The Military of Antria

Antrian Military Doctrine:

”The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”
    Quote attributed to: [UNKNOWN SOURCE]

”Sometimes you have to pick the gun up to put the gun down.”
    Quote attributed to: [UNKNOWN SOURCE]

”We must never forget why we have, and why we need our military. Our armed forces exist solely to ensure our nation is safe, so that each and every one of us can sleep soundly at night, knowing we have guardians at the gate.”
    Quote attributed to: [UNKNOWN SOURCE]

The Antrian military is one that endeavors to balance both it's offensive and defensive capabilities, though it naturally excels in some areas more than others, and it is not without it's weaknesses as well. Considering the somewhat nomadic nature of the Antrian nation, an excellent logistics capability is one of the key points to the Antrian military which utilizes this capability with extreme expertise; commonly allowing Antrian forces to outlast enemy combatants; wearing them down before aiming for a decapitating strike. Modularity, and an array of simple and easy to maintain ships, small craft, vehicles, armor, and weapons are another facet of the Antrian military that comes into play here, as the ability to quickly adapt or repair units; even in the field in many cases, can usually allow the Antrian military to maintain effective fighting forces while their enemies struggle to keep up and steadily lose their combat effectiveness.

Major Components of Antrian Military Doctrine:
Dedicated and Highly Streamlined Logistics Capabilities
Modularity, Durability, and a Redundancy In Military Equipment and Technology
Combined Arms, Maneuver and Attrition Based Warfare, ECM and ECCM
A Limited Reliance On The Chain of Command [Soldiers Are Encouraged To Use Their Own Initiative]

Antrian Military Training:

“I hear a lot of crap about what a glorious thing it is to die for your country. It isn’t glorious—it’s stupid! You don’t go into battle to die for your country. You go into battle to make the other bastard die for his country.”
    Quote attributed to: [UNKNOWN SOURCE]

Basic training in the Antrian military lasts for just over three months. The first half of this training period consists largely of grueling physical and mental training designed to ensure that the average recruit is physically and mentally prepared for the rigors and horrors of combat. The second half of this training period consists largely of "hands on" experience, muscle memory exercises, and a number of specialized scenarios and wargames... Upon the completion of basic training, several specialized routes exist for additional training and specialization based on the recruit's chosen branch of military service. This additional training varies in setting, difficulty, and the time required to complete it, but one thing they all have in common is their ability to further prepare the recruit for a future both in the military, and after the completion of their term[s] of service as well.

The best recruits become eligible for officer training after completing basic training and at least two specialized training courses. Recruits who qualify, and choose to undergo officer training can expect an additional three months of rigorous, fast paced training designed to provide the recruit with the skills needed to be an officer in the Antrian armed forces. Officers are expected to continue with additional periodic training throughout their career where they will continue to develop new skills and gain experience in a wide array of subjects.

Special Antrian Military Technologies:

    The Janus Reactor:
An advanced variant of the cold fusion reactor, the Janus reactor was developed in 2317 to be the work horse of Antrian power generation for the foreseeable future, and as such can be found not only in both branches of the Antrian military, but on the commercial and civilian markets as well. Janus Reactors currently provide for one hundred percent of Antrian power generation, and since their inception, have proven to be remarkably safe, stable, reliable, and their ability to be micronized to a ludicrously small scale has proven to be a boon for the purposes of redundancy. Despite their generally compact size, these reactors can generate a significant amount of energy, are simple and safe enough for extensive military use, and can be made small enough that even Antrian tactical PA can mount a pair of them internally for redundancy's sake.

    Energy Conversion Armor:
Considered by many in the Antrian military to be the most important physical component to Antrian armor systems, Antrian Energy Conversion Armor was developed over a series of years starting back in 2311, but was under utilized due to it's intensive power requirements up until early 2319 when the first wave of Janus Reactors began to enter active military use. This system combines several layers of specialized composite materials and [CLASSIFIED], which, when working in conjunction, are designed to radiate incoming fire from energy weapons across the entirety of the armor, and thus decreasing and minimizing the damage by spreading out the effects of the incoming fire over a much larger surface area. Energy Conversion Armor is specialized to counter directed energy weapons rather than kinetic weaponry, but even with this, it has proven to be reasonably effective against kinetics as well; largely due to a combination of additional defensive armor layers, active defense systems such as chaff, flares, and smoke, as well as a dedicated ECM suite.

