Something of Xis' that should be tucked away in his pants if he bothered to wear some.
This is not appropriate for this RMB. Please refrain from posting material like this again.
Wal-Mart is just a part of the oppressive hierarchy!
I think it's less about efficiency in general and more than they're so overused in sci-fi movies. After Earth is a great example of having holograms that make no sense, just for having holograms. For some reason some people seem to think that once holograms are a thing there will be no more need for there to be any kind of flat screens, even though there are things they do just as well or even better. There are things that holograms would be great at when you need to see something in 3D -it seems like they'd be great for maps to show topography and terrain, for example- but I also remember that After Earth features what's basically a pill bottle with a holographic label on it. Why is the label holographic? Because sci-fi. That's the only reason as far as I can tell. So I think that's what CS was getting at.
Yup! And some pretty impressive Olympus Mons style shield volcanoes, too.
As another forumgoer once said, what's happening in my pants is always relevant!
TIL I can cause earthquakes.
Just because you keep taking pictures of it and putting in the newspaper doesn't make it relevant.

Greetings, The gox, and welcome to TLC! If you have not done so already, I would advise taking a look at The Local Cluster Mission Statement as well as the FT Advice and Assistance Thread. If you have any questions please feel free to field them here, send a telegram to one of our advisers, or drop-by our Internet Relay Chat channel (linked in the World Factbook Entry above).
Again, welcome to The Local Cluster! :D

I just realized something: TLC is really "talc" spelled in capital letters without the "A." The "A" has a triangular shape, just like...

So what was that about plants absorbing and secreting minerals?
Right, didn't say anything about this earlier, but this kind of meme/reaction image/video spam? Not good. Please keep posts on the RMB germane to the object and purpose of the region. This is not a chat thread.
Well, without new crust being created, low or nonexistent plate activity results (we think - we haven't seriously gone prospecting on Mars) in a fairly mineral-poor planet. Most of the minerals present are going to be bound up in the sand and soil, and they'll be in compounds rather than in their pure form (Fe2O3, or rust, rather than pure iron, for example). For humans at our current technological level, reversing the oxidization to get the pure iron back out is very difficult. Biological life, on the other hand, can extract and use iron out of complex forms like spinach. With enough biological tampering, you might be able to engineer a plant that extracted a particular metal out of the soil, turned it into a more usable form (like goethite, FeO(OH), a type of iron ore), and either secreted it as pellets, or used it as a building material in its trunk. The process would be incredibly slow - a plant might produce a few pellets a year, or you'd need several trees to make a sword - and the plants would probably deplete the soil in a few generations, but it could be done.
Essentially, metal of any sort is going to be precious, and a lot of agriculture space (particularly on the rich-soiled sides of those volcanoes) is going to be given over to whatever plants are producing your iron, copper, tin, and silver. Ironically, aluminium, which requires huge amounts of technological achievent to process, might be the most common in your society, as it's light (so it's found on or near the surface with regularity) and mixes in sand or soil in the form of aluminium oxide or a myriad of other forms. Your people are probably going to avoid using metal for anything that doesn't need to be made out of it - I'd recommend looking at medieval Japan and at wood-bodied cars and planes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hughes_H-4_Hercules) to see what you can do to reduce metal use.
I posted a story on the Compendium if anyone's interested.
Sorry, the RMB was so loaded with such behavior it just felt like the norm.

Thank you! I'm happy to be here with you!
Thank you! ^^
Nah we got in trouble for that, best to just tone it down for the time being.
Quick question for my FT peeps, hover or tracks what do you add the pros and cons for each one
Track shoes
Pros:
- cheaper to make
- cheaper to use
- easier to maintain
- can be mass produced more easily
Cons:
- visible track prints
- exerts greater downforce
Hover
Pros:
- little or no presence of tracks
- no moving parts
Cons:
- hard to steer
- harder to maintain
- more expensive to make
Feel free to add m8s.
Related to the lesser or total lack of downforce on a hover vehicle, but it could do things like pass over bodies of water quickly that tracked vehicles would either have a harder time with or couldn't do at all without needing a boat or bridge. At least when it comes to military matters, you can't underestimate the value of being able to move quickly over a river. Doubly so if it's a river of something particularly nasty.
The hover vehicles definitely have the advantage over tracks in terms of mobility, though I suspect they'd have weaker armor in order to help keep themselves sustained off the ground. That issue may or may not be fixed by giving the hover vehicles shield generators, depending on how effective the shields are and the weight of the shield generator itself. No doubt the hover vehicles will be higher in price and slower in production.
On a minor note: The issue of ground vehicles not being able to traverse over water is a little moot if the grounded tanks in question are similar to Red Alert 3's Tsunami Tank.
