The Democratic Republic of Turis is a colossal, socially progressive nation, ruled by Iger with an even hand, and remarkable for its museums and concert halls. It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Education, and Healthcare. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Ashpoint. The average income tax rate is 99%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

Roads are often attended by round-the-clock construction crews, conductors wield diamond-encrusted batons to fit in with their freshly gilded surroundings, motorists must pay to enter inner-cities during peak hours, and a government program is underway to revitalize Turis's beaches. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Turis's national animal is the ris, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Polar Globe.

Turis is ranked 2nd in Antarctica and 2,041st in the world for Most Compassionate Citizens, scoring 60 on the Kitten Softness Rating.
