An interesting question when we outlaw forms of discrimination -

Must a Jewish Baker Make a Nazi Cake?

Dr george wrote:As he was the father of modern sociology, he would likely be more read in sociological classes/circles than those of philosophy.
A course on him could be (and probably is) as a senior seminar undergrad or going a bit deeper into him.
I think a 500-level course on him, perhaps just entitled Philosophy of Sociology. Perhaps it could be team-taught by a philosopher, a sociologist, and a political scientist.
Is there a Philosophy of Durkheim for Dummies out there? Anybody?

School of Life did a short video on him.

The platocracy

May I suggest founding a defense force? No attacking or anything, but we need to have some sort of protection.

We have an active founder. Most raiders will avoid such a region.

What is your philosophy in how you run your nation? Do you have a particular goal for which you're aiming? Would you like to live in your nation if it was a real place? Are three or more questions in a row too many? ;)

We are completely safe as we are. With an active Founder and a non-Executive WAD, the worst they could do is seize Central K's seat briefly, then I or one of the other officers would banject the usurper and his cronies. They would have to send 10+ WA nations to surpass (and naturally keep), so maybe to increase our regional census by 10+ WA nations, we would allow them to keep the delegacy.

I use several different philosophies within my 60+ nations. Most of them are high freedom (like NONNY), maxxing out all three major categories (Civil Rights, Economy, and Political Freedom) at 100%. Most of these nations (with the stinky exception of Haunted roller coaster) also strive to have a green environment, so that takes several economic options of the table, so their Economies won't grow as fast. In NONNY's case, he is #1 in the world for Highest crime rates, so he intends to hold onto that trophy. He is also in the top 10 for Most Armed, Most Cultured, and Publishing. Most of these nations float back and forth between Civil Rights Lovefest and Anarchy.

Several of my nations strive for different governmental types. Others try to emulate the positions of a certain government or party or individual. Others are governed by the Dark Side, including Buer the demon and The emperor for life. Most of the Benders were my attempt to create a template that would emulate NONNY. Spender bender only differs from Son of benderbot

Euharmonia

(sorry about the accidental carriage return) in one respect, spending. Spender is attracted to anything that allows him to spend money, while Son of Benderbot strives to keep a 0% tax rate. That one variable out of so many was so significant to the outcome was unanticipated by me. @Bizzaro Bot has exactly the opposite programming from Son of Bender.

(AGAIN! ARRRGH!) and stays pretty consistently at Iron-Fist Consumerist. A couple of my nations are low freedom across-the-board, aiming for (0,0,0), which is surprizingly hard to get to.

Back in Ye Olden Dayes, Dr george was a utopian experiment to see if I could get my freedoms and economy up to at least World Benchmark, have a NHS, have a minimum wage, have no crime, free college, have a good environment, etc. I achieved that and stopped answering issues for several years. The along came refactoring and suddenly I had a tax rate and crime again. I tried for a long time to recreate the Dr George of old, but I haven't been able to do it thus far; I suspect it cannot be done any more.

Nw hell rehab center and I both created programs to emulate hippies. My intention was that he would eventually become and stay a Left-Wing Utopia, but, surprisingly, he's spent much of his life as an Inoffensive Centrist Democracy! It turned out he was choosing left-wing freedoms, but banning right-wing freedoms.

So, there are many, many ways to decide the right answer for a given dilemma, although be warned, some issues do NOT yield results that would be implied in the writeup. Part of the challenge of NS is learning how the different choices affect you

This might have been asked already but what classification (Iron-fist consumerist) do you think fits your ideals the best? I entered NS thinking I'd be pretty centre and ending up on most of my nations as rather left wing!

I have 3 nations. One is trying to be as free as can be, one is a socialist utopia, and one is a satire of Australian Politics. I would have to say The Platocracy is my favorite.

I run my nation much as I would rule a realm - except I try to keep in mind that I am merely an ambassador here, so I feel I should try to maintain good relations with my region mates, as opposed to blasting them to hell with heavy artillery. I like to think they appreciate that.
I don't really have a goal, other than to promote good will, drink mimosas, eat muffins, and hug assorted citizens of other nations inthis region. I think they appreciate that, too. I notice they don't object when offered mimosas and muffins.
Yes, i would like to live in my nation. Are you suggesting I don't live in my nation? You don't mean to imply that this isn't reality, do you? Here, have one of my special brownies. You too can live in this fantasy.
No, you can ask as many questions as you wish. We're philosophers. We like to question things. We also like to answer questions at great length.

There are no objectively right or wrong answers on NS, just a matter of choice.

You can be high freedoms or low freedoms.
You can be industrialized or green (or industrialized AND green!)
You can be conservative or liberal.
You can be Utopian or Dystopian.
You can be hellish or heavenly.
You can be geenerous or stingy.
You can be educated or stupid.
You can be scientifically advanced or Primitive.
You can be a raider or a defender.

It's all up to you!

Thanks for the brownie, Visiting Queendom of Myself!

I'm trying to run my nation as one in which I would ideally like to live -- although perhaps I do live there. :)

In the case of this nation, you can be vicious AND compassionate! And the citizens don't care - they're all sedated.

Euharmonia

Greetings! Today was the beginning of Euharmonia's annual Bardic Festival. It is a week devoted to music, poetry, and the plays of William Shakespeare. This piece, Pini di Roma by Ottorino Respighi, is a perennial favorite here (we have a lot of pine trees in Euharmonia) and we invite you to enjoy it too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYHDr2epOTg
Anyone have any particular favorites when it comes to music, poetry, or the works of the Immortal Bard?

Arianrhode

We often played The Pines of Rome in symphonic bands. The trombone part is ludicrously boring!

Euharmonia

It's good to over the 200 mark!!!

Euharmonia wrote:What is your philosophy in how you run your nation? Do you have a particular goal for which you're aiming? Would you like to live in your nation if it was a real place? Are three or more questions in a row too many? ;)

My goal is simply to follow my own personal beliefs (as I continue to inform them) and to see where that takes me.

- high freedoms

- liberal
- Utopian
- heavenly (if that's even a thing)
- generous
- educated
- scientifically advanced
- defender (although I dent generally get involved in this aspect, raiders are just plain and simple bullies)

Are you a trombonist too?

Euharmonia

I am. I haven't played in many years now.

Czechostan and Euharmonia

As am I, although I too haven't played in a number of years.

I'm an active player and have a concert tomorrow. But I've had so much testing, I've played most of the songs less than 4 times. Wish me luck.

Dr george

Good luck!

Mcrone wrote:so im new could someone tell me what do do

Dr George should be able to give you a good run-down.

When answering issues, you may want to consult "solved issues" websites that display the change in stats (i.e., happiness, inclusiveness, rudeness, health, etc. [click on the rank tab on your nation's homepage to see them]) they received.
http://nssolvedissues.blogspot.com/
However, websites like this shouldn't be interpreted as gospel. The change in stats may be more or less significant depending on your nation's current state (political freedoms, economy, civil rights, happiness, etc.). For example, pro-democracy legislation has a greater rise in nations with lower political freedoms than nations with higher political freedoms. Also, a few of the stats weren't yet implicated when some of these "solved issues" sites were created.
