Germany 1- Northern Ireland 0: What is there to say? Germany had possession for 71% of the time; took 26 shots; 9 on goal; and manage but one score ~ Gomez (30’). Michael McGovern, the opposing goalie tallied 8 saves but his offense had only two shots total. Of interest ~ neither team had a yellow card.
Poland 1- Ukraine 0: After an energetic start Poland fell flat for most of the game until Blaszczykowski (54’) measured the only score of the match. Ukraine carried the possession and the shots for most of the game but couldn’t find the net being blanked in all three games of the tournament. Amazingly Poland ends the group stage with 7 points. Could they be the surprise of 2016?

Argentina 4- USA 0: All the hype by the announcers could not erase the fact that La Albiceleste is at a quality level unseen by most Americans. Lavezzi opened the scoring at 3’ off a beautiful assist by Messi who then placed (32’) a sublime free kick in the upper right corner that God is still admiring. The best the Americans can mustard are cheap fouls by Dempsey and Guzan with only Demsey getting carded. The football clinic continued with the USA mustering but one shot all night as Higuain scores twice more in the second half ~ one off a superb pass by Messi who may also be the best midfielder in the world. Argentina is through to the final.

Hungary 3- Portugal 3: Last week I belittled Hungary and today I pen the fortitude that is the Magyar eleven. With top 10 Portugal facing elimination 37 year old Hungarian Zoltan Gera increased the pressure with a goal at 19’. At 42’ Ronaldo taps into his abilities and finds Nani to the left of the net to score the equalizer just before the break. Minutes into the second period Dzsudzsak sees his free kick skim off the wall and bring the Magyars the lead. Ronaldo finally scores as sweet back tap with his right to bring the game even anew at 50’. Not to be undone Dzsudzsak gets another strike to deflect into the net and again provide Hungary the lead. At 62’ the Peacock gets his double via a header to bring the game to 3-3. After running his mouth and tossing a microphone into a lake the game was Ronaldo’s finest moment albeit if only a third tie to see Portugal through.
Iceland 2- Austria 1: Austria’s only chance to see its way through was victory over an Icelandic eleven with two career ties. Iceland began the game in top form with a shot off the woodwork before Bodvarsson (18’) found goal on a throw in. Nevertheless Austria controlled possession 63-37 and took 23 shots as they pushed forward. Their best opportunity was a penalty at 37’ which caromed off the left post. At 60’ they were redeemed with a fine strike by Schopf to even the score. Throwing everyone forward Austria were caught on a three to one counter which saw Iceland garner their first win at 94’ off the foot of Traustason.
Belgium 1- Sweden 0: Zlatan Ibrahimovic announcing his impending retirement Sweden had to win or go home. The early stars of the match were goalies Andreas Isaksson (8) and Thibaut Courtois (4) who made quality saves to keep clean sheets. Alas, someone had to win, and it was the off the foot of Radja Nainggolan who placed a brilliant strike through at 84’. Despite their 6 points Belgium has not impressed thus far and move on as the second placed team of the group.
Ireland 1- Italy 0: Forty fouls and six yellow cards must have been a brutal spectacle to watch. With Italy resting eight starters the Irish still needed a victory to move on to the knockout round. Italy managed only one shot on goal while the Shamrocks mustard more attempts. A sweet pass from 25 meters found Italian backup goalie Sirigu coming off his mark only to be denied the save as Robbie Butler headed into the net at 85’ for the victory. Ireland thus joins England, Wales, and Northern Ireland into the next round leaving some Brits ecstatic.
Chile 2- Colombia 0: Chile began the game on fire with multiple passes setting up a quick goal by Aranguiz at 7’. Not minutes later Fuenzalida was in the right place to tap in a rebound off an Alexis Sanchez shot the caromed off the post to make the score 2-0. For the rest of the first have each team had opportunities with no satisfaction. And then the rain came delaying the second half by two hours. Soon the fouls would build, 40 total, with six yellows in the second half to include Carlos Sanchez’ second at 57’ leaving Colombia further challenged with only 10 men. In the end Chile goes thru to set up a rematch of last year’s final with Argentina.
