Wouldn't it be nice if we could determine both first and last place in the same poll?

Even since I've been given polling authority, I've gotten interested in different voting systems and the weaknesses of plurality voting, but there's not much I could really do about it, as NationStates just doesn't support anything else. While I can happily calculate the results myself, I still need some way to track actual votes, and NationStates's format makes that impractical for non-trivially-sized polls. Even 4 options would already have 24 possible rank orderings (and that's not even allowing equal rankings), which is too many to list out as individual options (NationStates's maximum is 12), and it only climbs factorially from there (5 options means 120 rank orderings and 6 options means 720, which is ridiculous).

But then, for a fun proof-of-concept demonstration, a trivially-sized poll may be enough. It would have to have exactly three candidates, though. And, conveniently, our last best pony poll (by our esteemed founder) shamefully neglected to include the Cutie Mark Crusaders as options. So now, finally, their time has come!

You'll find the poll above.

This will be more fun if we have as many (legit) votes as possible, so I'm opening this one up to other regions like Equestria. I'm also letting it run double-length.

I considered asking beforehoof whether anypony else here actually cares about voting systems, but then I figured it's easier for the people who don't care to just ignore me, rather than wasting time asking around whether I should waste anyone's time :)

No it doesn't, but I searched and found this one --> http://www.angelfire.com/ut/Xellena/Dian15.html There are several pages on that site you can choose from.

Exactly! That's whay we were in different regions. Have no fear, I will depart within a day or two.

What sort of activities are you looking for?

Magical equestria wrote:What sort of activities are you looking for?

Oh. I think you know. ;)

Chess.

Or for those of you who wanted the tl;dr version: Sweetie Belle won by a landslide.

Sweet Celestia m8. You do this for fun? I mean, that's fine if so; do what makes you happy. But really... dang.

Got the Grand Prix issue:

Following new legislation in New Equestria, Leader is adamant that ponies aren't just for little girls.

Conveeeeersation.

Holy hell, I did a degree in economics and this is off the chain. I voted for Borda though, even though I know there are better systems, because it's the closest to the Eurovision method - which I have a soft spot for!

Everyone having left because we didn't have much activity probably contributes to us not having much activity.

Voted random because I like randomness.

You know you guys have completely forgotten about the Majority Gain Vote, Where the party with the most vote wins regardless of initial voting quote.

What about some sort of selection by hierarchy? Wherein the "winner" is selected by an individual or group thereof, regardless of popular opinion or votes.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean. "The party with the most votes wins" accurately describes plurality voting, but I have no idea what you mean with "initial voting quote", and I couldn't find any other references for the term "Majority Gain Vote".

Well, if you have a council, then you still need some voting method for when the council members disagree. Voting doesn't necessarily have to be open to the general public. Many of the same considerations apply to elections with many or few voters, except that elections with fewer voters are more likely to end up being tied (ranked pairs and IRV in particular can get kind of crazy in such edge conditions).

But yeah, if you have a dictatorship where only one person's opinion is ever given consideration, that makes things a lot easier.

Problem is that when the dictator disregards public opinion too much, they tend to start voting with bullets.

Also, you need to have some mechanism to choose a dictator to begin with. Even if it's just having been appointed by the previous dictator, but you can't rely on circular reasoning forever.

That's the charm of the random ballot method: one voter is randomly selected to act as the dictator for that election, so you get all of the advantages of having a dictator, without actually allowing the same dictator to keep wielding power until it goes to his head.
