16 hours ago FlagThe Allied States of Reed Audio Just as the murderer does not have the "freedom to murder" and the rapist does not have the "freedom to rape" nor should the enslaver have the freedom to make or keep people as slaves.

This holds true whether the murderer, rapist or enslaver is a private individual or the state.

However, the above is a moral position - whether one should support MILITARY action on this basis depends on the practical circumstances.

That gets me into trouble - as I refuse to accept that removing Saddam Hussain was "imoral aggression", but I did not support the idea of invading Iraq either (on the basis of a practical examination of the situation). Ditto Afghanistan - I do NOT think removing the slave state of the Taliban was wrong, but I have (and always have had) very strong practical doubts about the campaign.

I fully accept the the above position makes BOTH sides of the debate despise me - so be it.
15 hours ago FlagThe Free Land of Burn Berkely Hate, I think, is too strong a word. In the American Civil War 360,000 Union soldiers died in the fight to preserve the Union. A fight which was in no small part spurred by southerners "right" to keep slaves.
In this case and and in the cases of Iraq and Afghanistan, I seems it comes down to whether or not you have the courage of your convictions.

11 hours ago FlagThe Republic of Tokarev TT-33 i agree that slavery is an unjustifiable evil. But what about the grey areas? For example, work gangs in prison. Its not slave labor; they get room and board, its only natural they pay for it right?

Plus, who are we, as freedom loving peoples, to force our views and customs on an existing culture?

"Freedom loving peoples" do not include countries where slavery is legal. Allowing nations similar to North Korea to be part of a "freedom loving" region is absurd.

We aren't forcing our views on anyone: no one has to be a part of this region. This region is about capitalism; slavery contradicts capitalism. What the Hell IS this region about if communist/slavery countries are part of it? It's just a gaggle-f*** with no goal or purpose. There is no purpose--I repeat--no purpose to a region that has no common ideal.
