I am both relieved that Hillary lost and very worried that Trump will be President.

Chironica

So sorry you guys! Woke up this morning to the Trump news. :(

I can't help but laugh at the fact that Hillary lost again.

Americans here who have been shocked by the results tonight (especially gender, sexual and other minorities) please know that your neighbours to the north stand by you. We are just as astounded by the results as you are.

The democrats kinda deserved it after they banded together and threw Sanders under a bus.
It was from that moment when I decided Trump was the lesser evil.

Now we suck (and not in the good way).

The so-called "Grand" Old Party is now going to be the sole controller of the House, Senate, Presidency, and the Supreme Court. They can ram through all manner of Krazie Konservatives to sit there for decades. This is a sad day for anyone in the United States who is not any, all, or some of the following categories: white, male, straight, healthy, wealthy, native born to the US, and on and on...

Perhaps, should the country not descend into true chaos over the next four years, we can try again in the 2018 midterms and the 2020 race, and this time rationality and sanity will prevail. But now, at least for two years until the midterm elections, the lights are going out, and they won't be relit for a while.

The guy who picked one of the most anti-queer politicians in the United States to be his running mate, was dogwhistling to white nationalists and neo-Nazis so loudly we could here it from Canada, and has literally promised revenge on journalists who were critical of him is the *lesser* evil?

The woman used a private email server, for crying out loud, and the FBI found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing. Sure the establishment supported an establishment candidate and it wasn't at all fair to Bernie but there's a difference from being a run-of-the-mill Washington insider and being someone literally backed by the KKK.

I saw donald say nice things about lbgtqs community one time on tv.

If he just remembers the meaning of those letters it'll be alright. He seems indifferent about it.

Pence will not be indifferent. Pence is one of the worst Republicans on LGBTQ legislation, and Trump's Vice President.

But he's not in charge, and he may get the boot if he disagrees with the new god-emperor

Yeah, here's the thing, it's the entire world that's going to burn under Trump, not just the Democrats you're pissy at.

I don't believe that at all, and I cannot see the future.

Azeia and Chironica

Given that both Trump and the GOP are dedicated to fight any real attempts to address climate change, I'd say "the entire world's gonna burn" is a pretty fair assessment. Is there anything we can do at this point?

Economically speaking, Trump may prove to be a surprise (a good one). If he really goes through opposing TTIP and other trade deals like it, that's a very positive thing. And that's not the only point where a Trump anti-something President may be a good choice. The problem with Trump is his social policies. He will appoint a conservative judge for the Supreme Court and he will go back on everything the US gain in social liberties and equality gain in the last 16 years. Worse he's going to do a rollback to 1950s on these issues and that will not be undone easily. Like in Britain where the bigots got vindicated with Brexit and we're seeing a rise in hate crimes, the same will happen with just Trump being elected. Everything will just go downhill from there.

On a curious note, there was another guy who got elected with a speech about blaming a certain group of people for all the woes in "his" country. That same guy also wanted "family values". That guy also wanted to make "his" country great again. His name was Hitler. Curious fact that it was in result of the elections on November 6th 1932 that Hitler got to power.

Unless Senate Democrats are able to filibuster the worst of Trump's policies and the Supreme Court rules some of his ideas unconstitutional, we could see some horrendous things almost immediately:

  • Obamacare is repealed;

  • Obama's executive orders are rescinded;

  • Gay marriage is made illegal again, or perhaps it is turned over to the states (which will be horrible for me personally);

  • financial panic is already gripping the world, and Trump is going to pursue an oligarchist American supremacist economic policy, with unprecedented tax cuts for the wealthy and the risk of a Second Depression;

  • legal immigration of Muslims will come to an abrupt stop and I don't find it inconsistent that he will try to deport people whose only crime is belonging to Islam from this country;

  • he will likely seek some way to subvert the 14th Amendment; form an illegal immigrant deportation task force; and actually build that wall he's been talking about;

  • he will likely try to subvert many pieces of civil rights legislation/SCOTUS rulings/undermine legal abortion/undermine economic and social gains for blacks, etc.;

  • he is going to have a rocky relationship with our key allies and will alienate almost every relationship except Russia;

  • if he makes good on his campaign promise, he will find a way to imprison Hillary Clinton and will certainly use the office of President to subvert his enemies and perceived enemies;

  • he will likely not improve or expand the VA to treat American soldiers who have returned with physical and mental wounds;

  • generally, I would expect the unraveling of the social safety net in this country;

  • and so much more....

