The liberated territories

Economics overlaps with philosophy a fair deal. Milton Friedman, for example, supported gay marriage, which isn't much of an economical position to take.

Supply and demand. Enough said.

I know you have heard this before...

Magna libero wrote:How are they not libertarians? And how is David Friedman not a libertarian? If we aren't going strictly by philosophers...

They are libertarians. But I don't see how they're philosophers.

By that same logic, Watson and Crick are philosophers. Friedman and Murphy are economists - they're social scientists. Not every form of technical thinking qualifies as philosophy.

The new sea territory

I think Lysander Spooner is the best. He's an individualist anarchist, but that's still under the umbrella term "libertarian".

He quit.

He's still alive. No lung cancer.

Mirule wrote:How much is in a "pack"? I mean I've hung around people who can go through an ounce or so in a day, but not every day because seriously who has that kind of money?

20 cigarettes in a pack.

So 20 for me (varies with activities), 140 for that other dude.

She advocated a limited nights watchmen state, so, sure, she had the un-libertarian characteristic of not being an ancap, but, by that logic, Milton Friedman (who was quite a lot less libertarian than Rand) should also not be considered. Same goes for minarchist Mises.

I consider minarchists too moderate, but still say they are libertarian. However, Ayn Rand had way to many authoritarian sympathies and hated...HATED...anarchism.

Ayn Rand advocated for egoist-esque philosophy, and minimal libertarianism. She is not a good example of libertarianism.

Mirule wrote:Honestly, I've never been particularly close to anyone who can afford to burn ~£300 a day just on recreation.

Your sin taxes are criminal.

Here, now, they are a tad under $5. So that's $5 for me. Probably back when the dude smoked 7, they were $2.50 or so. So $17.50 for him.

Not the $512 you are talking about.

140? How long does a cigarette take to smoke? 5 minutes?

Could someone enlighten me -- I lost track? Are you talking about weed or tobacco?

I don't see how Ayn Rand is any less libertarian than Milton Friedman?

According to her libertarianism is her worst enemy. So I don't think that would make her a libertarian, does it?

Ayn Rand didn't like libertarians because she thought they were unprincipled. In her view, she had presented a rigorous philosophy (Objectivism), and the libertarians of her day had no philosophical basis for their beliefs.

I don't see how Rand was politically any different than mainstream minarchism or mainstream libertarianism?

Cigarettes are tobacco.

Yeah, 5 minutes or so. Depends on how much you talk, how much you puff and how long your drags are. When I take a cigarette break with Tonya, for example, she likes talking. So I can smoke two by the time she finishes.

It's less of politics and more of the fact that because she brought egoism into capitalism, she gives capitalism a bad name.

Augarundus wrote:I don't see how Ayn Rand is any less libertarian than Milton Friedman?

Well, I would say both of them are extremely moderate, and Friedman is preferable because he isn't used to bash all systems of capitalism.

Alright. That's interesting.

I just lost track on how the discussion went from marijuana to tobacco. But, whatever. :)

You (usually) smoke both.

You can vape marijuana. Which makes it much safer and nicer to use.

I've seen a video of a guy smoking a cigarette on one drag. That's crazy. Provably not very healthy either. :P

I've seen those too. Smoking in general is not very healthy.

That's why vaping weed is so great.

I assumed we were talking about weed (you're looking anywhere from £250-300 for an ounce of decent quality). I hadn't even factored the cost of the tobacco into the equation.

Cigarettes you're looking about £8-9 for a 20 deck, depending on brand. So up to maybe £63 a day for your mate. Still pretty expensive for a drug with few interesting effects, but not quite so mental.
