I can (and I will) generalise in that in COIN ops friendly forces more than have the capability to clear an area of enemy forces to allow a MERT or winch to fly in and evac a casualty. I've never known the Taliban to make extensive use of SAMS or effective AA fire. Again, suppressing that (in an ideal situation and conditions) 'can' be routine.
I agree that dedicated MERT teams in a war against, say, Russia or well-armed nation-state would be most unlikely. They're too important/expensive to lose. As for operable kit... no expert but I thought Med Regt landy ambulances were quite well equipped.

Taliban surface to air fire is *usually* limited to AKs, RPGs, and the odd DShK that they've still got around. The Chinese give them some heavier stuff but they're few and far between.

I used to live just north of Miramar. Air show season was awful, but thank god for double and triple paned windows.

Perks of living ON an Army base? None, none whatsoever.

Try a US Marine base. :(

US garrisons weirded me out. Grafenwohr was massive and all centralised, everything catered for so nobody ever really had to leave camp for anything so it was always super busy. Then every evening they'd play 'colours' (We call em colours. That trumpet call) and everyone literally stands to attention and/or salutes - civys n all.
Didn't see much BS though, maybe it was more lax in Graf.

Wanderjar and Greater themis

Went to an army camp in Cadiz, Negros Occidental. That was about 6 years ago.

Greater themis

fave base has to be the NATO command in Lille. Hardly any BS thank goodness. Worst base... any "transit" camp you'll find around the UK. There's a circle of hell that consists of Okehampton and Sennybridge camps...

*Shudders*

Never in my wildest nightmares have I ever been to a place so condemned and devoid of happiness as Sennybridge.

Isn't that SHAPE? Been there, amazing. Though I spent most of my time there saluting people.

Yeah, SHAPE was there for a while IIRC, when I was there it was HQRRC-France. Fantastic place, good bit of history there as well.

Okehampton, the main history was the gas chamber at the gate for delousing people. The upshot at least was a bit of running on the tors; whereas Sennybridge...

Though I've heard the place I'm headed in Scotland is pretty grim. Gallocheaid or somethings like that.

God, Garelochead? I hear the hills (mountains) are... cheeky.

Jihadi training camps just aren't what they used to

Nah that's pretty much how it goes, we call it Colors too though. Worst is when you're trying to get somewhere and the trumpets start and you're just like SH!T! and have to stop, face the flag and salute until its done. YOu'll see some people sprint immediately and try to hide in the nearest building so they don't have to, it becomes a kind of game haha

Been there before, although I think for us it was less a matter of trying to hide so I don't have to, and more an "I need to keep moving and this building gets me closer" and/or "I'M SO CLOSE TO THE BUILDING I NEED!" It really sucks in those circumstances, to be honest, because you can almost feel the deathstares of officers or warrants when you do that.
