Fall of the Federation and the Free Republic

The Federation of Barunia came to an end on the 31st March 2019, a day known as Black Sunday.
In the days leading up to Black Sunday, the following events led to the eventual demise of the Federation.

Friday, 22nd March
Barunia has been in a state of government limbo for the past month, as the two political houses are locked in an ideological stalemate. With the right-wing holding power in the legislative assembly, the left-wing majority of the People's Council has been voting against each proposal from the assembly as it reaches the Council. WIth no legislation being passed, and the process of government frozen, Prime Minister Oscar Kaiman made the decision to dissolve the Legislative Assembly.

Monday, 25th March
The Prime Minister did not get the 75% vote of the People's Council he needed to make the dissolution valid. With opinion in the People's Council swinging against the Prime Minister, the right-wing supporters in the People's Council called for a vote of no-confidence in Kaiman's leadership. With a combined vote from all houses of parliament, Kaiman was removed from the leadership. The Secretary General then appointed Astella David as the new Prime Minister.

Tuesday, 26th March
The Premier of Marion demanded that Ms David immediately call for elections to all the people to decide a new government. The Prime Minister declined, stating that she would serve the remainder of Kaiman's three year term. Marion's response was to threaten to withdraw from the Federation if Prime Minister David did not call an election within 24 hours

Wednesday, 27th March
The Government had declined to answer Marion's ultimatum, so Premier Johan Brightman issued a statement that Marion was seceding from the Federation of Barunia. Prime Minister David responded by naming Brightman a traitor and calling for his arrest.

Sunday, 31st March
With diplomatic approaches to bring Marion back to the Federation failing, and with Tildos releasing a statement of support for the new Independent State of Marion, Prime Minister David called a crisis meeting in Porthaven. There she stated that the union of states had fallen, and as such the Federation of Barunia, and by extension its constitution and government, were dissolved. She then declared herself President over the remainder of the country, and declared a state of emergency.
Marion responded by officially declaring war on this new republic.

These events led directly to the Barunian Civil War. With Republican forces occupying the state of Porthaven, and the Socialists on Marion Island, the war raged between the disputed territories of West Barunia and Tildos. The Northern Isles were largely unaffected by the fighting.

The focal point of the war was the West Barunian capital of Newland. Captured by Republican forces early during the conflict, the Socialists made a tough landing at Kaizo beach to fight their way back to the city. The Socialist force was a coalition of Barunian and International troops, mostly from the URN, including soldiers and equipment from Dakran, Free Terra, and Soviet Ruk-Tsan. Although infantry from both sides fought scattered battles across most of West Barunia, the majority of the Socialist force made their way straight to Newland. The battle for the city raged for three days, until finally the Republican forces were forced to withdraw back towards Porthaven.

Meanwhile, Socialist forces, mostly from Bugaria, had landed at Whitefeather bay on Tildos, and making their way to Delmars secured the city for the socialists, despite strong opposition from the Republicans in the area. Although the Republicans had superior forces on the island, they were forced to recall the troops to defend Porthaven, which was now under siege. Socialist troops had succeeded in fighting their way through to the state border, and were holding it. With the port o Newland secured, the Socialist navy launched a naval blockade of the Barrett Strait. With the tide turned, Republican leader Astella David called for a ceasefire, which was granted, and opened negotiations with the Socialists. The ceasefire was broken, but peace talks continued, and finally the Republicans surrendered.

After a struggle that had lasted one year and twenty-three days, President David surrendered on April the 22nd, 2020. According to the terms of the surrender, Astella David would be exiled from Barunia, however all other Republicans would be offered amnesty. The Socialist Federation of Barunia would replace the Free Republic.
