The Republic of Biaten is a huge, cultured nation, ruled by Chancellor Heath with a fair hand, and remarkable for its daily referendums, complete lack of prisons, and ubiquitous missile silos. The compassionate, democratic population of 986 million Biatenians are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whomever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives.

The large, liberal government juggles the competing demands of Education, Welfare, and Healthcare. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Hachen. The average income tax rate is 80.5%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The frighteningly efficient Biatenian economy, worth 117 trillion Thalers a year, is fairly diversified and led by the Information Technology industry, with major contributions from Tourism, Book Publishing, and Cheese Exports. State-owned companies are common. Average income is an impressive 119,027 Thalers, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

There's a shortage of swinging hot spots as land development grinds to a halt, supermarket milk is a shear-thickening fluid that can stop small-caliber bullets, tourists call Biatenian beach towns "the fine coastline", and the news is showing footage of Chancellor Heath bullying an old man to the point of tears. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown. Biaten's national animal is the Lion, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.

Biaten is ranked 169,487th in the world and 127th in The Western Isles for Highest Unexpected Death Rate, scoring 20.43 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
