Revolutionary War

Thomas Gunbiorn Carl Wiker (Born: April 6th, 1983) is an American born Callianan writer, political theorist, socialist revolutionary, general and statesman, currently serving as the 1st President of the Confederative Republic of Calliana, and Technical Secretary of the Socialist-Democratic Party of Calliana. He was previously a prominent figure within the Callianan Republican movement during the early to mid-2000s, the Supreme Commander of the National Revolutionary "Black" Army during the Callianan Revolutionary War, and was a member of the Callianan Republican Congress in 2010.

Wiker's rule has been defined by his commitments to social justice and workers' rights, crackdown on corruption and modernization efforts, along with his push to transform Calliana into a socialist republic, with a heavy emphasis placed on industrial democracy, self-management and market socialism. He is also recognized as a unifying figure between the White Calli people and Natives, having encouraged multiculturalism and racial tolerance since coming to office. Wiker is well known for his aggressive foreign policy, guided by anti-imperialist and leftist nationalist sentiments, greatly increasing Calliana's international prestige. Many of his detractors have criticized Wiker for his more authoritarian tendencies and strongman persona, although he still enjoys popular support across most of Calliana and is seen as a national icon. Often described as the father of the Second Callianan Republic, Wiker is credited with having developed the political theory known as republican socialism.

Early Life
Thomas Wiker was born in Queens, New York, on April 6th, 1983; the first child of a 19-year-old Callianan immigrant and aspiring actress, Matilda Wiker. Thomas' father is believed to have been a 49-year-old talent agent Henry White, although White would adamantly deny paternity, leaving Matilda to raise Thomas on her own. Struggling to find work in New York and raise her young son, Matilda moved Thomas and herself back home to her native Calliana in the summer of 1985 and settled in the city of Forsa. This, however, did not prove to be the ideal location to raise a child either. Forsa was a major industrial center a port city near Eric's Bay well known for its high poverty rates and sprawling slums. The poor neighbourhoods in which Thomas spent many of his early years were considered to be some of the most dangerous in the world, controlled by gangs, politically backed militias and cartels. Matilda soon took up work as a maid upon settling in the city, although many believe she also often resorted to prostitution in order to earn more money.

Matilda married Krister Mauseth, a local warehouse worker in 1986, and soon gave birth to Thomas' two half-sisters: Ellinor, who was born in 1986, and Carina, who was born in 1992. Krister, who struggled with alcoholism and substance abuse for the majority of his adult life was anything but a caring father and regularly abused his young children and wife. Thomas often took the brunt of the abuse, as he would attempt to step between his step-father and his sisters. Even as a young child, he was described as displaying strong sympathies for the poor and powerless, and developed a strong desire to raise his family out of their state poverty. Krister was ultimately arrested in 1998 on assault charges and sentenced to lengthy stay in prison, freeing the family from his tyranny, at least for a moment.

Wiker began attending St. Ville's Academy, a Catholic Boys School in Forsa in the early 90s where he fell victim to the many dangers of Forsa's streets. He began using drugs and alcohol as a young teenager and experienced a number of run-ins with the law. He was teased at school for his mixed American-Calli heritage, as well as his mothers less than wholesome career choices, although he was anything but an easy target for bullies. Wiker was hot-headed and stubborn and would stand his ground no matter the odds stacked against him, winding up in trouble after countless fights at school and on the streets. Despite his reputation as a typical inner-city delinquent, his teachers took notice of his intelligence and enormous potential. He was encouraged by many of the schools' staff to dedicate more time to his studies, and under the guidance of one of his favourite instructors, the young man demonstrated an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He had long possessed an interest in politics, philosophy, science and psychology, and ultimately took up small part-time jobs to save up money which he spent on books. By his late teens, he had built a respectable collection, with some of his favourite writers being Sigmund Freud, Jack London, Friedrich Nietzsche, Franz Kafka and Bertrand Russell, while keeping his own journals in which he wrote about ideas he discovered in readings, or simply found interesting. He was also encouraged to transform his hot-head into something more productive, and ultimately joined the school's boxing team. He was regarded as an exceptional fighter, and in his final year of school he won a gold medal in regional youth championships, earning himself a meagre reputation as a local hero. Graduating at the top of his class in 2001, he was awarded a scholarship to the University of Forsa.

