Nation of the Week: Violence solves nothing

"The large but sluggish Violence Solves Nothingian economy, worth 134 trillion doves a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. The industrial sector is led by the Book Publishing industry, with significant contributions from Trout Farming, Tourism, and Cheese Exports. Average income is 33,914 doves, and distributed extremely evenly, with practically no difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

"Refugees from other nations are flocking to Violence Solves Nothing's border, citizens are expected to be proficient in at least five languages, it is illegal for police officers to carry out searches due to strict privacy laws, and tourists from around the world come to visit the country's famous rainforests. Crime is totally unknown. Violence Solves Nothing's national animal is the dove, which soars majestically through the nation's famously clear skies."

You guys are some publishing powerhouses. I congratulate your region on this fine achievement.

Congratulations on reaching 5th place IN THE WORLD.

I was wondering if we have a recruitment message?

We're 34th as a region

Matussia wrote:I was wondering if we have a recruitment message?

I haven't tried to recruit since the beginning. It was done manually then. I spotted a likely newbie in one of the Pacifics and invited them to join. Not much success from that approach but some people found us anyway.

The message would have been simple because I had to type it every time - this was 2007. Something like:

"Come join us in the Maritimes - a friendly region. You will be welcome here." Then instructions on how to join.

Initially our members came for the most part from the real-life Maritimes, but that changed over time. People heard about us somehow.

Well maybe if we had one we might be able to revive the maritimes, i'm not saying any big changes but maybe a few young nations. The only way I found the maritime was through dumb luck.

Dumb luck is good.

Revive? The most nations we've ever had is 46 and that was a couple of weeks ago. We're niw at 44. For most of our history we were happy with 28.

I'm not poo-pooing your idea. Far from it. But these days recruitment is more technically involved and I don't know how it works. If you, or anyone else, can take charge of it, great. On we go. Personally, I don't mind us as we are, but others may well feel differently.

Yes but as someone said (I can't remember who) most nations here have retired.

I keep my nation going out of sentiment, that's true. This region represents where I was born and bred. Because I don't post often doesn't mean I'm not paying attention. That must be true for others.

We're still the 265th largest region in NationStates. How do other Canadian-themed regions do? Last time I looked at Canada - there's a stirring name - it wasn't especially active and didn't remind me much of Canada.

When you get a recruitment telegram does it make you want to run off and join up? I find them annoying because I'm already where I want to be.

That's why you only send telegrams to brand new nations, not to everyone or people that have already moved out of one of the Pacifics.

"Canada contains 151 nations, the 72nd most in the world."

It hit the doldrums for awhile but I've just looked in and it now seems a happy, active place, full of Canada Day messages. Does it advertise to all and sundry in NationStates? I don't know.

I'm reasonably happy with our region as it is, but of course would like to have more active posters here, if possible. For that to happen someone has to take charge of recruitment. It can't be me because I neither have the time nor know-how to do it.

I would just use copy and paste to send to as many brand new nations in the pacific every two days or so. It's difficult to do it manually though.

I actually would just look at the world activity to see the new nations, but I would only send to nations that look mature (no S**tposters).

Why don't we have an embassy with canada?

Try and see what happens.

Why don't we have an embassy with canada?

Every time we vote on this people have said we should only exchange embassies with a few close friends, i.e. people we know well. We can discuss it again.

Each Uisge is ranked 41st in The Maritimes and 103,420th in the world for Largest Publishing Industry, scoring 0 on the Bella Potter Productivity e-Index.

I was in Canada (different nation) for a while a few years ago but i left and came here. I was looking for a Canadian region at the time and stayed. Not very active on the RMB, more so on the forum. And yes I'm one of those semi-retired nations. Having played this game for 10 plus years, i keep my nations here alive out of nostalgia.

Now that said if newer player want to get active i have no problems with that.
Recruiting manually is hard work, i took a region form 50 nations to 300 nations. The work start after you have recruited, as you have to keep them interested and active.

Embassies too are hard work if you want to use them properly. You need a ambassador to go to that region and be active there also. Other wise you we be know as an embassy collector, which many regions avoid.

This is just my 2 cents worth, or i guess it is a nickles worth now a days.
You either agree or don't, no worries.

Spot on, Each Uisge. A big region takes maintenance and if it depends on one or two people, as it usually does, and they have jobs, that's hard to do. So the more people who get involved the better, and having some younger, keen players is a help. I don't care about the numbers game, but we don't want to become a museum region either where no-one ever posts.

The Highest Average Tax Rates in The Maritimes

Although some nations have similar tax rates for all citizens and others tax the rich much more heavily than the poor, the following provides a rough guide to the most taxing governments.

As a region, The Maritimes is ranked 1,284th in the world for Highest Average Tax Rates. There are 18,359 regions.

1.Sedelh (92)
2. Kalix (213)
3. Toney River (821)
4. Nouvelle-Acadie (1,022)
5. Centre Street (1,028)

22. Podemos (21,832) Middle Nation

44. Economic Invincibility (128,723 of 128,865)

World first: Corsaria (Katasia)

World last: Northern Borland (Capitalist Paradise) - Little Flowers (Eladen) 4th from bottom

That's sorta what I'm trying to avoid, at this rate that could happen in just a couple months, but the numbers game doesn't matter.

I would be willing to stay active in canada, maybe post every week, y'know just stop by every once and a while maybe have a few conversations, y'know just casually drop in.

Thank you thank you!

What? You would be based here but go there from time to time?

Kalix and Each Uisge mentioned embassies.

As Each Uisge explained, to collect embassies is pointless - without value - and to have a proper relationship you should have an ambassador. That's the old way of doing it, anyway. We exchange ambassadors with Nudist Dreamland, Philosophy 115 and Universal Dream Network. But most regions don't do this any more.

As Kalix said, we've discussed several times increasing the number of regions we have embassies with. At the beginning - before Kalix - we had an embassy with Ontario and tried to establish ones with Québec and Nova Scotia. These regions failed. If there are regions with those names now they're not the ones we knew. The last time I dealt with a region calling itself Québec, they couldn't even speak French! Still, we should look at our embassies policy again, especially at the region of Canada and any other Canadian-themed regions that have been around for more than five minutes.

When you have embassies you can speak in their RMB so I would just stop by a chat in there every once and a while.

That is true if the WA of the region you have embassies in, has given permission to post on their board. Alas not all WA do this. I have seen permissions pulled because of unsavory remarks.
I have no problem if you want to try this, in fact i would encourage it.
