I actually completely disagree that homophobes should be ignored. Life is not a serenity meme. They should be called out and shamed every time they utter their disgusting and vile vitriol. Homophobia is a social construct, you don't change people's thoughts by sitting quietly in the dark being noble.

Homophobia is largely dying off, with the exception of the internet, which is a generational problem rather then one we can solve right now - the internet is the "final frontier" of all equal rights because it represents humanity at it's pure core

The internet is humanity's voice, unobstructed by all the other noise like politics and oppression

The internet is like Milton's 'mind': it can make a Heaven of Hell, and a Hell of Heaven. It once was the safe refuge for oppressed people, t find like minds, now it is becoming the last vestige of unkind thoughts, trying to find like minds.

Interesting viewpoints. I read an article somewhere which argued that what we're seeing is greater liberalisation in the West and greater repression in other places like Russia and Africa as a consequence and reaction to this. However I think overall the trend is definitely positive. I do agree that we owe a debt of gratitude to those who broke down barriers at their own expense.

I'm not sure I agree with your portrayal of the Internet PB. People present different facets of themselves in different situations and the Internet is no different apart from having some anonymity to make people be more open perhaps. Also the law is increasingly reaching into the Internet to regulate conduct between individuals. Some aspects of humanity are downright barbaric and cruel and the effect of this on real lives in the real world is an appropriate target for mitigation.

What are people doing this weekend?

That's the beauty of the internet! no bars held, all the problems out in the open and available to be solved!

Solve them on the internet, solve them forever and everyhere

I tend to disagree, the internet is also a place where people can make up their whole life, everything they say might be a lie. who is to say that they aren't what they say they are. There is no way to prove other wise unless you no the person.

Working both days and trying to figure out how I can prepare for my teaching practicum that starts on Monday when my host school hasn't even determined who my sponsor teacher will be, never mind what courses I'll be teaching or anything else.
Given what happened last year, I'm getting the hint that perhaps teaching and I are not supposed to be an item.

na, you're fine. I'm going to a pumpkin patch.

what are you wanting to teach?

Discoveria wrote:What are people doing this weekend?

Sitting on the sofa, under a quilt, hoping someone will offer to make chicken noodle soup because my throat is killing me.

Being ill sucks...

I've been having a chill-out day, listening to music, doing laundry etc. Bought a suit last week that I need to collect tomorrow. I'll have to get a tie and cufflinks as well.

It's a long Labour Day weekend here in NZ, so basically some spring cleanings and off to the partaayy

Otis-T wrote:what are you wanting to teach?

I'm supposed to be teaching high school social studies and history, but I've had a series of uncontrollable fiascoes whenever I attempt to do my teaching practicum.
Most famously, last year my adviser told me to teach the wrong class, so I had a very excellent lesson on the French Revolution that wasn't covered by my students' final exam, and thus I went down the drain.
Now I don't even have an adviser, and I start teaching Monday :P
Having said that, they only bothered getting around to assigning me my placement school on Thursday, so this just feels like it's been not going well...
Damn the strike to hell anyway.

A friend of mine just asked me if I wanted to go trick-or-treating with her and her little sister. Does anyone have any good ideas for quick costumes?

Happy Labour Day weekend to all of our friends in NZ!

Be a bear! If you don't feel like wearing a hot fur pelt, a manly shirt/Levis/worker boots and a cheap (upper) half latex bear mask will be an easy to assemble costume. A beard would help. ;)

A blood transfusion patient. Then go and find where a Jehovahs Witness lives (they do not celebrate Halloween) and trick or treat the karma out of their doorbell.

Fat? No - I've seen the pictures
Ugly? No - I've seen the pictures. (+1 nomination for Hot Guy of the week)
Stupid? No - I've seen the philosophical discussions (and they make my tiny brain hurt)
Paedophile? No - The only 12-year old I can imagine you involving yourself with is a nice single-malt whisky.

How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse
By The Governor The Stalker

I. Begin Reaching the Cure ASAP! Ideally you're gonna wanna be online for Z day as close to the start as possible, and begin researching the cure. Z day runs for 36 hours, so if you arrive within the first 12 hrs you should research the cure.

Cure stages
1) Research begun
2) Some early promising results
3) Potential antibodies discovered
4) Live prototypes developed
5) Developed; some distribution issues
6) Partially deployed
7) Distributing to infected

The longer you research the Cure, the more "cure points" your nation will accumulate.
Nations gain 1 cure point per million survivors per round that you've had the "Research Cure" option activated.
The larger your nation is the more effective you'll be in researching the cure.

***When curing nations, it's best to start by curing small nations first, a nation of 5 million only takes 5 cure missiles. Once a nation is fully cured it rarely gets infected again, making them good foundations in reducing the over all infection level within the region.

II. Mobilize your Military if you arrive late to Z day! If you get here late, less than 24 hrs remain the military may be a better option. Short term killing them is more effective and can keep you afloat at the cost of a high death rate. We wanna keep deaths at a minimum as we will eventually be able to cure Zombies, no bringing the dead back. If enough of our people survive we might make the Z Day Score Board!

Last year's Z Day Score Board
(Last year going pro-zombie we were 17th most infected!)

III. To survive, we'll need a healthy combination of both researching the cure and military defense. If most people do the cure from the start and then have just enough people doing the military option to keep the number of zombies down to prevent them over running us, we will survive Z day. If you have multiple nations in Hell, you may wanna do both options, you can also switch options later on as well.

IV. Don't Export Zombies!! As a region we've decided to see if we can survive Z day, if you choose the join the Zombies option you will hinder our effectiveness and likely annoy me. Elders will get a pass, WAs and regular posters will get scolded, random unknown puppets who do it risk getting ejected. So please don't spoil our fun.

If you particularly wanna join the Zombies, make use of a secondary nation and attack Hell's opponents.
Check out Zombieland for all your pro-Zombie fun. Help our score by lowering others!

V. Important note! Do not leave Hell on Z day! I know many people move in and out of their region on Z day, but Hell is passworded, if you leave it will be a pain to bring you back and may take a while to do. So please do not leave the region, use a secondary nation.

VI. You can attack with multiple nations at a time!! Yes, what many people don't realize is, you can log into one nation per internet browser.

The three main ones being:
Google Chrome
Internet Explorer
Mozilla Firefox

Log into a different nation on each one, line them up side by side on your screen and you can rotate between the three. While one is cool downing down, you can attack with another.

Hammering away with three or more nations will greatly increase your effectiveness. This will also allow you to participate in multiple regions, and a chance to fight the Zombies on one nation while joining the Zombies on another.

Now you're ready to...

KILL THEM ALL!!!

Hey Bearnation that's some really good advice. The only thing I can think to add is that those instructions are based on last year's scenario. There's been a lot of speculation in the forums that there will probably be a few rule changes this year so we should all keep that in mind.

That's pretty good advice. Earlier we'd been advised to focus cure missiles (once given) on the larger nations in Gay: thoughts on that issue?

Thanks for the chicken soup. Does anyone know if zombies feel pain?
