Hermanos y Hermanas,
Suban a nacer conmigo.
Denme sus manos desde la profunda
zona de su dolor diseminado.

No volverán del tiempo subterráneo.
No volverán sus vozes endurecidas.

y a todos los viajeros. Dondequiera que estén.

Brothers and Sisters,
Ascend and be born with me.

Your hardened voices will not return.

Love Sonnet 73

Hombre y mujer talaron montañas y jardines,

^^^^^^^

You'll recall, perhaps, that pointed, sharp man
who came from the darkness like a knife
and, before we knew it, knew . . .
he saw the smoke and knew it came from fire.

The black-haired, pale woman
surged like a fish from the abyss,
and between the two of them they built up
an engine armed to its numerous teeth against love.

Man and woman, they cut down mountains and gardens,
descended to the rivers, clambered up the walls,
climbed to the heights with their atrocious artillery.

And love knew then that it was called love.
So, when I raised my eyes to your name,
your heart quickly showed me the way.

Translation: Terence Clarke

Soneto XVII

******************

I do not love you as if you were a rose of salt, or topaz,
or an arrow of carnations spread by fire.
I love you as certain dark things are loved,
in secret, between the shadow and soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms,
but carries inside itself the hidden light of flowers,
and thanks to your love a certain tightened fragrance,
rising from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you directly without problems or pride;
In this manner I love you because I know no other way,

only like this where I am not nor are you,
so close together that your hand on my chest is mine,
so close together that your eyes close when I sleep.

Translation: mine.

No está mal. Excluding the anaphoric flab in the penultimate and ultimate lines, your translation approximates the average rendering. Above all, I favor Clarke's (A Kiss For Señor Guevara) interpretation, particularly the wordplay and metaphorical license in the ultimate, so close that your eyes close on my dreams.

Hopefully, Borges is welcome in Machu Picchu.

Ajedrez

I

Caballo, armada reina, rey postrero,
Oblicuo alfil y peones agresores.

Cuando los jugadores se hayan ido,
Cuando el tiempo los haya consumido,
Ciertamente no habrá cesado el rito.

En el Oriente se encendió esta guerra
Cuyo anfiteatro es hoy toda la tierra.
Como el otro, este juego es infinito.

II

Tenue rey, sesgo alfil, encarnizada

Chess

I

Set in their studious corners, the players

move the gradual pieces. Until dawn

the chessboard keeps them in its strict confinement

with its two colors set at daggers drawn.

Within the game itself the forms give off

their magic rules: Homeric castle, knight

swift to attack, queen warlike, king decisive,

slanted bishop, and attacking pawns.

Eventually, when the players have withdrawn,

when time itself has finally consumed them,

the ritual will certainly not be done.

It was in the East this war took fire.

Today the whole earth is its theatre.

Like the game of love, this game goes on forever.

II

Faint-hearted king, sly bishop, ruthless queen,

straightforward castle, and deceitful pawn --

over the checkered lack and white terrain

they seek out and begin their armed campaign.

They do not know it is the player's hand

that dominates and guides their destiny.

They do not know an adamantine fate

controls their will and lays the battle plan.

The player too is captive of caprice

(the words are Omar’s) on another ground

where black nights alternate with whiter days.

God moves the player, he in turn the piece.

But what god beyond God begins the round

of dust and time and sleep and agonies?

I kicked the last 2 lines around for a few and decided that the repetitive flow works just as well in English. I also can't see "sueño" as "dream" in this instance; it doesn't work. But that's just me.

And Borges is welcome any time.
