The Free Kingdom of Western Averi is a massive, socially progressive nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 3.366 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Defence, and Social Equality. The average income tax rate is 48%, but much higher for the wealthy. A large private sector is led by the Basket Weaving industry, followed by Furniture Restoration and Pizza Delivery.

Recruitment posters proclaim the army to be both fabulous and fashionable, punitive tariffs protect local industry, the government is spending millions on renovating the public transportation system, and fewer people are bathing as citizens must show ration stamps before they can turn on their faucets. Crime is totally unknown. Western Averi's national animal is the griffin, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, its national religion is Eight Divines, and its currency is the mark.

Western Averi is ranked 24th in The Heartland and 34,707th in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring -11 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
