I don't really have an issue with 5%; it's those that charge 70%, even more, for their services. Some "charities" are into this scam, too. These organizations spend virtually all the money they raise on themselves--to the extent they do "education" about heart disease, cancer, etc., it's in the statistics they quote on their never-ending fund-raising letters. Such things are barely legal, free speech and all, but they give legitimate charities a bad name.

It seems only common sense.
Rather than giving charity, we should be working to establish a social system under which poverty is impossible. Charity simply perpetuates the problem, trying to solve through private property what the institution of private property itself created.

Ah. In this case the charity concerned is the Multiple Sclerosis society. Such charities help to fund research, which I don't think is something that society can or should provide automatically.

Why? I follow your reasoning about creating a just social order wherein poverty is impossible; but particularly since that's never been achieved IRL, what are you going to do about the impoverished people you have in the meantime? Private charities have proven themselves time and again of being unable by themselves to provide a true social safety net.
Post major hurricanes, private charities have shown themselves to be better than almost any group at organizing and getting food and shelter available rapidly. In my part of the world, these groups also work together, regardless of ideological differences, in the face of disaster. If we had to wait on the government to act, people would be much worse off. I understand why government agencies have the rules they do, but sometimes people need a meal and a safe place to stay without filling out forms.

About private charities, a pitfall can be that their help may come with strings attached. Conform to unrelated criteria so-and-so to be worthy of our aid, or forget it. Thus charity can become an instrument of molding people's behaviour, a means to an end. Though something similar may occur when it's a state agency too, helping and selecting worthy recipients based on unrelated criteria which this particular government in power wishes to push.

We could debate the merits of outlawing anything that might give you a hangnail vs. the Anarchies' anything-goes attitude. I remember while in grad school at Yale, one of my fellow students was mugged inside the dorm just a few feet away from my dorm room. None of us realized what had happened until it was too late, but someone called 911 to report the crime. A dorm mate, from Argentina, was shocked: "You call the police when something bad happens???"
You're west of all the Europeans, who are apparently later risers. Unfortunately, this region is top-heavy with Americans plus various small English and Scottish contingents and few outside of the Anglosphere. I can understand that philosophy is primarily a written discipline and perhaps people for whom English is a second (or third or fourth) language might feel they could miss some of the subtleties of the arguments embedded in the language. Who can say? I just wish we were a more diverse lot.
