Because the poor guy rang caz on her phone and I happened to be with her at the time. It was the damnist awkwardist conversation ever. the guy totally sounded lost when Caza showed no hint of recognition. :)
Well, its not often you get a phone call originating in the Philippines from a long lost cousin. I really can't place the guy. but he must be a cousin because I have him listed as a cousin on FB and all my other cousins have him listed as a cousin as well. I'm just trying to recall him. I feel like I've totally made a fool of myself and I'd definitely look like a fool in front of barbs. I sent her a message just a few minutes ago requesting verification on poor robert Gonzales, my long lost cousin. :)
Well, I bet he sounded defensive when you asked him about his father? I thought that kind of thing was kind of taboo in the Philippines. Or at least insulting to suggest he might not have been a how is it put, "member of the Angelo clan"
Actually, he was defensive. But hey, I had a good reason to ask. All my male cousins have "Angelo" as their sirname not "Gonzales" and I know that my aunt didn't marry a "Gonzales" so I wanted to establish his claim of filial relationship to me. I didn't mean to suggest that he was not a member of the Angelo tribe. I just can't recall any Gonzales' in my family. :)
I'm confused. Caz, how do you keep track of whose your cousin if you have so many and how damn far back along the line do you go until you finally declare someone not to be your cousin or related to you at the very least? And what does "ate" mean?
El, everyone in the Philippines are related to me in some way or another. We count first cousins, second cousins, third and fourth cousins and so on and so on. Hell I probably have cousins even my mother has never heard of but which my grandparents will assure us are our cousins. even my cousins' cousins from their mothers' side of the family are included as cousins of the angelo clan. We're getting that big as a family that to tell you the truth, we're probably streched throughout the Philippine archipelago. and still more and more angelo babies are being born. :)
Oh and "ate" is a prefix. I can't think of an english equivalent. The closest word I can think of is "elder" Usually, younger members of the family would address their elder cousins or sisters as "ate" or "elder" followed by the name of the person they are addressing. thus "ate Caren." Its more a sign of respect than anything else and I usually don't like it being applied to me but try telling that to a "properly brought up" fillo and they'll most likely not listen. :)
The new region is up. I named it the United Federation of Independent States (U.F.I.S.). Hopefully that name works with everyone. If you're not role playing and you just want to relax or whatever, head on over. And remember to keep some puppets in our two normal regions so that they don't delete themselves :). I've already placed a puppet of mine in the new region.
