Without him, North America would be more like Europe and one wouldn't necessarily have to deal with him if they were in the Confederate States of America or some other North American country.

FDR is a kind of a mixed bag. He was indeed a disaster for the economy and an impediment to the recovery from the market crash. That said, he was the right man to command the armed forces during World War II. That puts him light years ahead of the current occupant of the White House. If someone was to attack Pearl Harbor today, Obama would be giving press conferences the next day apologizing to who did it.