Early Political Career

In 2001, Thomas Wiker began attending the University of Forsa were he studied sociology. However, his situation still appeared bleak, as his family struggled to make ends meet. Wiker struggled to keep up with his studies as he took up part-time jobs to send money back to his mother and younger sisters. Perhaps inevitably, Wiker would find himself caught up in the socialist and republican currents that ran wild within the historically radical university. After Calliana was hit by a devastating financial downturn in the early 2000s Wiker became embroiled in student activism and grew increasingly critical of Calliana's King, Olav IV, who had been involved in a number of scandals involving abuses of power, repression of republican and social activism, corruption and misappropriations of public money. He was well known for his lavish lifestyle and expensive taste, despite the fact that almost half of all Callianans lived in a state of poverty. Even after the Callianan economy took a nosedive in the early 2000s, the King and many oligarchs maintained this opulent life, while the government undertook austerity measures to help rebuild the economy. Many government-owned corporations were privatized and bought by American corporations, all of which Wiker found exceptionally egregious. Spurred by anti-capitalist and nationalist sentiments Wiker eventually joined the Labourist Party of Calliana, a socialist group founded in 1910.

Wiker was a small and unexceptional looking young man but demonstrated his natural born gifts as a writer and orator, mesmerizing crowds with his speeches and captivating readers with articles he managed to publish in student newspapers at the University of Forsa. Party leaders took notice of his skill, and not long after gaining the Party he became a recruiter and community organizer for the Labourist Party. He would attend socialist and republican discussion groups at his school to attract potential recruits for the Party. It was in one of these groups he would meet two young men who would go on to influence him for the remainder of his life: Benjamin Stormo and Max Ljung, both members of the militant socialist club known as the Iron Guards. While he maintained a close relationship with the young men, Wiker held the belief that lasting change could be achieved through the apparatus of the system and through peaceful activism. This would change when police raided his apartment in 2002 while Ljung was visiting, supposedly having been tipped off about illegal weapons being held on the premises. Ljung raised his hands in surrender, only to be shot by police who claimed Ljung's actions where threatened. After no weapons were found, Wiker himself was arrested, accused of having had a homosexual relationship with Ljung, and sentenced to six months in prison. When he was released, he was appalled by the Labourist Parties inaction and felt betrayed by the organization to which he had dedicated so much time and effort. Bitter over the loss of his close friend, he was easily convinced by Stormo to join the Iron Guards.

With the Iron Guards Wiker's talents were quickly put to use. He was so good at swaying people to his cause he was named Chairman of the Forsa Committee of the Iron Guards in 2005, and the organization's membership exploded during his tenure. The men and women under his leadership were disciplined, despite Iron Guards in the past having a reputation of being thugs, petty criminals, and unorganized rioters. Wiker held a vision for a new Iron Guards - that being a strictly organized militia. After all, at the time in Calliana labour activists and republican protesters were being harassed, beaten, and killed by police and state backs terrorist groups. The only way to deal with such threats, Wiker believed, was to meet them with an organized front of armed, working-class Callianans. Along with combat training, Wiker also placed considerable emphasis on political education for his recruits. Wiker himself had taken a shining to the teaches of Karl Marx while in university, as well as those of Lenin, Che Guevara, Daniel De Leon, and the leader of the First Callianan Republic Rikard Lind, and sought to promote such views to his comrades. To attract more recruits, Wiker's Iron Guards opened soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and educational centers across Forsa, a practice which would later be mirrored by Iron Guard Chapters across Calliana. He also appeared at bars, pool halls, and school campuses in working-class neighbourhoods to speak directly to Callianan workers and preach his philosophy. As the Guards began offering protection for labour leaders and encouraged workers' to organize, trades unions became more and more prevalent as the Callianan proletariat began to feel as though they truly had the power to demand change.

