The Roswell Rift (1950)
Days after the massacre of Roswell, New Mexico a massive rift appears in the sky and can be seen above much of North America. The public fear of what is to come especially as conspiracy theorists dominate the radios cause riots across the world. Eventually, things settle down as the rift appears to be closing, but on May 7th, 1950 something horrid happens. In the early morning as people head into work in the states or partake in activities elsewhere in the globe a series of flashing lights stream from across the rift.

The Impact (1950)

May 7th, 1950 is known as the "day of impact" because of the fact the streaming lights which came from the Roswell Rift promptly hit several big cities, and other areas at once wiping them off the face of the planet. Millions died in less than an hour, and nations would be changed within a short span. The fires from the impact spread across the globe, and the chaos killed hundreds of thousands more over the days to come.

The Invasion (1950)

May 14th, 1950 a week later as the fires across the world died down, and nations breathed a sigh of relief intent on collecting, and burying the dead calm never came. Instead, the Roswell Rift spewed forth a great host of strange creatures, and beings who went on a warpath across the planet. Much of the planet would fall to them at least initially, and a great chunk of humanity would die, but ultimately their salvation would come from the stars.

The Relief Fleet (1951-1952)
A fleet cut off from the main force comprised of ten species in service to beings known as the overseers arrived on earth, and aided humanity in fighting off these invaders from the Rift.

The Frontlines (1952-1954)

The fleet, of course, was only a small force, but capable of dealing great damage, and completely stopping the offensive by the Rifters. For two years they helped humanity recover enough to bring the fight to their mysterious enemy. Ultimately they worked on a plan to destroy the very thing that brought their enemy into the world.

The Roswell Rift destroyed (1954)

With the plan put into action, the Roswell Rift had several high power bombs detonated at the entrance by a volunteer crew of humans, and the ten races of the mandate. The volunteers weren't seen again, but ultimately the rift collapsed in on itself and was sealed off preventing any further relief for the invading "rifters", and their army.

The Rifter's scatter (1954)

With their supply chain, and reinforcement route destroyed the rifters scatter across the globe to the areas they initially landed. These areas get turned into heavily fortified wastelands where very few humans dare to journey to except for great treasures.

The Aftermath (1954)

With half of humanity dead most thought, a global government approach would be appropriate, and many did, in fact, go for the idea. Especially considering most countries were reduced to the point of collapse or had fractured into dozens or more states fighting over territory once the rifters left.

Voluntary Unification (1954-1960)

At first, this new global government called the Human Representative Authority decided it wanted the membership to be voluntary. Of course, the membership process had the eventual requirements of breaking down nation states into various administrations while keeping up the facade of a global "voluntary" government. By 1960 it became apparent this approach wasn't working with less than a quarter of the planet under the administration of the HRA. Many just saw it as an inevitable failure and were waiting for humanity to slide back into tribalism, and for new nations to be forged again.
