Hands down, Gulf coast beaches are the best. I absolutely love Clearwater. And there are some great spots just south of Sarasota, too. Being in Orlando, the Atlantic is slightly closer. But I'm not too fond of Cocoa Beach. If I go Atlantic, I like to drive up to New Smyrna. Maybe even Daytona if it isn't too rowdy :)

That's too funny a coincidence - I went to Rollins 08-12.

i have to disagree with my friend here...without a doubt the Atlantic has the better beaches, now im not saying the gulf coast aint got nice beaches, hell, all of Florida has nice beaches....but the Atlantic just has em beat.

I mean from South Beach to Daytona....you just can't compare to that. Every one knows that. Haulover beach, Miami Beach Sunny Isles Beach ft.lauderdale beach, Palm beach daytona.....all those are really nice.

and it all depends on what you want....being unbiased as opposed to my post before. I hear the gulf coast has a lot of places to stay and a lot of nice flat beaches and its safer for kids. The beaches like clear water are great. In the Atlantic as i am familiar with, they have waves and not so flat beaches and really white sand and it has a lot of places to stay and eat (as do the gulf coast) and the night life activity on the East Coast is more livelier.....even in boring old West Palm Beach.

Can someone give a more factual point on the Gulf im trying not to be biased.

But i prefer the Atlantic.

It really is to each his/her own and it's all about preferences. I grew up in Miami and am well familiar with South Beach. I loved going to Crandon Park and Bill Baggs on weekends with the family. You're right about the waves. The Atlantic has the Gulf beat on that. But here are my two issues:

1. At least in the South Beach/Miami areas, the sand quality is poor. Most of it is actually imported. It's not like many of the beaches on the Gulf side, which the sand there appears almost cleaner and 'silkier'.

2. If you're going to South Beach, be ready to party and mingle with a ton of people. If that's your thing, go for it. Personally, I like a quieter setting...and the combination of a smooth water in the Gulf makes it more appealing for me (at least at my age...you'd think I was 60+ when I'm only 33!).

Really at the end of the day, there's no 'better side' of FL. Both coasts offer great options. And let's not forget the Keys! There are some great little secret spots that you can enjoy, too! Gotta love that island feel you get when you're down there :)