However, for the most part, his family life had begun to fall apart around him. As the Iron Guards became increasingly influential, the police and gangs became aware of Wiker's activities and fearful of the power he wielded. He was the target of numerous assassination attempts and his family regularly received threats from gangs, including the American and Irish Mafias - two powerful underground organizations in Calliana which had had their status questioned by the Iron Guards, as well as members of the far-right monarchist militia known as the Black Hand. Wiker and his sister Ellinor were particularly hostile to one another, with Ellinor often blaming Thomas for the grief he had put their family through. However, it was Matilda Wiker, their mother, who managed to hold the family together. Despite the hardships, she had been through in her life she always remained positive and optimistic, and incredibly supportive of her children. Thomas would find her beaten and stabbed to death in her apartment on April 2nd, 2006. After a short investigation, the police ruled her death to be the result of a robbery gone wrong, although her children were quick to point their fingers at royalist thugs. The murder of Matilda effectively put an end to Thomas and Ellinor's relationship, and after their mother's funeral, the two would never be seen together in public again. Carina, however, remained close to her elder brother, and as she was still a teenager at the time of her mother's death, Thomas became her legal guardian. Of course, the Guards were a largely underground and clandestine organization and partook in a number of illegal activities. Wiker himself was linked to numerous shootings, street fights, and bank heists, and was largely suspected to have run protection rackets, although he managed to evade arrest.

Wiker (top row, third from left) and Iron Guards,
circa 2007
While attending a talk at the University of Forsa in 2007, he met a nobleman turned republican activist, Casper Gyldenlove, an older man who had long been a member of the Callianan Socialist Party. Wiker and Gyldenlove initially disagreed with one another, with Gyldenlove's democratic and pacifist views contrasting with Wiker's more radical socialist outlook, and even after the talk Wiker and Gyldenlove found themselves deep in debate. Despite their differences, the two maintained a correspondence even after parting at the talk, and would eventually become good friends. The two would often exchange notes and pamphlets they were writing for the other to edit and comb for errors, and as the months turned to years Gyldenlove evolved into something of a mentor to the young Wiker. In 2008, Gyldenlove saw fit to introduce Thomas to another republican orator, Gunnar Hylander, to whom Thomas took an instantaneous liking. The former Labourist Party member had risen to prominence as a radical republican and populist and had become the face of the Republican Movement during the late 2000s. In 2008, Hylander founded the People's Revolutionary Party, which Wiker was quick to join. He proved himself to be a valuable member of the Party by convincing many of his Iron Guard comrades to join the PRP, and was ultimately given a spot on the Party's Forsa Organizing Committee. While working with the PRP Wiker forged a friendship with one of Hylander's advisers and chief propagandists, a young Anglo-Callianan girl named Johanna Barron. By 2009, the two had fallen in love and began dating.

Callianan Revolution

In 2009, Wiker earned a PhD in Sociology, with a dissertation titled Comparing the Evolution of the State in Scandinavian and Calli Society before 1497. Having left school, he could focus his full attention on the activities of the Iron Guards. On Black Friday, 2009, government forces opened fire on an unarmed crowd of protesters, killing over 250 people, wounding almost 500, and arresting over 1,000. What followed was a period of catastrophic unrest that would ultimately lead to the Revolution. The wave of unrest hit Forsa particularly hard, with riots, industrial strikes and looting dominating the city's streets. Wiker could see war on the horizon, and convened with officers of the Forsa Iron Guards to plan for an inevitable conflict, funneling weapons into the country from neighbouring Borealia and the United States.

