LGBT Equality wrote:Relationships are tough. In terms of heterosexual marriages, a little over half eventually end up with divorce, and I hazard a guess that half of the ones who do stay together are in some way fundamentally unhappy about it. So, for a heterosexual marriage, there appears to be about a 1-in-4 chance that the marriage will last and be good. I don't see any reason to believe that LGBTQ folks will be any better (or worse) at it than heterosexuals. Too many people overlook that relationships (especially marriage) are about growing together, not simply a 1-time promise. Lots of communication is essential. Don't play that batsh!t crazy game of "if he really loved me, he would know what I want." None of us, to my knowledge, are mind readers. So the major way, indeed the only certain way for a partner to know something is for you to tell him or her. If it's important to celebrate your birthday, tell your partner as much instead of sulking after getting only a token gift.

I think at least gay marriages would have a higher chance of lasting because (more often than not) women are rather high maintenance and also because there's a much smaller dating pool, so you can't just break it off and say "there's plenty of fish in the sea".

That's just my opinion though.

Fiordlandia v wrote:It's because restricting guns in America isn't gonna stop crime. Most of gun deaths come from gang wars. Look at Chicago, some of the strictest gun violence in America– yet people are dying on the streets. What we need to do is crack down on illegal gun smuggling, which means fortifying the border. Criminals who use guns obviously don't register them.
Another interesting fact: gun crime in the U.S. has dropped 60% since the 1970s. You know why? Minimum sentencing for drug-related crimes.
Personally, I believe we need to make minimum sentences for gun-related crime. All gun-related crime should become a federal crime. If you rob a store with a gun, you get minimum locked up for 50 years. Or like what they did in Virginia: If you're caught with illegal firearms and illegal drugs, you're locked up for a minimum of (I forget exactly how many) years, no questions asked. Drug and gun-related crime has plummeted in VA since the enforcement of those laws.

It sounds like this solution would massively swell the prison population which is already one of the highest in the world (by rate of incarceration per unit of population)? Or do people in the US not really think of this as a problem? We have our own gang wars here but at least there are fewer guns involved so fewer mass casualty situations.

Yeah, I admit that I downplayed how much work you have to do to gain a dog's trust. On top of that, it's a pretty good idea to find animals who are "compatible" with your lifestyle. Those who aren't compatible require just as much patience and the care that real human relationships do, perhaps even moreso if the dog is young or was traumatized in the past. It's well worth it, because once you get an animal's trust, it's pretty much impossible to lose it. Once you're on good terms with a dog, you'll never doubt whether or not they think less of you for doing the everyday things that tick off most humans. You could stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot somebody and you wouldn't lose their approval. It's probably the closest thing to "true love" people have the fortune of experiencing.

I prefer dogs. I've got a 70 pound German Shepherd. Dogs have more vibrant personalities in my opinion.

Very true. Heightening the state's reaction to violent crime should at least be mitigated by decriminalizing a lot of nonviolent offenses, especially victimless ones like drug possession. Imprisoning someone who doesn't really need to be cordoned off from the general population is a waste of taxpayer money.

So what? The alternative is to not send them to prison? We need to lower our prison population, yes, but not by letting people go.

Sets up soapbox.
First, we need to improve our mental health care and quit dumping these people on the street.
Second, we need to improve our vetting system for who can actually buy and carry a gun. Mandatory licenses and a requirement that people take classes and renew their licenses would help. We're still going to have people who have guns who shouldn't, but it would cut down on some of it.
Third, as a nation we need to agree to disagree without escalating into violence. We need politicians and especially the media to quit egging people on with nasty rhetoric.
Steps off soapbox and leaves it for the next person.

I saw that you all are having a heated conversation over here, and I feel that I need to say something.
You know what, CATS ARE THE BEST.

At least cats they dont lie that the only thing they dont hate about you is your food. At least when you be with them you dont need to try to find out whether they are being true to you or not, because obviously, they hate you, and they're making it quite clear to you. Im quite paranoid of human being now, I could not trust anyone of them, so Id rather trust my stray kitties. At least they wont act friendly around me and then turn something else when Im not around(you know, girls are crazy. Never underestimate them). But anyway, I fell in love with the stray cat at my school so much (her name is tsundere <3), I woke up in the middle of night crying when I thought that I wont get to see her again. Luckily she reappeared a week later.
Oh no Im tearing up again thinking of losing her forever. I need to go.

Like people, all cats and all dogs come with different backstories and different personalities. Thinking about our last three dogs (all adopted via Schnauzer rescue) and my last cat:

Boots had obviously been extensively abused, most likely regularly being kicked by a man. She lived in fear all the time we had her and she would act like she was being tortured if you touched her with your foot. She bonded with me and my husband fairly immediately, but her best friends were always our other dogs. Even though we pampered and protected her for six years, she never was able to let go of her fear.