    Modular FAST Packs:
Originally developed back in 2324 as a dedicated modular attachment system to be used by Antrian strike craft, FAST Packs commonly consist of several modules designed to, in some way, enhance the capabilities of the craft that they are attached to. Most commonly, these modules consist of additional thrusters and thrust vectoring systems, reaction mass storage, dedicated sensors and ECM/ECCM systems, additional armor, and a variety of additional weapons systems; from torpedo and missile launchers to a variety of different gun pods. Rumors abound of [CLASSIFIED]...

    Orbital Modules:
A further development of the highly successful Modular FAST Pack system. Orbitals have commonly been referred to as a FAST Pack system for full sized spaceships. Tethered to their parent craft by advanced gravitic manipulators, these pods detach and orbit [hence their name] their parent craft; supplying benefits such as additional armaments, a variety of defensive systems, physical and electronic countermeasures, or simply large slabs of rugged, ablative armor. The system itself is quite simple, yet it's modular nature allows for a significant level of adaptability and diversity as the system can be set to work as either preexisting templates, or modified to fit the wants and needs of a specific ships commanding officer and their personal preferences.

    Variable Geometry:
The majority of small craft, strike craft, and even some ground-based weapon platforms in the Antrian military make use of variable geometry in their design in at least some manner; some of which are a bit more radical than others. This technology is especially useful among Antrian strike craft as it allows them to shift and manipulate their lift generating surfaces for increased mobility in an atmosphere, or to reposition and shift the positioning of their engines while in space for the same. This same system is also useful with armor plating as an appropriately timed shift with an armor plate can deflect incoming fire and/or go a long way to minimizing damage. More radical uses of this system such as variable transformations are rumored to exist, but information on this is not readily available to the public, and as such, remains largely a part of the realm of conjecture.

    Gravitic Technology:
A diverse array of different technologies used by the Antrians fall under the descriptor of "Gravitic Technology." This array of linked technologies; mostly developed and implemented by the Antrians between the years 2314 to 2323 is used in a number of ways by the Antrian military; some of which are more heavily classified than others. The most commonly known military uses of technology by the Antrians consist of artificial gravity, propulsion, and directed gravitic fields [tractor beams and shields]. More exotic uses are rumored to exist as well, but very little to no information exists that can confirm such systems; leaving this topic to be mostly debated by conspiracy theorists, and as such, not widely or commonly believed by the typical Antrian... which may or may not have been the plan by the Antrian military; if the conspiracy theorists are to be believed.

The Antrian Military Arsenal:

    Super Weapons:
    [CLASSIFIED]

    WMD's:
The Antrians have an "I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it, and not have it" attitude towards weapons of this category... Typically, for the Antrians, these weapons consist of a loose group of biological and chemical agents, mass drivers, and so called "planet buster" missiles; which, despite their name, don't actually bust planets. There is very little publicly available information concerning the majority of these weapons, the numbers in which they are available to the Antrian military, where and how they are stored, the conditions required for the authorization of their use, and so on and so forth. The only recorded use of such weapons in Antrian history was back in the year 2327 when the use of several dozen mass drivers was authorized against [REDACTED], a planet near the Delta/Beta border... The cause of this incident still remains unknown to this day.

    Exotic Weapons:
Probably the most unusual and diverse category of weapons used by the Antrians to date... This category of weapons consists largely of prototype weapons systems that have not yet entered active service [and may never enter active service for that matter], as well as certain weapons that exist mainly to fulfill a particular niche role, and as such are severely limited in both their numbers and use.

    Spinal Weapons:
The Antrians mount so called spinal weaponry on a multitude of ship classes, and on other space-based platforms as well... These weapons are almost always laser-based [a rarity in the Antrians kinetic heavy arsenal], and whether they're mounted singly or in a cluster, several specialized upgrades exist to enhance their functionality such as focusing lenses that can be configured to either focus or diffuse the beam, or to allow them to fire off axis; which goes a long way towards countering the inherent weakness of a spinal weapon system.

    Missiles, KKV's, and Torpedoes:
There are a staggering array of missiles, KKV's, and torpedoes in use with the Antrian military; from tiny, fist sized micro-missiles, to hypervelocity kinetic penetrators, to the ICBM sized anti-ship missiles and torpedo's used by Antrian Navy vessels. These weapons are an old technology... one with several centuries worth of development and refinement behind them, and their reliability and versatility cannot be denied. While the Antrian military currently has a preference for hypervelocity kinetic penetrators, a wide array of different missile and torpedo warheads are also quite popular; some more than others. These include White Phosphorus munitions [a favorite with the Army], MIRV's, all levels of nuclear warheads [a favorite with the Navy], and [CLASSIFIED] as well.