On May Day, 2010, King Olav declared martial law, and the revolution of which Wiker had dreamed had finally come. Using the Iron Guards, he was able to swiftly disarm the local police, many of whom were already sympathetic to their cause, and began to battle federal troops in fast urban combat. Countless Iron Guards were killed, but by the end of the month most of the city had been liberated as Olav's loyalist forces were forced to flee, unable to contest with both Protesters and the Iron Guards. As the nation descended into anarchy around him Wiker converged with Republican leaders in Forsa's town hall, and under the leadership of Gunnar Hylander formed the Callianan Republican Congress. The Congress was officially formed on April 15th and declared themselves to be the legitimate government of Calliana. This Congress was dominated by the PRP, which was considered to follow left-wing populist doctrine, but also had members from the Communist Party, Socialist Party, Native Socialists and Labourist Party, as well as the right-wing People's Justice Party, dissidents from the National Liberal Party and the Constitutionalist Party. With royalist troops marching on the city, the Republican Congress was quick to adopt the Iron Guards as their own and set about transforming the militia into a regular army. This would give birth to the National Revolutionary Forces, otherwise known as the "Black Army", a rather meager but fanatical military. Largely lacking experienced soldiers, the vast majority of of the Black Army's officer corps was likewise pulled from the Iron Guards upper echelons, and Wiker's position and history made him a natural candidate. In early May he was awarded the rank of Brigadier, and charged with the command of the XII Mounted Brigade of the 1st Army of Volunteers.

In the summer of 2010 Wiker would be sent to the front lines for the first time to reinforce republican troops under the command of revolutionary general Marcus Osland, who had been overrun by Royalist "Blue Army". Wiker successfully rescued Osland, who had been captured and tortured by Royalists, although he quickly developed suspicions about the man. He disliked the fact that Osland had previously worked with the King's Secret Police, and recommended he be retired, citing psychological trauma he'd experienced while in captivity. The advice has ignored by higher ups, and as the war continued Wiker and Osland grew to view one another as rivals rather than allies. Wiker often dismissed Osland as a mere glory hound, with little concern for the future of Calliana or the men and women in his charge. Osland, on the other hand, often compared Wiker to a Commissar for allegedly putting politics ahead of sensible military tactics. Regardless, as a commanding officer with the 1st Army of Volunteers until the summer of 2012, Wiker lead a massively successful a campaign across southwestern Calliana and secured a number of key cities including Orhammer, Falkenhall, and Winterfort while fighting the Callianan Royal Army and American Volunteer Battalions. He was well known for his aggressive tactics and frightening ability as a guerrilla, allowing him to advance quickly within the first two years of the war. By 2011, many had taken to calling him the Lion of the Northwest, although perhaps just as famous as his skill on the battlefield was his chivalry. He displayed considerable amounts of respect for captured Blue Army soldiers and often rescued wounded enemy combatants to be treated in republican field hospitals. Among his own men he proved to be a strict disciplinarian, although he quickly adopted a paternalistic view of the men and women under his command and forged a strong sense of comradery among them. He enjoyed the company of his men during breaks between engagements and commanded respect for his ability during combat, and "no man left behind" policy.

Republicans assault the Royal Palace in Varden
By September of 2012, most of western Calliana had been liberated, while the east remained under the King's control. For his conduct over the past two years and skill as a guerrilla strategist, Wiker was named Supreme Commander of the Black Army by Congress. This proved to worsen the rivalry Wiker had with Osland, who had been vying for the position of Supreme Commander since the death of the previous holder, Leon Forsman. Osland would later claim that Wiker's promotion had been nothing more than a political appointment, but regardless, Wiker embarked on the daunting task of liberating the east from Blue Army control. Supported by both industrial workers in urban centers and poorer agrarian peasants, Wiker was able to advance with frightening speed into the east, winning crucial victories and finally crippling the King's forces during the Battle of Fort Churchill and capturing the Blue Army's Field Marshal Gustav Helsing. During the summer of 2014, republican revolutionaries began their siege of the Varden, having liberated most of the east from royalist control. King Olav had few remaining supporters to defend him, and with only a handful of soldiers to protect his Palace he chose to flee. He was captured on New Years Day 2015 while attempting to use the city's sewers to escape. King Olav was summarily executed by Republican soldiers, and the remaining Royalists surrendered swiftly after. With the war now over, Wiker would propose to Barron, and the two would be married on January 10th, 2015 in St. Kadal's Cathedral.

