and work. Wiker's government also legalized gay marriage, gender transition and sex-reassignment operations.

  • Aggressive Isolationism and Foreign Policy
During a speech before the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, Wiker called for an "international united front against imperialism..." and has since put forward a number of attempts to increase Calliana's global influence and promote national self-determination, anti-imperialism and anti-globalism. His nationalist views have manifested as aggressive and assertive policies, particularly meant to counter American and British influence in the north. Relations with the United States and the United Kingdom have rapidly deteriorated since 2015, made worse by the nationalization of property owned by American shareholders in Calliana, and the discovery of plots supported by British and American agents to remove Wiker from power. As a security net against Calliana's neighbours, Wiker has pursued closer relations with the People's Republic of China and Soviet Russia. The crowning achievement of his foreign policy has been the improvement of relations between Calliana and Non-Aligned nations such as Colombia, Indonesia, Korea, Nigeria and Persia. In 2016, with the help of his Vice-President Casper Gyldenlove, Wiker lead Calliana's efforts to join the Non-Aligned Movement.

  • Military Buildup and Reform
To deal with both the ever-present threat of foreign military intervention and the internal chaos of post-revolutionary Calliana, Wiker reorganized the National Revolutionary Army into the Callianan National Army to defend the Republic's borders, and the Revolutionary Guards to deal with internal threats. Universal conscription was enacted into law, while the Callianan arms industry grew rapidly, producing small arms as well as larger military infrastructure, warplane, and warships. In 2017 it was revealed the Calliana had begun to invest in a nuclear program - a revelation that led to the outbreak of the Christmas War between Calliana and Borealia, although the Borealians failed in their objective to remove Wiker from power. The Callianan National Army, lead by Rosa Thorson, did manage to enforce minor territorial claims against the Borealians near the Red River, proving effective in their first proper engagement, and helping establish Calliana's international prestige. Since 2015, the Revolutionary Guards, lead by Leon Bergman, have been engaged in a counter-insurgency against Folke's loyalists in the far-north.

  • Censorship and Propaganda
Propaganda has been an important tool for Republican Calliana since Gunnar Hylander established the National Republican Committee for Propaganda in 2010. The organization was briefly disbanded under the provisional government but was reborn after Wiker's ascension to the Presidency as the Department of Popular Culture and Information, and endowed with a broader range of powers from producing propaganda to censoring opposition press. The Department of Popular Culture has come to exercise control over most of Calliana's television and radio stations, print publishing industry, and monitors internet activity. The Department tightly monitors criticisms of the regime in whatever forms they emerge and generally silences negative depictions of the government, as are works deemed disrespectful towards Callianan culture and values.

Personal Life

Family and Friends

Thomas Wiker currently resides in Brenna, along with his wife, Eliza Bernstein, who has long served one of Wiker's closest political advisors. The two have no children, though Wiker is the godson to his nephew, AntonDalin-Paulsson. He remains close to his youngest sister, Carina, who has worked as his Private Secretary since 2015. Sanna, on the other hand, remained out of the public spotlight for most of Wiker's political career, although it is known that at some point during the Revolutionary War she fled the country for the United States. His stepfather, Jon, and Lily separated in 2005. He ultimately developed liver cancer and died in 2009 at the age of 51. It is known that Wiker visited him in the hospital the day of his passing and spoke with him at length, although what was said remains unknown. Aside from blood relatives, his closest friends include his long-time companion and Secretary of War Leon Bergman. He is known to be less fond of his main political opponent, Eric Osland, who currently heads Calliana's domestic opposition, despite holding a certain degree of respect for the man.

During his rare moments of free time, Wiker often spends time outdoors to clear his head. He is also fairly decent ice skater, and is a fanatical hockey fan, and maintains an interest in boxing from his younger years. A less productive activity of Wiker's is chain-smoking, and it is not uncommon to see him with a cigarette in his mouth. He is said to enjoy the company of ordinary Callianans and dedicates time to meet with citizens, talk and answer questions when he goes out in public. His attitude towards the public can perhaps best be described as paternalistic, and he views the people of Calliana as if they were all a part of an extended family. Despite all this, it is perhaps most common to see Wiker locked in his office pouring over a pile of books. Despite his commitment to working around the clock, he is not particularly organized, and his desk is almost always cluttered with papers, pens, open books and empty cups of coffee. He has a tendency to get lost in his own thoughts, and can quickly become distracted and go off on long tangents, which contributes to the long hours he spends writing.

Public Image and Style

Known by many of his supporters as "Black Fox" for his reputation as a cunning strategist and aggressive guerrilla tactics, much of Wiker's public persona revolves around his image as a hero of the revolution. It is not uncommon for Wicker to appear in public wearing the uniform of a Field Marshal, consisting of an olive green tunic, brown overcoat and a black cap. However, he still prefers to will dress less extravagantly and more comfortably in a dark brown, worn, tweed three-piece suit, especially during everyday functions, trips abroad and state meetings. It is also not uncommon to see him with his M1911 pistol in a holster on his belt. As a fan of firearms, he is known to still possess the Type 56 rifle he used during the Revolutionary War, and can often be seen at local gun ranges. Aside from his weapons, however, his accommodations at home are said to be rather spartan. Publicly, Wiker is a Roman Catholic and adheres to the philosophy of liberation theology. Is not uncommon to see him at St. Romund's Cathedral in Brenna for mass, although many question his true commitments to the church.

Despite his grandiose image, Wiker is well known for his rather austere lifestyle. His home in Brenna is home to very few significant valuables aside from his book collection, guitar, guns, an old television, second-hand furniture and old appliances, and his living quarters have been described by visitors as barren and desolate. His reputation as a war hero combined with his modest lifestyle and genuine demeanour have earned Wiker a considerable amount of public support, particularly among the Callianan working class, students, and former peasants. Most government buildings do not permit statues or works of art to display his image on their premises, and it is illegal to name locations or institutions after him.
