The Cooperative Commonwealth of Veblenia is a gargantuan, genial nation, ruled by First Secretary Lars Tronsk with a fair hand, and renowned for its sprawling nuclear power plants. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 12.209 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, liberal government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Equality, and Social Welfare. The average income tax rate is 99%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

Citizens select which government department gets their income tax pragmas each year, CEOs can't hear the term 'Fire Sale' without bursting into tears, local executives are seen on the corner with cardboard signs reading "will oppress the masses for food", and recent protests against birds flying too low have resulted in bloodshed. Crime is totally unknown. Veblenia's national animal is the caiman, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the pragma.
