@ Anollasia; Syria and Iraq are situated inside the EBU, but neither of their state broadcasters are members of the organization. They're probably eligible if they meet the requirements. I assume Israel's participation would cause a problem though, since to participate in Eurovision you're required to send the full broadcast. That's what kept Lebanon from participating back in 2005.

@ Evil Lord Sauron; If Australia wins in 2015 they get to participate in 2016. The competition will be hosted in an EBU country though, with whom Australian brodcaster will cohost.

It's fine that Australia can join in, but calling it Eurovision can be confusing when you have nations from outside Europe competing.

But it's organized by the European Broadcasting Union. Besides it lets us have these delightful discussions about which nations are eligible for participation in Eurovision and why. :P Australia cannot usually join though. It's an on-off event this year because they've always been so excited about Eurovision.

Might be the only way the UK ever gets to host it!

Eh. I just wonder how many people are going to confuse Australia with Austria.

It's their own fault, Evil Lord Sauron. The UK is so busy sneering at Eurovision that they never send anything decent. And then they're surprised they don't win. ;)

Slovenia and Slovakia are easier to confuse, imo.

Yeah. But Austria and Australia was the obvious pairing.

Hey I think 80% of the population would like us to send a serious entry. I can't remember the last time we did.

Not sure you should want to host. There's an ongoing scandal in Denmark over how much last year's Eurovision cost. It evidently ended up being a lot more expensive than expected. :P

Don't worry when UKIP win the elections and we leave the EU we shall be flush with cash... allegedly. *rollseyes* We'll easily be able to fund it then.

Well inflaction isn't really a good thing. And those kind of parties in Europe are my deepest fear, hating parties without a real strategy, thinking that a government is some sort of wizard who can resolve problems.

Ananke wonder what you think of this view:

Will there still be a Eurovision in 10 or 15 year's time if the anti-EU parties popping up everywhere in the last few years gain more power?

For the record, I am pro-EU because I think as a geopolitical bloc they help to moderate the behavior of other superpowers.
