I feel that veers more toward Westworld territory, which isn't what I was thinking at all.
Lovin' that shade of blue though.
I'd call it fantasy. :P
I've been thinking about ways to make the Niuti more interesting on the biological side, and I'm thinking about making them closer to four-armed caecilians rather than four-armed humanoid salamanders. The presence of humanoid Niuti in my last two rps could be explained by the widespread use of genetic augmentation and body-modification to suit specific needs, as some Genomitan Niuti might decide to modify themselves or the dna of their still unhatched children to make themselves less unsettling to the many humanoid mammals that occupy the galaxy.
I realize that such a change would also influnce many other aspects of their culture, from housing construction to combat, but I see this as a good thing and an interesting challenge. What do you think?
I think altering themselves or the DNA of impending children for the sole purpose of "unsettling humanoid mammals" makes absolutely no sense on a large scale. One person doing so, sure; people do weird and/or stupid things, but developing a culture of it? I want to say no.
Perhaps I chose my words poorly. Transhumanism and adapting their bodies to adapt and thrive in harsh environments are important parts of Genomitan culture. Adapting their bodies so they can perform their roles better is a logical extension of that. And the intent was to make them or their children less unsettling or frightening, not more so.
Then again, it was just a suggestion to explain why the few Niuti that appeared in my last rps are different from the way I picture them now. And I rather like the mental image of them with snakelike instead of humanoid bodies.
Speaking of aliens, I need to figure out what I'm going to do with my aliens.
Nope, you chose your words right, I just missed the word "less" and read that they were deliberately making themselves unsettling.
However, I still think that's not overly likely. Why should they care? Why is the onus on them (and why do they accept this?) to be more "normal" when it should be on the people around them to stop finding them unsettling and get used to the fact. If people grow up with them around, I would think that they're not so likely to find them very unsettling unless they've developed a good dose of bigotry.
I agree with you there. The thing is, it's not the other people in their nation that find them disturbing, but rather members of other species. Some might find dealing with nocturnal amphibians with snakelike bodies less than pleaseant at first, and that can make first contact scenarios more difficult. Sure, the Star Community is also home to transhumans and other species, but if the aptitude tests show that a Niuti has the skills it takes to join the Director caste and become an ambassador, that's what they will become, just like members of any other member species.
Either way, they get the same chance as anybody else. And I'm mostly looking for the many way havinga snake tail instead of legs would shape a species and nation's culture.
That depends on what technology your civilization uses.
It would be steampunk if most of your technology is powered by steam and/or compressed gas.
If it only looks "steampunk", but uses generic FT technology underneath the facade, then it is merely Neo-Victorian. Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age is an example of this.
It would be clockpunk of most of your tech is powered by springs, gears, weights, and other purely mechanical devices. An example of futuristic clockpunk is Niccolo Baccigalupi's The Windup Girl. I haven't read it yet, but it's on my shortlist.
Steam
My ships with their space furnaces powered by space oil pushing space reciprocating engines disagree with you. :P
Not very many actual examples of something I'm thinking of... Must be doing something different.
Greetings all. I'm a (yet again) resurrected FT nation. Always hoping to do some RP'ing, seldom actually manage to do so what with life and work always getting in the way. Recently got the itch to get back on NS, rework my vision for Alannika, and hopefully get around to some RP'ing this time. After doing some region browsing this seems like a good place to plop down and set up shop again.
Actually, Dishonored is kind of all over the map. Technically it is mostly dieselpunk since most of the technology is powered by combustion, albeit using whale oil instead of petroleum-based fuels. There is also clockpunk (those new automatons, clockwork fuse grenades), teslapunk (arc pylons, walls of light), and with the windmills in Karnaca we're even starting to get some solarpunk in there as well. Yet curiously, none of it is steam-powered, but the aesthetic is mostly Victorian. In short, Dishonored is a unique setting of the type I hope to write stories in some day.
In case it isn't obvious by now, I'm something of an expert when it comes to the -punk genres.
Excellent book. I'd say clockpunk is probably low on the list of adjectives I'd use to describe it, though.
Greetings, The second formic empire and Alannika, and welcome to TLC! If you have not done so already, I would advise taking a look at The Local Cluster Mission Statement as well as the FT Advice and Assistance Thread. If you have any questions please feel free to field them here, send a telegram to one of our advisers, or drop-by our Internet Relay Chat channel (linked in the World Factbook Entry above).
Again, welcome to The Local Cluster! :D
Except Rethan.
If he liked it, he would have eaten by now.
Greetings and salutations on behalf of Her Divinity, and all of Her children.
We are the fledgling Divine Sovereignty of Houseidou, a stellar theocracy based around the teachings and philosophies of our Divine Mother, Izumi, which is called "Houseidou", or "The Way of the Celestial Phoenix". By following the Seven Virtues, we seek to bring enlightenment to all who will listen, and accept Her Divinity within themselves.
We believe in the sacred flame of the Celestial Phoenix, and the power of fire, both in its ability to provide life-giving light and heat, and its potential to cause pain and destruction to those that do not understand it, or seek to defy it.
We are gracious of your acceptance of us into your realm. You are welcome to visit Irori, the center of our faith, which is forever blessed by Izumi and Her Seven Sacred Suns to never experience the terror of night, and bask in eternal day. We hope to show the other worlds we have colonized and directly control, and maybe even claim new ones for the faithful to create new hearths and forges in Her Divinity's name.
We humbly thank you, our new interstellar neighbors.

Just for the record, the RMB is not In-Character here, but welcome regardless! :D
"A warm welcome on behalf of the Star Community and it's citizens. Though we and the tenets of our faiths may differ, we hope that our people can still get along.
Perhaps I shall accept your offer and visit your world some day, with the proper protection of course.
Walk within the harsh light of day for as long as you desire, but take care it does not burn you."
Ooc: seriously though, a very well written entry post. Perhaps we could do an rp together some time, even though many of my people are nocturnal amphibians and their main religion and yours would probably be diametrically opposed in some regards, as their faith regards the darkness as soothing and protective instead of terrifying. That said, the Star Community is not a theocracy and freedom of religion exists, and this could be an interesting contrast. Perhaps we could do an interfaith meeting to show each other facets of our religions, like in the Babylon 5 episode "Parliament of dreams". We could call it "Ceremonies of day and night." Who's in?
Would be interesting.
