I've said it before and I'll say it again, not giving AI the ability to reason is an exceptional waste of innovation potential. Just as we built machines to replace animal muscle power, so too should we build computers to replace flawed human brain power.
So give the computer a database of information with knowledge of that associated subject. Giving them complete artificial intelligence with the full shabang of human understanding and emotion is basically only useful for creating creative-type robots. We could only expand robotics so far until we start creating mechanical hipsters, and nobody wants that.
Now, i agree that robotics should never be given emotion. That's a mistake. But preventing machines the ability to reason and improve itself is wasting their potential.
I agree so long as we limit the scope of said self-improvement. We want a heart surgeon robot? Okay, his parameters limit him to learning things related to the heart and procedures that benefit humans and end ailments. I don't see why we should even consider giving a cold unfeeling AI the ability to self-improve itself without limit.
That's petty, but it just reminds me why my people have a grudge against a lot of nations :}

I actually started writing a paper that talks about that. Something along the lines of how automation of the workforce will eventually lead to socialist revolt.
The rise of self-production with continuing decrease of cost of 3D printers manufactured goods could, in theory, be entirely constructed from purchased raw materials. In such a scenario, the concept of value for manufactured goods minimizes to the point of near non-existence. In such a scenario, robots take control of all large-scale things, but with all utilities, necessities, and some comfort items being replaced with 3D printers and the internet, robots would only service to mine out the raw resources for use. The question becomes, would production itself scale down back to the local level? In theory, since robots can brave situations lethal or undesirable to humans, it seems possible.
Currency becomes pointless and then we get into some real fun territory after that. Without a monetary system, would governments really be necessary?
Basically, global Communism naturally evolved and selected for as predicted. I mean, this assumes there won't be a Luddite/Socialist revolt that maintains some semblance of the status quo and that the world's resources could eventually be recycled 100%. So, it's unsustainable, even if assuming 100% renewable resources. We'd have to start colonizing other worlds in a post-industrial post-capitalist age.

The issue with that is that creative work, scientific work, and work dealing with the psyche/ interpersonal relations would still have value.
Exceptionally creative, intelligent, and charismatic people would still have to be compensated for their work which is impossible to recreate in machine form.
Self-fabrication eliminates the functional need for interpersonal relations. As stated, the value of manufactured goods drops dramatically and the value of raw goods is also minimal on count of the rapid efficiency of our cheaply made mechanically produced mechanical producers. Interactions with the tribe becomes a commodity, not a necessity and creativity is always a commodity.
People wouldn't need money in this crazy future timeline, because every individual and every community is self-sustained with raw goods taken from robots and whatnot. Being isolated is a dangerous side-effect of the proposed future, raw goods would still need a transportation system and there isn't a clear way I can project how that's gonna work itself out without a transition involving mass death or a wide disconnect between communities where some live up to 22nd century standards and others party like it's 1895.