    Projectile Weapons:
When the Antrians were first developing their armed forces, a decision needed to be made. While many had wanted to go with several of the more exotic energy weapons, simpler, cheaper, and more reliable projectile weapons won out in the end. As such, a diverse array of projectile weapons were first procured for the early Antrian military, and eventually, a staggering variety of such weapons were being produced by Antrian manufacturers with which the Antrians could arm themselves. From the simplest hand-held slug throwers [pistols, rifles, cannons, etc.], to the massed batteries of railguns found on Antrian ships, the simple, and often times maligned projectile weapon has become the backbone weapon of the Antrian arsenal.

    Flamethrowers and Chemical Throwers:
The Antrian military utilizes a triad of weapons in this category. The first; and only "non-lethal" variant projects a stream of viscous liquid resin which rapidly solidifies and hardens into a durable plastic-like substance. This variant is intended to be used more for area denial than as an actual anti-personnel weapon... The other two versions are a white phosphorus launcher, and an acid spray projector respectively; both of which are utilized by the Antrian military in an anti-infantry role. There is some debate by Antrians as to the morality and ethics of using these weapons...

    Sonic Weapons:
The Sonic Weapons used in Antria are largely designed to stun, disorient, or disable targets; though they can also be extremely physically debilitating and injurious as well; causing severe, internal organ damage, and even death under certain circumstances. These weapons largely utilize different frequencies of directed and controlled sound waves; not all of which are audible, to generate their effects. These weapons are not exactly common in Antria at present... due largely to their previously mentioned, potentially long-term, debilitating effects that they can have on their victims health which has led to more squeamish individuals protesting their use as cruel and unusual. Presently, these weapons are more commonly used by law enforcement agencies and private security forces in Antria rather than by the military. However, this is changing, and military usage of these weapons is steadily on the rise as well.

    Melee Weapons:
Dedicated melee weapons was once a rarity in the Antrian military arsenal, and were largely restricted to combat knives, throwing knives, and bayonets; commonly all of these were of the monomolecular variety, though a few specialized variants also existed for use by the more elite of the Antrian armed forces as well. The most exotic of these variants utilized built-in cells of liquid nitrogen that could be injected [upon being triggered] into a target causing massive internal trauma, and ultimately, a gruesome death. In the present day, a more diverse variety of melee weapons exists including the previously mentioned weapons as well as a variety of powered claws, blades, mauls, and hammers, as well as other, far more exotic weapons; some of which, though not all, are used specifically by certain species among the Antrian diaspora of xenos races...

    Grenades and Explosives:
The Antrian military makes extensive use of a wide array of different grenades and explosive devices; many, though not all of which, are lethal. Non-lethal, or less-than-lethal options are utilized by law enforcement, private security forces, and in certain situations, by the military, and cover utility and crowd control/riot control. Smoke grenades, flash-bang grenades, tear gas canisters, sonic grenades and mines, and EMP mines are the most common of the non-lethal or less-than-lethal grenades and explosive devices used by the Antrians. Lethal options are utilized in a limited fashion by private security forces, but are largely the realm of the Antrian military. These devices consist of a variety of fragmentation grenades and anti-personnel mines, white phosphorus grenades and mines, aerosolized chemical mines, shaped charges, and anti-tank mines...

The Antrian Navy:

Background Information on the Antrian Navy:
Unlike the vast majority of races in the known galaxy, the Antrians don't exactly mass produce ships to set specifications; at least, not when it comes to full sized ships. Instead, as befitting their nomadic nature, and their own views on minimizing waste, the Antrian Navy largely consists of vessels produced from mined out asteroids of various shapes and sizes. Of course, it's not just that simple as there are a large number of steps in the actual process of turning such a mined out hunk of rock and/or ice into a viable warship [most of which is heavily classified], but the Antrians have an abundance of experience with which to draw upon, and have long mastered the process.

On the other hand, small craft such as landing craft, dropships, strike craft, and drones are the opposite; being heavily mass produced by a number of Antrian corporations for use by the Antrian Navy in a wide variety of both combat, and noncombat roles.

