Yes that's correct.

I've asked them for a guarantee that my data (and my name is my data) will not be accessed illegally. They can claim all they want at how secure the system is but I want a guarantee that says it's safe. We get guarantees on most new items we buy so isn't it interesting that we don't get them from the Government. If I was holding your data in my house, you'd want a guarantee it was safe, right?

Still waiting for their response.

Why would you bother not doing it?
It's in you best interest to do so.

Why? That's a very long drawn out answer and there's not a soapbox big enough for me. heh

The only human on this planet that can decide what is in my best interest is me. : ) No offense meant.

You use google, yes? or anything online. As long as you've ever filled in your address for an online service, you're at risk.

Google for example knows enough about me that if they wanted to, they could very easily track me down and kill me.

Yes, I totally agree. I have engineered many such services. I have also worked in Canberra.

Consider my effort a real time fight for improved civil rights. My own private dilemma, of sorts.

It is for amusement.

Medicare, ATO, Motor Reg, Centrelink, Electoral Commission and other government departments have your details already. Some even have your bank details.
If you really are worried the government might misplace or sell your data, then they would already have done so with these other departments.

I've worked for DHS in Canberra and possessed the appropriate security clearances to access stuff no FOI request would ever see, so yeah, I know how secure the systems are. Humans are the actual problem.

The thing that bothers me is we appear to have a law that says the Government owns our data and subsequently, us. The data retention time frame change is worrying. Does anyone honestly believe the ABS would protect your data from another department (let's say one interested in national security) should they come waving the appropriate 'authority'; it happens, and you'll never know it happened.

Don't you ever wonder how welfare cheats get caught? Data matching between departments anyone? Better still, let's bundle Medicare, Centrelink, Child Support, DVA and some others into one big department to there's no more restriction to checking details across databases (which there was).

The ABS was DoS'd several times yesterday.

This is why we can't have nice things (like online voting)

Sorry that I haven't been online lately, just had to put my dog down yesterday... catch me up in a simpler way? Also, like my new flag? :D

Guys, don't forget

The last time we did our census (2010) in the US we still used paper forms and I think you had to use a #2 or HB pencil or you would ruin the form.

Oh you're American, then you may not have heard.

The census website was DOS'd on the submission day. Kinda funny.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is reeling this morning after its website crashed last night due to an orchestrated attack on its servers.

A spokesperson for the Australian Bureau of Statistics said that the attack seemed to have been orchestrated by a whole nation of people. “We are currently looking for a nation of roughly 24 million people who could have carried out such an attack.”

The spokesperson said it was clearly a foreign nation. “Australia couldn’t possibly have carried out this attack. According to our latest figures, there are only 4 million people living in Australia.”

Tech experts said that they had never seen such a sophisticated and well organised attempt to flood the servers, using millions of different points of attack.

The experts say the attack was highly organised. “In order to get millions of computers to participate at the same time, the perpetrators harnessed social media to encourage people to flood the servers, and overload the website. This was sophisticated stuff.”

“They announced their attack day months ago, and then worked methodically to make sure everyone remembered the attack date.”

“The perpetrators must have known that no computer server can withstand the load of an entire nation trying to access the same website at the same time on the same day.”
