The United Socialist States of Verguile is a massive, cultured nation, ruled by Lord Lothor Hamstrings with an even hand, and renowned for its devotion to social welfare. Its compassionate population of 4.282 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and the Environment. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Felnoric. The average income tax rate is 96%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Tourism industry.

Property values in suburbs have nosedived after the middle class were forced to live next door to ethnic minorities, Verguile's schoolchildren are manufactured into a segregated bunch of soldiers, religious zealots, and computer technicians, citizens are allowed to rise or fall based on their own merits, and record sales of 'child-whacking sticks' have been reported. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Verguile's national animal is the Eagle, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Kronz.

Verguile is ranked 110th in The North Pacific and 3,598th in the world for Most Eco-Friendly Governments, scoring 124 on the Dolphin Recycling Awareness Index.
