The Federation of V E X is a colossal, socially progressive nation, ruled by the Chancellor with a fair hand, and remarkable for its irreverence towards religion. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 8.119 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, corrupt, liberal individuals is effectively ruled by the Department of Law & Order, with areas such as Social Equality and Social Welfare receiving almost no funds by comparison. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Tel Vos. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology industry, followed by Arms Manufacturing and Uranium Mining.

The death penalty has been reintroduced, the people of V E X are renowned for their nihilistic attitudes, the government has instituted 'traveller reservations' across the country, and much of V E X's computer network is controlled by a rampant artificial intelligence. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. V E X's national animal is the Panther, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Zeni.