I see it likely after two years of Trump, in 2018, both houses of Congress revert to Democratic control. If we are lucky, he will be a 1-term president and/or be impeached before he can do anything too major. Few people are aware that he is currently facing some 3,500+ legal suits. He will face charges of racketeering in December. He may try to abuse the powers of the presidency to bypass the legal issues against him.

I find it incredulous that in the latest poll, 32% of Americans thought he was "honest and trustworthy." We've never had such a pathological liar elected to the White House.

I firmly place the blame on FBI Director James B. Comey for his unprecedented interference in the election with his Oct. 28th letter to Congress. By the time he retracted the implied charges, pre-voting had been going on for 9 days and many information-poor voters never got word of the retraction. It allowed Trump to make hay for 9 of the last 11 days of the campaign. Maybe the polls were wrong before the action, giving Clinton some 90%+ chance of being elected in a probable landslide, but we will never know. His appointment may be the single largest mistake of the Obama administration.

My husband is terrified that he may lose his job and that our marriage may be invalidated. With the catastrophic drop in the stock market, likely both of our pension programs have taken a major hit and he may have to work several years past his planned retirement at 62 to give his nest egg a chance to rebound and for us to continue to make payments on the house. In the worst case scenario, he loses his job, we have to sell the house and downscale, our marriage is declared null and void, and we lose the legal protections that marriage afforded. He was nearly in tears as he left for work this morning.

*ugh* And so it begins. And I thought we couldn't sink any lower the GWB, but I was so wrong.

Hugs, and a reminder that those of us who stood with you before will stand with you again, and will fight for your rights. Already composing letters to my congressmen, reminding them that I will be watching their actions, and I do not want progress repealed.

My guess is that trump won't do anything crazy. He just told Americans what they wanted to hear the whole time. I want to think of it like a really crappy video game. The advertisments were amazing to a lot of people, but once it gets released, it's a disappointment to everyone and it doesn't come with all the features it promised.

I've just been looking into Mike Pence's stances on various LGBT+ issues, and they are truly horrifying. He openly supports child torture in the form of conversion shock therapy. He wants to give the decision over same-sex marriage back to individual states, which will lead to people in states like Alabama and Mississippi never getting same-sex marriage.

The lights went out across Europe in 1914.
102 years later, the lights went out across North America.

It's easy to become complacent when it comes to civil rights and the advancement of liberty. We think "the battle for gay marriage is over; we can just ignore that issue". We forget that the second we become complacent, these hard-fought rights can be quickly repealed. We must remain vigilant.

It's easy to feel sorry for all American minorities right now - Hispanics, lefties, Muslims, the disabled - but LGBT+ Americans really have the best part of my sympathy. There's little I can do, but I won't forget about you guys. Good luck. :)

I wouldn't throw up a "Game Over" screen just because a bunch of Republicans took office. At least, not quite yet.

You see, there are two critical things that we must keep in consideration. One, there's only so much a GOP-majority federal government can do to upset the balance of power - never mind that it would take them a little while to appoint Supreme Court Justices even if they were all on the same page. Two, they're not all on the same page - if this election cycle has proven one thing, it's that the GOP is at its most fractured... and therefore vulnerable. Fear is what encouraged so many people to vote for Trump, and fear is the only thing tying moderates, libertarians, and fiscal conservatives to the social conservatives and alt-right. It took every ounce of hasty coordination they could muster to shut the Dems out... a feat I expect they'd be hard-pressed to repeat at any point in the future.

I don't think the maverick President Trump will get along as swimmingly with his more traditional Republican Congress as people are inclined to believe - which, of course, is fine with me.

(Besides, the true fallout from these elections is everything that happened on a more local level - for instance, the reinstatement of the death penalty in certain states [boo] and the legalization of medical and/or recreational marijuana in others [yay].)

Shanbao and Ace pride

And here's the bright side.
Minorities can put in the effort and move to the West-Coast or Canada so the new Republican government will impact them far less, if they did the latter then the Republicans would be pressured into warming up with minorities or labor would continue leaving their nation. And the Green party has also taken a good boost out of this so we can expect the next elections after 4 years to be significantly more progressive, so instead of 8 years of nothingness you get 4 years of suffering but are awarded with a potential of a progressive spring.