Presidency

Wiker addresses Congress for the first time
On January 18th, 2015, Gunnar Hylander was assassinated by agents working for the Black Hand, resulting in something of a succession crisis as varying factions fought for power. Wiker himself was nominated to fill the role of Provisional President of the Republic of Calliana by Casper Gyldenlove, and with the support of an increasing number of radicals, managed to wrestle power away from more liberal moderate politicians. As the acting head of state and head of government, the role of building the Calliana Republic fell upon the 31-year-old Wiker who quickly threw himself headlong at the task. With members of the Republican Congress, as well as revolutionaries from the east, he organized the Congress of People's Deputies in the shell of the King's former palace. The Congress was unquestionably dominated by the People's Revolutionary Party, although cracks had begun to form in the group. Gunnar Hylander's passing had presented the PRP with a problem, largely due to the fact that while he had been an outspoken proponent of a revolutionary overthrow of the monarchy and vaguely leftist rhetoric, he had laid few plans for the post-revolutionary government.

Now in control of the Party, Wiker would take a far more radical stance to the reconstruction of Calliana, with plans for mass collectivization and radical socialist policies, known by his supporters as the "Forsa Programme". However, initially his support from the Party's base was shaky to say the least. He was popular among the Callianan lower-classes, although many of those in positions of leadership had taken a disliking to his radical positions and stubborn refusal to abandon his principles. Ultimately, on February 14th, less than a month into his term as Provisional President, a coup was staged by right-wing members of the Congress. It was swiftly suppressed, thanks in part to Wiker's remaining influence over the Army, and the combined efforts of Benjamin Stormo and Marcus Osland, who had been made Secretary of War and Secretary of State Security respectively by Hylander before his death. Wiker responded by expelling numerous right-wing parties from the Congress, including the Constitutionalist Party, Dissident Liberals, and People's Justice Party, and arrested the leaders of the coup. Osland and Wiker, despite working together to put down the coup, regularly butted heads on numerous issues - Wiker being a progressive minded socialist, while Osland advocated conservative values and a mixed economy. Wiker dismissed Osland's vision for the future of Calliana as nothing less than a betrayal of the revolution, but out of respect for Osland's loyalty during the coup took a number of steps back in his campaign against internal dissent, permitting Osland and other less radical opposition members to remain in Congress. Overtime the Forsa Programme grew in popularity, although Osland's supporters proved to be just as stubborn as Wiker, and refused to give in easily. Recognizing that the PRP was falling apart Wiker would formally dissolve the party on March 8th, 2015, ultimately establishing his own, the Socialist-Democratic Party. Osland alternatively founded the Nationalist Union for the New Republic. When elections were held in 2015, the Democrats and Nationalists unsurprisingly found themselves ahead of the pack, with the Democrats going on to hold a super-majority and forming the government, and the Nationalists making up the Official Opposition. After the election, Wiker would be sworn in as President of the Confederative Republic of Calliana on May 16th, 2015, after being appointed by the Congress of People's Deputies.

Domestic Policy

Since coming to power in 2015, Thomas Wiker has attempted to create a Marxist programme independent of the Marxist-Leninist regimes in Europe and Asia, and as such has adopted what many have described Republican Socialism or Thomas Wiker Thought; commonly considered to be a branch of Neo-Marxism. As a part of his programme, Wiker has sought to strengthen regional governments, through the creation of directly elected local councils meant to handle to administrative functions of various states and communities. This has arisen in direct response to a historic trend of Calli dominance over ethnic minorities (particularly over Callianan Natives) and the suppression of native culture. With the implementation of policies loosely based around the idea of ethnofederalism, the various regions of Calliana (known simply as Republics after the war) were granted quasi-autonomous status, and charged with managing their local affairs, while the federal government would manage issues of national importance, such as the military, foreign affairs and banks. Coupled with this has been the "3 Nations under 1 Flag" policy which has actively sought to promote cooperation, tolerance, and a sense of brotherhood between the Calli, Natives and Inuit, and Anglo-Callianans, which make up the largest ethnic groups within the country. The federal government has actively sought to crush ethnic-nationalist movements, both white and native, instead emphasizing unity between ethnic groups and promoting a greater class and national identity. The federal government maintains what can be described as a guiding role, upholding the Constitution of 2015 which binds individual regional Republics to contribute to the "Socialist Revolution".

