Global Right Alliance Regional Message Board

Friends, after less than a year, Gay has passed another milestone in membership: overnight we passed the 300-member mark! Please send a TG to help us celebrate this momentous time (or if you would prefer a short visit, that would be most welcome, too)!

Guoh-nian hao! Koex-nii hoir! Ko-nyn h! Qu-năm hiếu!

Happy Chinese New Year! :) I've been having this recent fixation in pie-making.

Did you know there are like two types of rolling pins: the French rolling pin and the rollers you see in cartoons?

I didn't, probably because we have the "cartoony" one at home.

What pies have you been baking?

I haven't actually made any but I have been fantasizing to making one. It would be really great to own a rolling pin since it can be used in other dough-related dishes - ravioli, dumplings, pizza, bread, noodles, chapati. For now, all I'm planning is a yummy basic chocolate banana cream pie. We don't really bake much at home but a nice rolling pin would make a nice addition to the kitchen (and a cure to my recent pie crust making curiosity).

Anyone in the GRA had an experience in the kitchen?

Sounds delicious!

Me and my bf like to bake, although it's usually realtibely simple recipes. We also love making pasta ourselves, even if it sometimes feels like more effort than it's worth.

We are actually planning on making a Nutella cheesecake soon.

Nutella also makes a WONDERFUL gelato!

The Nutella cheesecake is amazing, but also really really filling.

Good to hear about the Nutella cheesecake.

Nutella as a gelato? Sounds overwhelming, at least to me. Then again, I eat a lot of nutella. It's really tasty every once in a while.

As for the pie, still too busy with college to do that but I'm planning in the distant future why not use margarine instead of shortening.
Shortening it turns out, is unhealthy with the whole hydrogenated fat thing. I just need enough stability to allow flakiness of the pie crust.
Having no experience with dough, turns out for pies, one must be really careful in handling the dough.
Too much gluten from excess mixing and too much temperature from the body that can melt the flaking agent which explains why shortening is popular will affect the quality. I've been canvassing for good prices of materials though.

We tend to use butter, partially because the Netherlands is overflowing with dairy products anyway. :p

Being economical while baking can be difficult, but you're likely to already have many of the basic ingredients, like sugar for example.

Don't forget to take your time with baking, and don't overthink it. Make sure your recipe describes well what you have to do and just follow the instructions. Nothing *should* go wrong then.
