I'm interested about the Sunni-Shia split, how big is it? Does this region have a majority of Sunnis or Shias believers? And how does this region deal when people debate about it?

I know that the Sunnis believe that Abu Bakr, the father of Muhammad's wife Aisha, was Muhammad's rightful successor and that Shias believe that Muhammad divinely ordained his cousin and son-in-law Ali Ibn Abi Talib. That's about it when it comes to my knowledge about the split...

Its not as big in our daily lives as the media would like you to think. In areas where Sunni and Shia live together like here in Kuwait there are positive relations and they pray together, but ofcourse there are extremists on both sides. The thing is nobody really cares about the sucession anymore because it already happened, Abu Bakr May God be pleased with him already succeeded the Prophet Peace and Blessings of God be upon him as the first Caliph in Islam, Ali bin Abi Talib May God be pleased with him also eventually became fourth Caliph, so Sunnis and particularly Arab Shia respect the companions of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH (some Iranians have a negative view of Abu Bakr and Umar because they conquered their Persian Empire, obviously not all of them but this was the case even when Iran was a Sunni country). However in areas where the population is entirely Sunni or entirely Shia there is less of this positive atmosphere because there is no understanding between the sects. The Western media doesn't help when it presents ISIS for example as Sunnis wanting to slaughter Shia or vice versa and divides these communities even further. In the region we don't really debate our differences we tend to focus on unity and rather successfully do so, there are more focal points of unity rather than divisions. Sunni Muslims make up the majority of Muslims between 75-85% of the Muslim population world wide while Shia tend to make up most of the rest, in the region most are Sunni but we also have quite a few Shia Muslims present and there exist no problems between us. All Muslims are brothers. As long as you follow the Quran and sunnah of the Prophet PBUH you will be on the correct path inshallah. And we won't let anything divide that unity.

The thing about Islamic sects is that Allah (SWT) teaches us about the Christians and Jews who split their religion into sects and that we Muslims shouldn't do that. Allah (SWT) says that anyone who adheres to a particular sect is not of the Sahabah, not in the Islamic religion. That is why I don't adhere to a sect.