Mollie and Max are our current dogs; we've had them over three years now. Mollie has been with Max all of her life and has been with us over half of her life (we got her when she was 2 and Max was 4). They both bonded with us as soon as we put them in the car to bring them to our house. Mollie loves to cuddle, but does NOT want to be picked up (perhaps being overweight has something to do with that). She despises all other dogs except for Max and almost always barks at anyone besides my husband or me entering the house or grounds, even if she's known them for years. The only exception is my cleaning lady, who brings a small bag of dog treats with her when she comes to do the cleaning. Both dogs know her and her husband's names. When I tell the two that they have arrived, they go into an excited frenzy. After the two have gotten their materials out of the car, I usually let Mollie and Max bolt out the front door to go greet them. Mollie also has an odd separation anxiety. Even though I've been home all day usually, when my husband returns home from work, she begins crying and wailing and screaming as soon as she hears the garage door going up. You'd think she'd been in solitary confinement for weeks! (She also does that for me when my husband has been home and I arrive, or when I leave the house to run errands and return after a short period of time).

Max is the best dog ever! He loves EVERYONE and gets along well with other dogs. He usually only barks when Mollie gets him excited by something or when the doorbell rings. Mollie is a miniature schnauzer and Max is a standard schnauzer; Max weights about 40 lbs., but still wants to be a lap dog. His preferred posture for sleeping and cuddling is stretched ALLLLLL the way out, with his hind legs out back and his paws reaching straight out in front. He is a joy to be around. We have two doggie doors installed, so they can go outside into the pool area and fenced-in side yard at will. Boots also had the doggie doors, but would not go outside if it was raining, so she would end up using the marble tile as her bathroom. Max and Mollie ALWAYS go outside to do their doggie business, regardless of the weather. While Mollie loves her dog toys and loves to play fetch (or to wrestle with you when you try to take the toy out of her mouth), Max shows little interest in toys, except he will sometimes tease Mollie by running and getting HER toy before she can get to it. THEN Mollie's temper really comes out with snarling and growling and trying to pry the toy away from Max. They are probably together 90-95% of the time.

My last cat (my husband is allergic to cats so I can't have one any more) made it to 17.5 before kitty Alzheimer's took her away from me. She was the princess of the house. She usually demanded to be admired and stroked when visitors came to the house. If you would hold a hair brush stationary for her, she would brush herself (especially her face) for as long as you would hold it. She was also a very chatty kitty and had a large vocabulary of sounds and knew even more human words. My husband had never really been around an indoor cat before and was amazed at how much personality she had. If I sat down, it would only take a few seconds before she would jump into my lap and I would have to start rubbing her. She came to bed with me every night, although she often didn't stay the whole night. She recognized the sound of my car's engine as I would approach the house and would jump on top of the chair beside the door and I would see her little grey face peeking at me through the venetian blinds. It's been a little over ten years now since she died and I still miss her.

...We are all human beings... Stop playing yourselves like cards in a deck... LGBT, Straight.. You're all human... Get over yourselves..

Hey everyone, this is my sister singing at a an event at her school. She is legally blind, and the pianist that is accompanying her is totally blind. It would mean a great deal if you all could watch and share it with your friends and have them share it with their friends.

I'm trying to get it seen by as many people as possible, to show her that she is a good singer (she thinks her performance was bad). Plus also its something happy to break the sadness of the past week.

Heh.

That's just it, though. We're all dealt a hand in life, with some combinations less advantageous than others, but there is always the possibility that the cards we carry will suit the circumstances, especially now that we've gotten as far as we have. Now is not the time to fold. Now's the time to call - to call for change in a society that, even ten years ago, didn't know jack about the people they called queens, or worse. I say that every person is a sovereign, every man a king, no matter the various aspects of their identities. Sadly, there will always be people who go all in on hateful, violent, and ignorant beliefs. I bet that will never change.

As for me, though? I'm not worried. What room is there for worry when you've got the ace of hearts? ;)

And the day when all humans are treated equally and with respect is the day we will no longer need to use those cards, but currently that deck tends to be stacked against anyone who isn't a white Anglo Saxon protestant who is heterosexual.

That chap would drive into a town, call a couple of random people over to his taxi, shoot them in the face then drive on to the next town. He started one morning and it took until the small hours of the following day for the police to corner him.

I didn't link this in my own head as a "gun massacre" with parallels to the US as he didn't just turn up to a school/public place one day & shoot everyone nearby until he killed himself/was taken out by police.

However, I'm not going to spit hairs on this (as I'm not going to waste hours of my life arguing about it). One such instance in the last 20 years (that wasn't a terrorist attack) is rather better than the US tally.