Thomas Wiker has also pushed a socially progressive platform, rolling back a number of socially conservative policies held up by the Monarchy before the war. The Catholic Church, which had once been immensely influential in Calliana, was entirely stripped of its political status, and state secularism was adopted. Anti-discrimination laws were implemented, outlawing discrimination on the basis of ethnic background, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity when hiring for a job or enrolling for school. Universal healthcare was adopted, and school tuition fees were essentially ended. He also created jobs programs for students seeking to enter trades. Same-sex marriage was legalized for the first time in Callianan history in 2015, and the rights of those in the LGBTQ+ community received broader recognition. Women and transgender individuals were also allowed to serve in military combat roles, something they had not been permitted to do under the Monarchy. This step came hand in hand with bills introducing universal conscription for all able bodied adults. Conscription has proven to be only one step in a larger military buildup, meant to combat threats both at home and abroad. Even after the end of the Revolutionary War, monarchist sympathies persist in small pockets, such as with the terrorist group known as the Black Hand, and have been met with an increasingly energetic government crackdown. In the years following the war, numerous prominent royalist statesmen, nobles, and military figures were arrested for war crimes and corruption, many of whom were later sentenced to internal exile, lengthy prison sentences, and often execution. Anti-communists in the civilian realm have also faced backlash from the government since the end of the war, although to an arguably less extreme extent. While the government has encouraged discussion surrounding its policies among the citizenry, this has largely been limited to those on the political left, with many accusing the state of censoring right-wing media and blacklisting certain individuals on the political right.

Economic Policy

Thomas Wiker's economic model has pursued a combination of state and collectively owned industry within the framework of a market socialist system. Property owned by foreigners, the former nobility and wealthy Callianans was seized, and placed under the collective control of local workers, while former peasants were granted title deeds as large land holdings were broken up. Large scale nationalization occurred within industries deemed essential, including gas, telecommunications, transportation, water and plumbing services, banks as well as many others, although for the most part these still operate with a considerable degree of industrial democracy and worker-self management. The oil and mining industries were also nationalized, although due to environmentalist commitments Wiker has begun to scale back such operations, and provide subsidies towards the green energy and technology industry. Within a year, Wiker's regime had redistributed considerable amounts of Calliana's wealth to the working class, and he declared his government to be a dictatorship of the proletariat. Under his rule, both homelessness and unemployment have dropped drastically due to large scale public works projects.

Foreign Policy

Wiker is perhaps best known abroad for his aggressive foreign policy, largely meant to counteract American influence, but also as a product of Calliana's long standing rivalry with Borealia and the Great Britain. He found himself in hot water during the early days of his Presidency after nationalizing several mines and oil drilling sights owned by American corporations, and made international headlines at his refusal to back down in the face of increasingly belligerent United States, which he extensively criticized for acting out of the interests of corporations such as Exxon Mobil and Anglo-American rather than in the interests of its own people. In 2019, Calliana fought a series of short border conflicts with Borealia, which many viewed as a proxy-conflict between Calliana and the US. Wiker made a number of state visits to the United States; once in 2015 to meet with President Amon Akomo, and then twice more in 2017 and 2019 to meet with President Robert Dunn, both of whom he would later take a disliking too. After conflicts with Borealia in 2019 relations between Calliana and its southern neighbour have effectively been non-existent, and Wiker maintains his vision of turning Calliana into a bulwark against the United States.

During a speech before the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, Wiker called for a "International united front against imperialism..." and has since put forward a number of attempts to increase Calliana's global influence and promote national self-determination and anti-globalism. Calliana has moved increasingly closer to China and the Soviets, and has also made close bonds with smaller nations across Latin America including Cuba, Mexico, Bolivia and Colombia, notably being particularly close to Colombian President Sofia Santángel. Recently, President Wiker hosted a summit with Korean Leader Kim Jin-Hwan in Pyongyang. In terms of international socialism, Wiker has made a number of attempts to support international leftist movements, but ultimately holds the belief that the pursuit of socialism must be tailored to the conditions and needs of individual nations and cultures. Despite increasingly warm relations with the east, this particular policy has driven something of a wedge between Calliana and her Soviet and Chinese allies, with many pointing to Wiker as a new source of third-worldist thought. In 2017, Calliana was official inducted into the Non-Aligned Movement.

