The proper way to approach space is threw and asimoviam philosophy.
First we must build the basic space ship and created asteroid bases to harvest metals while we research hyper-travel assistance. Once this is done we can travel at roughly average to the speed of light and thus be able to colonize nearby systems. The asteroid settlements and mining area are already practically moving spaceships and so the people on board will easily be able to have decade long space trips. And then the final step will be true access to hypers space so that ships can spread out to all corners of the Galaxy.
