World Factbook Entry

The white giant of a Dark Continent, damned root and branch for achieving by far the greatest accomplishments in Africa on all sectors of living standards, education, medical care, and other amenities for its people.

Faced with revolution in the streets, strikes, civil unrest and the rampant terrorism practised by Nelson Mandela's African National Congress (ANC), the old South Africa capitulated on 27 April, 1994.

If the land had prospered, created jobs and grown strong,
We would have to concede, that the battle had been wrong.
Now we know for what we fought was just and right,
'Cause the people are in such a terrible plight.

Excerpt from South Africa slides into anarchy - Fearful South Africans speak out - by Dr. Martin Bass

Right now crime is out of control in South Africa. And it knows no boundaries. Criminals do not discriminate in terms of race, religion, or any other boundary...except that life has no value. If you have something they want, they will take it from you by force, usually lethal. Criminals use the element of surprise in their attacks. This makes self-defence quite tricky. One has to be on guard 24-7. Some of the highest alert times are:

• Stopped at a red light. At night, if no traffic danger exists, we usually just slow down for red lights or stop signs due to fear;

• At the bank;

• Entering or leaving one's house;

• Packing or unpacking the car;

• All the time at night.

It has come to the point now where people seldom leave their house after dark, if at all possible. Women rarely go anywhere alone, even during daylight. People live in fear and paranoia (60 percent according to the Guardian-ed.).

We employ heavy measures of securing ourselves and our families: 6 ft. concrete and barbed wire fences with electric wires on top, alarm systems, infrared beams inside and outside the house, and 24-hour armed security firms patrolling the neighborhoods. Tactics that criminals employ include:

• A person secretly deflates a tyre at a red light, and his colleagues overpower you when you pull over to fix it;

• A person covertly scouts travelers arriving at the airport, seeing who converts large sums of money, and tails them to their hotels, either forcing them off the road on the way there or jumping them at the hotels;

• A person brazenly shoots you point blank at a stop sign and takes your car;

• A friend of mine was held at knife point in a park where he and his girlfriend had a picnic on a Sunday afternoon;

Criminals commit housebreaking by forcing open gates, circumnavigating electric fences, tunneling under walls, and even lifting roof tiles to gain access to a house.

A young man was beaten over the head with a brick and all the assailant took was a cell phone and a very small amount of cash (approximately $2 if converted). The victim died of his wounds two days later in the hospital. Life has no meaning. And the police are too backlogged or corrupt to solve most crimes, the South African who wishes to remain anonymous said.

Here is a personal incident that happened to my wife and me a few years ago (when I was still under the impression of "it won't happen to me"):

I arrived home after dark. I didn't have the 6-ft. metal gate motorised yet, so I had to get out and manually open it to access the yard. I parked the car inside my property. My wife came out to greet me, and I turned to go close the gate. At that time, I heard a semiautomatic pistol cock and saw two figures running into the yard, crouching. The distance from me to the gate was only four metres, so before I knew it, my wife and I were forced to the ground. They took everything we had on us. We have a 24-hr. armed security firm patrolling our neighbourhood, but they had just left our street.

I also had left my snub nose .38 Special with my wife, because she was home alone at night while I was out. She didn't bring it out with her when she came to greet me. Thankfully they did not hurt, rape, or kill us; they were too much in a hurry to leave. God smiles on us that day.

That happened way too quickly to react to without any sort of training. Basically, in South Africa you can become the victim of violent crime in a heartbeat. No warning, no nothing. If you are not 100 percent aware of your surroundings at all times, when (not if) it happens to you, it's the last day of your life, came under report by Elliot's relative living in South Africa.

You probably want to know why we attended your emigration seminar, a South African wrote to Elliot. Two blocks from where we live, our friend Joop (32 years old) returned home in his car, to have his wife and ten-year-old daughter come out to greet him. Three [gangsters] ran in from the road before the gates closed. They blew the child's head off with a shotgun (12 bore) in front of Joop and Belinda; they held him while they raped her; then they cut his throat and stole the car. We expect to have our papers to leave within a year, and until then we live in fear.

A woman wrote to tell me that her husband had lost his job; she had been replaced at work because she was white (affirmative action); their teenage daughters were constantly being harassed by thugs and lived in fear of being raped/murdered; and they didn't have enough money to emigrate. So her husband committed suicide in order for them to get the life insurance money so they could leave the country.

We asked Elliot about the status of South Africa's gun laws and the death penalty.

It is increasingly difficult to own a gun (especially if you're white), and gun laws have become draconian, Elliot said.

You can have someone eliminated for 100 Rand ($14 USD) and buy a gun on the street for 150 Rand ($21 USD). The death penalty has been abolished to protect the murdering hordes. Many convicted criminals buy their way out of jail within days - money buys anything you want, Elliot said.

Glad I left that behind me but I still worry about my loved ones trapped in that hellhole.