It should come as no surprise then, considering the above, that the Antrian Navy has a somewhat eclectic, hodgepodge appearance; especially to an outside observer who is likely to have little to no knowledge of Antrian shipbuilding practices... This commonly results in the average outside observer comparing the Antrian Navy quite poorly to the navies of other nations which, while this is understandable to a degree, is also a mistake as the Antrians are well aware of the need for a highly capable Navy. Underestimating the capabilities of an Antrian naval vessel has, as such, often been the last mistake of many a foolish or arrogant ship captain over the years... This is especially so among pirates and slavers which Antrians have a well known hatred for.

    Antrian Fleet Organization:
Several factors are taken into consideration by the Antrians when it comes to organizing different fleets. Their first consideration is typically the overall purpose of the fleet, or rather, the task which the fleet is going to be required to perform. Second is the availability of current naval assets [ships, commanders, etc.] on hand at the time it is determined that the fleet is truly needed. Third, and finally, the amount of resources that will be required for the fleet to remain in operation is then determined. It is only after all of these factors are taken into consideration that Antrian Military Command will authorize the formation of the fleet.

    Fleets:
    Battle Fleets:
While not an overly warlike people, the need for a strong, combat capable force to respond to hostile actions and threats of aggression; particularly by nation level actors is always a concern, and as such, when there is such a need, one or more Battle Fleets will commonly be formed by Antrian Military Command to deal with the problem. These are the largest of the Antrian fleets, and while there is no specific formula for what types of ships will be tasked to form such a fleet, it is guaranteed to be well over one hundred ships [including logistics and supply vessels]. In Antria, Battle Fleets are designed to make something of a statement, and as such, are a significant investment and not to be taken lightly.

    Taskforces:
There are a number of reasons for the formation of a Taskforce; not all of which are actually military [responding to a large scale disaster for example]... Despite the reason however, the formation of a Taskforce is still a significant investment in resources, and can also be a more than suitable show of force when required as they commonly consist of just over one hundred ships [including logistics and supply vessels]. As such, the Taskforce is the most common large formation of military power utilized by the Antrian military, and as such, can be a fairly common sight throughout the region of space in which the Antrians are currently inhabiting.

    Scout Fleets:
Scout Fleets are typically responsible for most of the long range exploration efforts undertaken by the Antrians. They're also responsible for scouting out future destinations for the largely nomadic Antrian nation; which includes searching for potential threats, dangerous anomalies, and obstacles, as well as anything that may prove to be extra beneficial to the Antrian nation such as rare minerals, salvage, and alien artifacts. These fleets typically have a larger that average logistics and support element attached due to the longer duration [typically] of their assignments in comparison to other fleets that may be formed by Antrian Military Command.

    Patrol Fleets:
Patrol Fleets are small, highly mobile groups of ships designed to patrol a relatively small area of space [usually a few systems at the most] in and around where the Antrians have currently set up operations. Commonly, such fleets are tasked with small scale, but important jobs such as search and rescue, customs enforcement, anti-piracy and anti-slavery operations, and "border" enforcement. They'll also track and monitor [and sometimes shadow] foreign vessels operating in the same region of space; playing a "friendly" game of cat-and-mouse as it were. Patrol Fleets are the most commonly sighted fleet typically operated by Antrian Military Command, and are even more so the closer you get to the heart of any large Antrian operation as they perform a vital role as part of an early warning system for potential threats and hostile activities.

The Antrian Army:

Background Information on the Antrian Army:
The Antrian Army is primarily a defense oriented force... One that is heavily geared towards fighting in enclosed, claustrophobic quarters such as are common with urban warfare and tunnel fighting; relying heavily on various makes of power armored infantry, a number of support weapons, and a mixture of light vehicles; though heavier units are, naturally, available as well. Despite this focus on defensive [and urban] warfare, the Antrian Army is also surprisingly mobile, largely thanks to a preponderance of armored cavalry [and air cavalry] elements which makes them quite well suited to attack as well, and their logistics capabilities serve them well in giving them sufficient staying power even when operating with limited support.

Aside from their combat related duties, the Antrian Army is also responsible for a number of noncombat duties as well. An example of this is the Antrian Army Corps of Engineers which handle a number of vital noncombat roles... Roles such as bomb disposal, salvage and recovery operations [of damaged or destroyed vehicles and military equipment], and a number of engineering tasks related to different construction efforts such as bridge building, and the construction of forward operating bases and the like.