Personal Life

Family and Friends

Thomas Wiker currently resides in a modest estate in Varden, along with his wife, Johanna Barron. The two are described as being incredibly close, and Wiker commonly appears publicly with his wife by his side. Barron has long served one of Wiker's closest confidants and currently serves as both the President's Senior Counselor and as a member of the Council of State. In 2019, Barron gave birth to Viktoria Wiker, the couples first, and to date, only child. He remains close to his youngest sister, Carina, who has worked as his personal secretary since 2015. Ellinor remained out of the public spotlight for most of Wiker's political career, although it is known that at some point during the Revolutionary War she fled the country for the United States, where she currently resides. Henry White, his (alleged) biological father, still lives in New York, and at the age of 84 has never acknowledged Wiker as his son. If White is his father, that would mean that Wiker also has an older half-brother, Andrew, White's son from his first marriage who currently works as a lawyer in Brooklyn. Regardless, Thomas and Andrew have never met. His stepfather Krister was released from Prison in 2004 but divorced Matilda not long after. He ultimately developed liver cancer and died in 2009 at the age of 51. It is known that Wiker visited him in the hospital the day of his passing and spoke with him at length, although what was said remains unknown. Aside from blood relatives, his closest friends include Benjamin Stormo; his long time companion and secretary of defence, as well as his personal body guard, Keme Karlsson; an Algonquin man he met as an Iron Guard.

During his rare moments of free time, Wiker often spends time outdoors to clear his head: jogging through local parks accompanied by his dogs, going to local gun ranges, or just relaxing in local restaurants with a coffee or a beer. Wiker is a fairly decent ice skater, and is a fanatical hockey fan, and maintains an interest in boxing from his younger years. A less productive activity of Wiker's is chain smoking, and it is not uncommon to see him with a cigarette in his mouth. He is said to enjoy the company of ordinary Callianans and dedicates time to meet with citizens, talk and answer questions when he goes out in public. His attitude towards the public can perhaps best be described as paternalistic, and he views the people of Calliana as if they were all a part of an extended family. Despite all this, it is perhaps most common to see Wiker locked in his office pouring over a pile of books. Despite his commitment to working around the clock, he is not particularly organized, and his desk is almost always cluttered with papers, pens, open books and empty cups of coffee. He has a tendency to get lost in his own thoughts, and can quickly become distracted and go off on long tangents, which contributes to the long hours he spends writing.

Public Image and Style

Thomas Wiker's Uniform
Known by many of his supporters as the "Lion of the Northwest" for his conduct during the revolutionary war, much of Wiker's public persona revolves around his image as a military man. He commonly appears in public wearing the uniform of a Field Marshal, consisting of a grey tunic and pants, peaked cap and overcoat. On other occasions however, he will dress less extravagantly in an old, dark-brown three piece suit, especially during trips abroad and state meetings. It is also not uncommon to see him with his M1911 pistol in a holster on his belt. As a fan of firearms he is known to still possess the Type 56 rifle he used during the Revolutionary War, and can often be seen at local gun ranges. Aside from his weapons however, his accommodations at home are said to be rather spartan.

Despite his grandiose image Wiker is well known for his rather austere lifestyle. His home in Varden is home to very few significant valuables aside from his book collection, guitar, guns, an old television, second hand furniture and old appliances, and his living quarters have been described by visitors as barren and desolate. His reputation as a war hero combined with his modest lifestyle and genuine demeanor have earned Wiker a considerable amount of public support, particularly among the Callianan working class, students, and former peasants, although the Callianan state has made it a point to stifle the growth of a personality cult around Wiker's persona. Most government buildings do not permit statues or works of art to display his image on their premises, and it is illegal to name locations or institutions after him.
