Conspiracy theories illustrate how well relatively intelligent people can fool themselves. If their assertions are challenged, they can always cook up another theory without having to account for the fact that their theories have been debunked. Two libertarians, Penn & Teller, actually do a great job illustrating why conspiracy theories are bull$%!#:

Short technical explanation: The most popular 9/11 theory (controlled demolition) is nonsense because the amount of explosives and placement required to bring down skyscrapers (many times larger than the biggest demolition job done in the past) would require the building to be gutted and thousands of people to be working nearly 24/7 for months. There is no way that tens of thousands of people going to work everyday would not notice such an operation, let alone be able to work in a building with half of its interior torn out. (Based on 6 years of engineering experience, ms aerospace & mechanical eng.)

The implication by the conspiracy theorists then is that all those people who either died on September 11, 2001 or lost friends and colleagues were involved in a major atrocity. Not only is that notion ridiculous, it slanders the names of people who lost their lives or loved ones. There are very few things more upsetting than seeing a widow or child of one of the victims have to hear that their family member is alive and working for some "shadowy government organization." It may be a game to the conspiracy nuts, but to the family members of victims this sort of crap is incredibly cruel.
