Hm, not in my studies they haven't been, but I am looking at more than just the Snorri and other Christian written books about the gods and mythologies. Not to mention that the Greek tales end up having so many versions! While I have read a comparative study or two, I disagree that Zeus could ever be compared to Odin in all ways. Or any other god/goddess of those mythologies. Certainly Hermes and Loki are worlds apart for being tricksters. Hermes is quite benign.

Also, yay a feast!

In some ways Zeus and Odin are alike being that they are the head honcho of the gods/goddesses in their respected kingdom.

Glad you could join us here in Balder!

Welcome :D

The similarities between these religions, and cultures in general, are probably due to the shared Indo-European heritage, which also blended with the abrahamitic faiths. I read somewhere that the most telling signs are found in language (for instance the words Zeus, Deus and Dev, which all mean god, or main god, in Greek, Latin and Sanskrit).
Also, I remember reading that a lot of viking jewellry and ornaments that are seen as typically nordic were actually brought to the nordic region from the Byzantine Empire through trade.

In actuality, Odin was not always the head honcho, as there's evidence that first Tyr was the head of the gods and then Thor was. Also depending on locality, another god could be more favored, like Frey.

Unlike Zeus, Odin was not the "father" of the gods. He was considered of a higher order, I'm sure, but all the gods had their own named halls in Asgard, and most of them were not blood related to Odin. Odin's origins were not that he was the first either. The Vanir and the Aesir were warring, and after an exchange of "prisoners", they came to a peaceful resolution. I believe Odin is half-Vanir and half-Giant, and it is my belief that he started the Aesir "group" and that was what started the war (but there's no evidence of why the two groups were warring or where they originated from).

I just don't see much Hellenic religious influence on the Asatru religion.

As for the Viking jewelry coming down from Byzantine, that's something I didn't know. I do know that Norse and Celtic art, especially ornamentation and jewelry, is quite alike. So much so most of the time it can't be differentiated.

The state of Kievan Rus, in modern Ukraine, was founded and at first ruled by Vikings traveling and trading southward on the major rivers such as the Don, Dneiper and Volga. Kievan Rus was also directly north of, and much influenced by, the Byzantine Empire so it'd not hard to see Vikings and Byzantines crossing pahs at Kiev.
